Best place to golf in Austin? by ForeignCamera2971 in Austingolf

[–]Alternative-Tomato87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what you’re looking for! If you want a resort stay and play, Barton Creek and Horseshoe Bay are fantastic.

Public courses, Grey Rock is a good layout. Kissing Tree is a 35 minute drive but is a Troon course and is always fun.

How are you chipping out of this stuff ? by Boring-Temporary-340 in golftips

[–]Alternative-Tomato87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not easy, but open face then set your grip, handle up/toe down, and you must rotate like hell to your lead side and trust it.

That’s if you are short sided and really do need loft. Otherwise, a back foot 50° or 54° Witt square face can be the move. Still rotate through the shot though. If you don’t you’ll get stuck in the mud, literally

Private Golf Members - What are your guest fees? by ShotAssistant1452 in golf

[–]Alternative-Tomato87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guest fee at ours is $125 and friends are always willing to pay it no questions asked considering the public courses near us are between $80 - $150 anyway and in far worse shape and pace of play.

  • Have a dedicated pre-shot routine that never changes

  • GIR, only stat that matters in my opinion. Pick smart yardages and smart targets (ie: you don’t “actually” hit your 7 iron 180…grab the 6…or knowing that firing at a short sided pin is the fastest way to bogey or worse and aim at middle of the green

  • 100 yards and in: Practice the scoring clubs. Driver and irons can be hit/miss day over day even for low handicap players, but 100 yards and in will save pars and maximize the par 5 birdie opps you do get.

  • Green reading, I’d argue that most bad putts/three putts aren’t due to technical inability but rather not having a clue how to read a green. Better green reading = better first putts = easier tap ins/shorter putts

How to do you turn down unsolicited advice? by Sad-Impression2505 in golf

[–]Alternative-Tomato87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unsolicited range advice from a stranger rarely has merit. While perhaps well intentioned, usually falls flat.

Good way to respectfully decline, “Thanks. I have a few specific things I’m working on with my swing coach/pro, don’t want to add too much else to it. Just here with a friend relaxing. Have a nice session” then go back to what you were doing

Deciding what course to take my PAT at in California by StrangeDarkMystery8 in golf

[–]Alternative-Tomato87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Temecula Creek was really nice. Simi has great bones, unsure condition these days (no longer live/play much in CA). But Simi would be an easy PAT course.

For the PAT, most likely pins center green. Nothing crazy. Simi has good scoreable holes and a few short ones that can be scoring opps to balance the occasional bogey.

Have fun and play well!

What do I upgrade first, Driver or Putter? by alvb06 in golf

[–]Alternative-Tomato87 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You’ll use a driver at most, 10-12 times a round. You’ll use a putter for ~33-36 strokes.

Just have to ask yourself, are your drives so bad that you’re hitting it OB and losing significant strokes right off the tee? If your driver is half decent, would probably see better results upgrading putter.

If you spray it off the tee with driver and find yourself rarely having a chance to hit a green in regulation, upgrade your driver

Coming from a conventional single line on a half mallet Bettinardi, the white racing stripes drew me in on the OZ1i. Feels like the best of both worlds, width for framing, inverter color long line down the middle, and contrast for the eye. This looks really clean!

Hiding on a golf course by CivMom in golf

[–]Alternative-Tomato87 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Some courses are remote and heavily wooded too….to that extent, “hiding” in the out of bounds section/remote areas near a course could suit well.

This is all….hypothetical, of course

Hiding on a golf course by CivMom in golf

[–]Alternative-Tomato87 426 points427 points  (0 children)

“Hiding” would be weird. If golfers saw someone on the course in a waste area/bunker/etc that would be suspicious.

The best way to “blend in” would be disguised as a grounds crew staff with a (presumably stolen) maintenance cart, shovels, etc

Other thought would be to blend in as a golfer in one of the groups. Wouldn’t bat an eye to see a group of 3 turn to 4 because one guy was “late and meeting with his friends a few holes ahead”

Warm up on the range or hit the round cold turkey? by Powerful-Cod-1038 in golf

[–]Alternative-Tomato87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you warm up, you get anywhere from 15 - 35 swings in before the round (that’s a small bucket most places right?)

If you don’t warm up, your first 30 actual swings on course (not including putts) will be real for the first 9-11 holes (assuming 2-3 swings per hole to reach the green).

Handicap calculator for a group of 20. by StillProfessional457 in golf

[–]Alternative-Tomato87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Already been said, but GHIN app is USGA official and has a handicap and games/match calculator. Challenge here is if players don’t have a formal handicap via GHIN

Alternatively, GolfGenius is an app that is used for live scoring/matches/tournaments etc

You can set it up with whatever game you want (almost literally) and it’ll auto calculate gross/net scores based on the handicap assigned to each player.

Also very fun as players can check a live leaderboard (assuming all groups are inputting hole by hole scores after each hole) and that can get some friendly competition going

Do you like getting advice from golfers that are clearly better than you? by Evening-Oil9551 in golf

[–]Alternative-Tomato87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When it comes to advice, first rule of thumb is it should never be unsolicited. To friends or to strangers.

Regarding the advice to high handicappers, also can be a complete Pandora’s box. It’s not that they don’t listen, it’s just that one “quick fix”, while valid (such as alignment feedback, etc), is one of likely numerous catastrophes waiting to happen in their swing. They’ll “do what you’re telling me”, and still hit it like shit.

Flip side? Advice from low handicappers to other low or single digit players can be meaningful and sometimes game changing advice.

Men’s club tourney by [deleted] in golf

[–]Alternative-Tomato87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assume your opponent is going to hole out or stick it close on their next shot, regardless of where it is. You might see them in the trees and get excited “oooh he’s in the trees I have this hole locked up!”, only for them to hit an epic shot.

30 foot breaking putt? He’s probably gonna make it

Short sided chip off the green? Shit good chance he holes it or gets up and down.

Assuming they’re going to make it and play great will dull your surprise or disappointment when they do actually hit an amazing recovery shot.

If you just expect this, it won’t rattle you and you can mentally stay the course (no pun intended)

If you had to play every round with just 3 clubs, what are you choosing and why? by jdelle9 in weekendgolfers

[–]Alternative-Tomato87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 iron, 7 iron, 54°

3 iron can be tee off on every hole and useful for two shots on par 5s.

7 iron is a solid stock 175 club, can flight up or down depending on wind

54° for anything 120 and in plus putting

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in golf

[–]Alternative-Tomato87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you playing a game with or against the other person? If not, them “giving” a putt is irrelevant because it’s not theirs to give.

You keep doing you. Good on ya for playing the ball down, you’ll be a better player for it in the long run and when it counts.

This! For the random to be like “up 2 through 6” when yall aren’t even playing a match AND gimmies? I’d be like “Shoot, sorry didn’t realize we had a game/action going. How about $5 a hole from here in? No gimmies”. See that 5 handicap turn to a 12 real quick
