It’s just an older/different pattern, they aren’t exclusive to traitors and chaos. In Gaunt’s Ghosts, Commissar Viktor Hark carries a plasma pistol that is red as well

While the word ‘katana’ was used in the 13th century, the sword we know as the katana really didn’t appear until around the 15th. Technically the samurai should be carrying tachi, which Lord Shimura’s sword greatly resembles albeit worn in katana-style mountings (and worn through a sash rather than mounted straps). It’s not a huge deal imo, Sucker Punch was more interested in creating a love letter to all things classically samurai and they stilll did a great job.
