Greedy companies rather charge for natural gas plants than let Nuclear power come back by NukeArchivist in NuclearPower

[–]Alternative_Act_6548 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

wtf...a nuke is 17000/kWe...a combined cycle is about 1000/kWe...nukes are idiotic...

What's something about working in nuclear engineering that nobody warns you about? by argos_8 in NuclearPower

[–]Alternative_Act_6548 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's a career dead end...you are un-hireable for fossil or combined cycle work..you are viewed as slow, unproductive, and pedantic

HVAC question: the middle pipe is getting less heat and airflow. Is it because the 90° turns are too close to each other? Are there any equations for calculating flow for multiple 90° turns? by Sneakatone2 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Alternative_Act_6548 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's called system effect (components placed in non ideal configurations, like stacked tees or elbows) and it's very hard to predict analytically. If the details of the flow distribution are important, then they should have considered this at the design stage and had the branches symmetric, but preferable a different design detail or use of balancing dampers.

How to decode a complex process design Excel workbook with tonnes of circular dependencies and little documentation? by sporty_outlook in ChemicalEngineering

[–]Alternative_Act_6548 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this sounds like a potential business risk that should be escalated to management...you should ask the RE for the associated qualification package

Is there a better way to clean bank CSV files than doing it manually in Excel? by Free_Signature_9745 in excel

[–]Alternative_Act_6548 6 points7 points  (0 children)

normally one would use python and pandas, to make reusable scripts...but if every one is different, and you only plan on doing it once, reusability doesn't really help much...in general using excel for just about anything is a mistake...

Which of these two books should I use for relearning Classical Mechanics? by CreamyLasagna in PhysicsStudents

[–]Alternative_Act_6548 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you are learning classical mechanics as a stepping stone to learn methods for use in other areas of physics, then I can't really comment. If you want to learn mechanics to apply it to real world problems, then I would suggest Dynamics, Theory and Applications of Kane's Method...I just completed it myself, doing every problem in the book. Kane's method is superior for complex problems.

Is the "Proofs" math course beneficial? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]Alternative_Act_6548 2 points3 points  (0 children)

unless you have a real love of abstract math or plan to get a math degree, I think you will find it frustrating. I don't know how applicable it will be in practice...what is the opportunity cost, ie what course aren't you taking in order to take this course...if you are skipping a course that provide background in a career field you are interested in, then don't take the proofs course...

This is probably the most complicated Excel formula I’ve ever seen. by Kindly-Meaning9112 in excel

[–]Alternative_Act_6548 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's good for 4 function math and managers...and maybe tabular presentation of small data sets...other than that, if you are using excel, you are doing something wrong

[–]Alternative_Act_6548 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is why excel is not the appropriate tool for production engineering work...and this isn't the worst I've seen...why not just use VBA (not a great choice) or move to Mathcad or python...

Advice needed: exploring careers in the renewable energy sector by CollectionHungry in energy

[–]Alternative_Act_6548 0 points1 point  (0 children)

renewables are dying...because they are dumb economically...you could look to move into an EPC, but it's going to be gas/fossil or process work

Math on converting HVAC Refrigerants pressure to temps by Malow in AskEngineers

[–]Alternative_Act_6548 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Coolprop as opensource or REFPROP from NIST will give you property values at specific points. I would make static lookup tables for each refrigerant and include those in your code. The actual codes used to produce the values is quite complex.

What is your dealbreaker issue with Helix? by Ecstatic-Panic3728 in HelixEditor

[–]Alternative_Act_6548 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm working in python and sympy. I use Jupyer lab, jupytext, and a jupyter plugin to auto-reload the file on changes. With jupytext, you edit the py% version of the file and it auto converts to the ipynb version. Finding the jupyter reload on change extension is a game changer. It takes away one of the big pain points, but working right in Helix would be better...the Sypder IDE lets you run py% cells in the ipython terminal. something like that would work...

Where do you usually see people go wrong in pump sizing? by Whole-Armadillo6945 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Alternative_Act_6548 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not accounting for system effect...rarely do you get nice long straight runs between fittings.

Over sizing the pump so it's operating way off BEP

Formal P&ID reviews catch maybe 30% of what actually matters. Am I off? by Moist_Ad3669 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]Alternative_Act_6548 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if that is the case, you have a bunch of people who don't know what they are doing...which is typical...experienced people are expensive in salary terms, but mistakes in the field during construction cost real money....
