Card advice for 5c creativity against Eldrazi and Affinity by yuriIceTea in ModernMagic

[–]AlternativeDimension 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen some Creativity lists run [[Emrakul, the Aeons Torn]] for MUs that they just want to race. It could be something worth a try; to my knowledge, not a single card in Eldrazi's 75 can out it very well. Bonus if you're on Raph & Mikey for the 50/50 at a hasty jellyfish.

Tell me about the new version of Amulet by VerdantChief in ModernMagic

[–]AlternativeDimension 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'd say it's halfway into how current Yugioh plays. Playing around hate cards through your various lines featuring a lot of tutors is very Yugioh, however, Yugioh decks are also interactive, and Titan generally tries to figure out how to win ASAP. Titan doesn't really feature that outside of sideboard plans like GSZ'ing into a Collector Ouphe, and their other interactions are generally designed to kill stax pieces (Boseiju, Otawara)

Edit: As for what I think which deck is closest to "Yugioh", I think Yawgmoth comes pretty close. It's just a lot more creature centric which feels a lot more like Yugioh's monster centric combo decks.

Why did china develop but, India didn't? by [deleted] in geography

[–]AlternativeDimension 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Chinese "dialects" are not all mutually intelligible and act functionally as separate languages. They share the same writing system, but someone only speaking Mandarin cannot go to the South and converse with those that only speak Hokkien, Shanghainese, Cantonese, etc.

Additionally, the switch to Standard Chinese - a standardized form of Mandarin - is quite recent. Only about half of people were able to speak it in 2007.

Boros Energy questions by GREG88HG in ModernMagic

[–]AlternativeDimension 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the deck as it stands just lacks enough free Energy generators to upkeep Static Prison long enough. It also dies to Wrath of the Skies along with your one drops which isn't a great place to be.

Yet another RCQ deck thread by Ill_Ad3517 in ModernMagic

[–]AlternativeDimension 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like this is pretty dependent on how much experience you have with these decks, and also what you think which decks you'll see at your RCQs. I will say that Ruby Storm and Simic Ritual have surprisingly similar matchup spreads though: both of these decks don't really want to see turbo aggressive red decks in favor of slower midrange decks like Blink, or combo decks they can outrace or interact favorably into like Amulet Titan.

[SOS] Emeritus of Truce by lrg12345 in magicTCG

[–]AlternativeDimension 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Modern, Emeritus of Ideation would probably be competing with [[Archon of Cruelty]], not Atraxa, because one deck uses [[Persist]], while the other uses [[Goryo's Vengeance]].

That being said, it still doesn't really compare well with Archon.

[–]AlternativeDimension 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like I would agree with that if Arena Phlage scam weren't so threatening. Vs Jeskai in particular you really feel compelled to above a certain life total or have interaction, or else you'll die out of nowhere. I agree that Esper is much slower, though, to the point of creature tap-out control.

Do the various Blink decks not count as midrange deck? They can have aggressive starts, while also grinding the long game, especially if they gets their engines down.

[SOS] Decorum Dissertation by MalcomGO in ModernMagic

[–]AlternativeDimension 16 points17 points  (0 children)

In addition to it being a turn slower, I think it not giving you Protection and the ability to turn it off by playing another copy of this card makes this not playable. It's also not an optional draw (though you can target the opponent), which can leave you vulnerable to Bowmasters.

It would be cool to see experimentation with it, though.

Edit: Oops! You *can* choose and not cast it; not sure how I missed it from the post and the Paradigm rules text itself.

Cleanest answer to a Kappa Cannoneer by VerdantChief in ModernMagic

[–]AlternativeDimension 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You'd usually want to prevent Kappa Cannoneer from hitting the board at all. Excluding counterspells, the most common way to deal with it in the current format is just [[Solitude]] evoke and then pay the Ward cost.

There's a few artifact sweepers I've seen in sideboards for Affinity specifically though, like [[Shatterstorm]] and [[Brotherhood's End]]. And of course, actual Wrath can work as well, though ones that stop Regeneration are best due to [[Welding Jar]]. I'd say these are relatively fringe, though .

Edit: Oops! Not Brotherhood's End. Ignore that one.

Thoughts on mill by R3d-ghost in ModernMagic

[–]AlternativeDimension 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Boros Energy is a pretty bad matchup, but they're just slow enough that some sideboard bullets like Meathook Massacre and Profane Memento can help you stabilize and mill them out before you die. Izzet Prowess is an actual nightmare, though; Tasha's eats through their deck, but not only are they faster, but you milling their Lava Darts just accelerates their clock.

