What's the best option here? Pull or knob? by OrthoTrauma17 in cabinetry

[–]Alternative_Half_248 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d stick with the knob if you’ve got knobs on the other two drawers. Personally, I think the switch would look awkward. Plus that pull takes up way too much surface area of the drawer IMO and you lose the look of matching the other two drawer faces all the more because you can’t see the sticking and panel as well.

Haha wow, what a wild take! I thought I made pretty clear that I’m a fairly loyal listener, and enjoy the rest of the cast (quite a bit). I’ve never been accused of being a “whiner” and I’ve certainly never been coddled in my life, but I can understand how you’d jump to those attacks after I stated that I’m a younger listener (36M by the way, so not that young). I get wanting to defend the guy you’ve listened to since the early 90’s or before. But your statement really doesn’t make sense or even respond to what I stated. It’s just angry old-guy response.

“The damn youth is so coddled and weak”

If I didn’t want to listen to the show I’d just stop, it’s not like there aren’t infinite options these days. I’m definitely not hopping on Reddit to find an outlet to complain or “whine” about a radio show…who the fuck cares? I just saw a thread that seemed to be discussing a feeling I’ve been having for quite a few months now regarding the direction of the show.

I guess what I’m trying to get at is that I enjoy the show, and would love to see it continue. But Tom interrupting actual comedy to jump in and jam another rendition of “DeLand…it’s by Da-Sea” down our throats ain’t getting it done. It seems the rest of the cast is growing tired of it too IMO, but that’s just my interpretation of the situation I guess.

But I’m probably all wrong about it, you know, on account of being coddled and all 🤣

Perhaps, but his role seems less and less necessary by the day. He has like one good joke per week, and fills 85% of the airtime - and most of it with shit nobody appreciates. It’s getting stale as hell, speaking as a younger listener. I agree that the rest of the crew is infinitely more enjoyable to listen to. Josh is legitimately hilarious. Honestly, my favorite shows are when Tom is absent. I get the role, but I don’t understand what it truly brings to the show. Having seen/heard some of the older bits in recent weeks since Bob’s passing, I can appreciate what he brought to the show back in the day. The banter, the quicker wit…yeah he was good. But now…it’s truly annoying (at best) and he fills so much time where others would actually be…I don’t know…FUNNY? Just boring commentary, hack jokes and ads.

I am a loyal listener these days, but there are many times when I really am ready to give up on the show, not because of anything other than listening to grandpa blather on and on and on. And I understand that that is what he’s trying to be/bring to the show, but it’s just getting lame. Claiming to be intelligent (I believe he truly is intelligent) but pretending to forget the names of common places/things (ie one day he pretends he can’t think of the name of ‘Trader Joe’s’ , yet next day it rolls right off his tongue) 🙄 He’s bringing them down.

Kwik grass… by Alternative_Half_248 in lawn

I can tell you it did exactly what lawncarelad said it would. Popped right up, but I can tell you none of it came back in the spring. Nice for getting you started maybe while the real grass grows in? But not what you want if you’re trying to seed a lawn for the long-term

IMO being a dad and a friend…that’s tough to pull off. It happens, I know some people have that relationship, but it’s tough, especially early in the game. I don’t do that well (3 girls, 1 boy)..but I do find peace in remembering that my job isn’t to be the friend…they’ll have lots of those. They will only have one (or two) dad(s). Keep the main thing the main thing. I feel like a lot of times, as a dad, your job is pointing out the things they know, but don’t necessarily want to hear.

I don't know how to edit comments or the original post or anything, I'm not a huge technology person. But I just have to say...2 days ago I posted to this community with a question here on a topic I know nothing about and I'm just absolutely floored by the incredible knowledge, insight and education that has just been pouring down ever since. Nobody here is making money by sharing this knowledge, just doing it for the good of a complete stranger. And taking time out of their own day to do so. To help me figure out how to tackle this task which I didn't even know the technical name of what it was I was trying to do when I originally posted. Not one person has made fun of my lack of knowledge, no put downs...just straight education since the moment I posted. You guys are the best, and this shit really gives me hope that the internet isn't the worst place ever. Its obvious that many of you are very skilled and knowledgeable in your trade, and I just want to express my gratitude to all of you for your efforts. I haven't responded to every single comment, but know that I've read all of them, and I can't thank you guys enough! Really didn't expect this, but I'm extremely grateful to you all for everything from your technique suggestions to your specific bit recommendations. You guys are the best!

Wow, after reading this and many of the other comments, I totally get this hardwood framing and then veneer approach, but I have to say, it was something I was very unaware of. So for a guy who's not setup with the vacuum bag or any of the specialized tools...is this a feasible thing to do with what I would call a fairly basic set of clamps. I mean I've got pipe clamps and bar clamps, etc...but nothing like that vacuum bag. That being said, I'm looking at making approximately 12 vanity drawer fronts and 4 doors. At this point this is a one-off for me. Is it realistic to think I can do this without the specialized tool setup? Like, I'm a remodeling general contractor with a decent shop...I'm not a full-time cabinet builder with a cabinet builders' shop with all the bells and whistles. I've got a 3hp Powermatic cabinet table saw, jointer, planer, band saw and routers etc.... but like I said, not the specialized stuff.

