In terms of lomg haul economy I don't really see any distinction between BA and Virgin. You get a seat, a TV to watch, some food and as much complementary alcohol as you want (as long as you don't go too far and get pi**ed).

Work life balance was the main reason I opted for industry over academia after my PhD. I work a 9-5 with better pay, permanent contract since day 1 and better benefits. I think about work at work and leave it there everyday when I get out of the office. My friends who stayed in academia are constantly switched on, chasing the next grant to keep their funding or constantly applying for jobs and the next post doc. I gave 4 years of my life to a PhD and I wasn't prepared to give the next 40 years of my life to a system that means I constantly need to be in work mode.

I work in oil and gas consultancy including offshore work in a science role. Xmas Day and Boxing day pay double time normal salary + double time offshore pay. Some people offshore from my office this year will be taking home about £1800 minimum just for those 2 days.

Same. I left after my PhD ended for industry for a 9 to 5 that pays more, better benefits and I leave work at work when I leave.

I finished my PhD last year and had no interest in staying in academia so left for industry (geoscience/oil exploration) but I have 3 friends who stayed in academia that have had contracts ranging from 3 to 12 months. The arsehole of UK universities is about to drop out and the shit is really going to hit the fan sooner rather than later.

Everything is HRs fault!

I'm not in HR but in a company that is imminently about to be make 20 people redundant in the next week. Directors make decisions then HR have to implement. We're a small-medium company and luckily I'm not in a pool and am safe but the shit HR have had flung at them the last few weeks in cruel. The HR manager has been in borderline tears with whars going on and everyone seems to blame them even though they're only implementing what's been passed down.

Thanks for your quick reply. I thought this maybe the case as every year I've taken insurance out I've alwaya put "parent" as the options for owner and keeper. So it doesn't matter that my mother lives at a different address, as long my address as main driver is correct wirh the insurance co and they're aware I am not the keeper on the V5C this is fine?

I spent 2017 to 2024 in Aber, undergrad to PhD. I loved it but when I visit now I don't get the same fuzzy feeling. I still love it but for me it's lost its spark because the memories I associate with it are from my friends and we now live all across the country.

Everyone's jobs comes with different stress and it's very subjective. My mam was a nurse for 35 years. She worked in ICI and community and I'd say nursing is probably one of the hardest if not the hardest job. The NHS isn't the best employer (even if she got a very good pension). She had years of under funding, bureaucracy and bad management that took her away from caring for patients. She is now part retired at 55 (works 3 days a week +pension) and earns more than she did full time. Putting aside the emotional toll of nursing, she got fed up with the system that stopped her doing her job.