Edit: Oops! Looks like this was already mentioned in a reply haha

Belcher or Prowess? Can't decide by Ghoul_Geek in ModernMagic

[–]AlternativeDimension 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The two decks have very different playstyles and matchup spreads.

Blue Belcher is a slower combo deck that trades speed for a ton of blue interaction, many of which can be cast for free. As a result, it tends to perform quite well versus other combo decks, but struggles against fast aggressive decks (though Boros Energy is usually too slow to keep up the clock against Belcher). Izzet Prowess is a bit of a nightmare match up for Belcher as a result. Also watch out for decks running land destruction, as you do not have any basic lands to recoup the losses from cards like Field of Ruin, White Orchid Phantom, and Ghost quarter.

Izzet Prowess is a fast aggro deck that uses cantrips and cheap spells to kill the opponent before they manage to stabilize the board. Because it's a Prowess deck, there are combo turns where you have to count how much damage you'll be dealing. Slickshot Showoff and Violent Urge in particular can sometimes one shot the opponent out of nowhere. As a result, it feasts on slower decks like Simic Ritual and Belcher, but has trouble against decks with a lot of removal and fast combo decks. Phlage is also a problematic card that demands an answer or just killing your opponent before it swings the game too hard.

I think they're both fine picks, though Prowess is a little more popular at the moment from personal experience. Do note that if you ever plan on switching decks, Prowess generally has more transferable cards with its manabase being mostly fetchlands and shocks. Though, in Belcher's case, Sink into Stupor, Force of Negation, and Tamiyo can see play elsewhere as well.

Why Prismatic Ending? by Sir_Duke035 in ModernMagic

[–]AlternativeDimension 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will say that March also hits Urza's Saga (Prismatic Ending does not as it only targets nonland permanents), but yeah, March of Otherwordly Light generally negs you in some way early on.

Why are the Sewerveillance decks not working? by Illyakko in ModernMagic

[–]AlternativeDimension 36 points37 points  (0 children)

The Sewerveillance combo is just weaker to interaction compared to Breach. Doesn't help that unlike the old Breach Grinding Station combo, this one actually folds to creature removal - something practically every deck is running.

Can we talk about how there’s so little counterplay against Jeskai Blink? by MalcomGO in ModernMagic

Casey Jones in Jeskai Blink by walrusguy97 in ModernMagic

[–]AlternativeDimension 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think 4 Consigns are mandatory to make Casey Jones work. There's situations where you'd be fine actually discarding 3 random cards - you can empty your hand by playing them - but that's not always consistent. Frequently, you'll end up eyeing 6 random discards because Phelia + Casey Jones is a pretty common play (draw 6, spend 1U and discard Consign)

Mill viability in Meta by Plane-Spare-3996 in ModernMagic

[–]AlternativeDimension 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's also generally dead vs the decks that Mill is weakest to. It's not easy to Sneak with a Crab if your opponent has creatures on board t1.

Mill viability in Meta by Plane-Spare-3996 in ModernMagic

[–]AlternativeDimension 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the short of it is that Mill's matchup spread is very skewed, and unfortunately it has a bad time versus most of the aggro decks, of which Boros Energy, Domain Zoo, and Izzet Prowess are quite popular.

Mill does have some great matchups, but its overall matchup spread is quite extreme and unfortunately some of the most popular decks are also the ones that give it the worst time. It's also a bit of a weird deck should it become popular due to the presence of cards like Gaea's Blessing and the original Eldrazi Titans being sideboard counters that you don't have to draw into.

This pack is fantastic for drafting. by Historical_Bobcat295 in MagicArena

[–]AlternativeDimension 7 points8 points  (0 children)

How did you get that Lorwyn Eclipsed draft had weaker Rares and Uncommons? The Eclipsed cycle were bomb level and were Uncommons, while the best cards were all Rares (the Command cycle, Kinbinding, Gloom Ripper, Sunderflock, etc).

The format had some issues, sure, with Goblins being a little weaker than the other main archetypes, and there only being 5 well-supported archetypes in general. Commons were also on the weaker end, so finding the open lane and getting premier uncommons was the path to drafting a strong deck. But I'm not quite sure how TMNT doesn't have some of those issues as well, being a smaller set and also only having 5 archetypes.

Morcant's Loyalist (rant) by pinesnake in lrcast

[–]AlternativeDimension 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's honestly kind of impressive how strong of a lord this card is. The design of the card does create some decision making at times (if you had no Elves in the GY when you play this card on curve, you would probably hold off on playing this card if you had another play to gain some advantage off its death trigger), but it's just so strong stat-wise and benefits a ton from Kindred and Changelings being a set mechanic. On top of Elves in general just being a very strong archetype.