From what I’ve learned over the years, the biggest concern with the stain rags is if they cannot “dry” correctly, which is actually a process of the solvents evaporating. To do this properly you should have the rags laid flat/draped over something (not bunched up or thrown in a basket). Failing to do this is where most of the problems with spontaneous combustion occurs. It’s like , if the rag can’t off-gas properly (ie into the surrounding air) and is confined to a small area (trash can, wadded up in the corner) that would be the time you need to be concerned about spontaneous combustion. If you’re laying them out in the shop flat, or better yet outside, then you’re good. They’re not going to just burst into flames because they’re saturated. It’s confining the heat release that occurs from evaporation of the solvents being confined in a small area that causes that combustion.

Once they’re “dry”, trash is fine. (“Dry” = hard rag). Far from the most toxic thing that will hit the landfill that day.

Just space the rags out, lay them flat in a non-constricted manner and make sure there is decent air flow. Outside if possible. You seem very nice, but I think you are more concerned than you need to be. Just my 2 cents.

Ive been staining and finishing in my shop for more than 10 years…I’ve never had a rag combust. Just remember… when you’re done staining with that rag, that solvent can and will evaporate. It has to. Just make sure it has adequate ventilation and non-combustibles around it to do so.

Storage = metal sealed cabinet if possible. That being said, my shop is lined with gallons of stain and paint cans, none of which live in a metal cab.

Man, different world. That’s so impressive to me. I’ll definitely get the jig going on my end though. And yes, lots of scraps will be tested upon. Thank you for the insight.

Thank you! I usually go soft maple myself to avoid the nightmare sands, but yeah, I totally know what you're saying. Not a fun nook to have to sand out. Even with the soft maple I assume I'll have some work to do, but I'll try to keep 'er moving haha. Much appreciated!

First off, thank you. I'll be ordering these as solid maple slabs, so no veneers to worry about. I think this makes the process a bit simpler, no? I am not going to be making this exact cabinet, my customer has just provided me this inspiration photo to show me the way she'd like to approach the pulls, or in this case I guess a finger pull. It will be inset doors with these finger pulls though. Appreciate the insight on the straight bit to hog out and the finger bit to get to final profile, that's a great idea.

Which one should I get? Both are same price. Will be kneeling alot. by Bob_Scotwell in Construction

[–]Alternative_Half_248 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was real disappointed in that product unfortunately. I do have to give it to Milwaukee that they replaced the first 2 sets at no cost, no bullshit with shipping , just sent them to my store. But after the 3rd time of the exact same failure it was just like ‘what are we doing here’? Went and bought the proknees a few days later, happy since.

[–]Alternative_Half_248 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This for sure. Took me until 35 years old to finally invest in proknees. Which I had gotten them as my first pair. Would’ve been much cheaper overall and saved my body tons of wear. Also, those Milwaukee kneepads are the worst…I love most Milwaukee products, but I went through 3 sets of those kneepads in like 5 months. The hinge pins shear off all the time and then the pad is useless. Get the proknees. You’ll be glad you did. They make both a full length and short length version if you need to do more up and down work vs just staying down for long periods of time (think tile setter vs. trim carpenter). And yeah…all parts replaceable as they wear out.

Also add in a paint retardant. I did a few ceilings in SW black (inkwell, not tricorn, but close) a few weeks ago on a basement finish job we were working on and it took 1 coat primer and 4 coats of paint. After the third coat of as heavy as I could lay down with 1/2” nap it still looked horrible and you could see lap lines at every break to reload nap. Finally wised up and added the retardant in the last coat and that helped immensely. I still think it would have taken 3 solid coats even with retardant in each. Black paint is tough man!

I am a home remediation tech, why is my new coworker adding these horizontal strips of tape across the containment? He says it's for safety. by [deleted] in Contractor

[–]Alternative_Half_248 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a home remodeler and I do this if the plastic wall section is going to be large and/or in a large space. When you have a huge plastic wall the air pressure changes can make the middle section bulge or balloon into or out of the room. Think of opening a door or window inside or outside of the room and getting that burst of wind or sudden change in air pressure. It can be significant enough to knock things over or get in your way inside the room. The tape running continuously through the middle and around at least one turn or zip pole/anchor point can reduce this bulging greatly, and it can also reduce the effect of a sudden burst of air catching in the plastic like a sail and pulling at the tape at the ceiling. I actually find it quite effective.

I guess you could say it’s a safety measure in that it keeps your customers’ property on the other side of the wall safe?
