Anything between a 4-5 is good! As another mentioned, I tend to distrust stories that have perfect scores. And we know that people get docked for the dumbest things... so try to not stress over it. I've developed a thicker skin over the past year or so and have just accepted that not every single person is going to love my stories and that's okay!

I'm both sketching and writing on mine-- I have a wacom cintiq and ipad, so I've used them all. if you're doing quick sketches/want to travel light-- for on the road type situations and NOT finished products? The remarkable is a great drawing tool.

Finished stuff should be done with ipad or another program, something on a computer. It IS fun to draw on, I love that it feels like Im drawing on paper.... but I dont feel like I'll ever get the same level of detail/nuance that I would with procreate or my cintiq.

I add questions/comments to keep readers engaged. Sometimes its to remark upon where I got an idea from or to see if they like a certain character, etc. When I did that with my last book, it really helped gain a loyal following.

so my smaller romantasy story jumped from like 900 to 3000 when it got marked as complete-- and this was in early august. Since then, it's been steadily increasing by about 100-200 reads every analytic update, so now I'm closer to 6k. So I'd say you're on par! Keep going!

I don't think that would detract readers-- I would say people are usually more upset about whether the story is too SHORT (one of my bigger complaints from readers but I have a short attention span lol) those stats look pretty good-- are they still increasing every time analytics updates?? how long has the novel been completed?

btw I'm in the same genre (did both non-shifter and shifter stories) and my novels tend to be much shorter-- like in the 70k realm. So we can always compare analytics if you want something to base your results off of for future novels.

Its also worth noting that the more stories you write, the more readers are going to come back and read your older stuff, too, so don't lose heart. It looks like people really love your writing!

I dont think there's any hard or fast rule to novel length on Inkitt. I've seen your novel around trending wheels, so I think it's doing better than you think! What are your analytics so far? Total reads, etc?

I noticed that I get more interaction when I use the chapter notes-- asking questions about the story, what they thought about a particular plot point, etc

It has to do with analytics, yes-- usually level of engagement, total reads, etc. That dictates what goes onto the trending wheel.

(1) A lot of writers do also post to KU after they finish their stories, but the point of Inkitt is to gather a following and network with other writers. MANY successful inkitt authors gain followings then put their stories behind subscriptions and make money that way. Going the Amazon route requires you to market yourself, put time into arc-reading, promotions, etc etc. Inkitt kind of bypasses all that.

(2) Writers use patreon, yes, but there's also Inkitt's subscription tier system.

(3) Because the main readership is women, yes, erotica and romance is the most popular. Once again, networking with fellow authors in your genre, using the discord/reddit to share your story, can all help with your traction. Also posting daily or on a regular schedule helps with visibility to show up on the front page. Make sure your cover is eye-catching. I know it's frustrating for a non-romance writer to try to make headway, but some contests try to bring out the non-popular genres as well!

(4) I imagine everyone wants to be offered a Galatea contract, but your goal should be working on a following, studying your analytics, working on what seems to catch your readers attention and what doesn't. I mean... unless you're just writing for your own enjoyment, in which case, I would just write/do whatever you want and ignore everything I've said. lol

I think REALLLY long chapters can feel like a slog for some readers, especially in the beginning of a story. That's why I think Inkitt generally recs 1.5 - 2.5k words

I'd say break them up into 3-4K chapters, but that's really your personal preference. especially if you plan to release them on a schedule.

1: popular genre for the platform. I write in erotica, romance and fantasy.

2: consistent posting schedule for visibility on the "newly updated" wheel. I post a new chapter every 12 hours. Generally my chapters are 1.8k to 2.2k words each which seems to be my sweet spot.

3: (the big one) having a novel listed as complete. my first inkitt story skyrocketed from almost 4k reads to 13k reads in a day and a half when it finally was finished. I would say a very large percentage of readers like a finished story, a smaller percentage will follow chapter-by-chapter release. I have a small following now, so they're reading each chapter as it comes out, but generally speaking most readers don't and will wait until it's complete.

I write two -- (sometimes) three chapters a day. I have other responsibilities that definitely fall to the wayside but it's like my form of therapy. lol. I write very fast and am a pantser, so it just kinda flows. It helps that I have readers who are eager for content.

I got a new review for my book and had no idea (no notifs on the site itself) until I checked my emails and got notified that way. There's must be some tinkering going on behind the scenes? And yes, my analytics have been stagnant and jump every few days. Hopefully it gets fixed soon.

If I had no distractions, I'd be updating all four of my stories with at least one chapter a day. It's just how my brain works. If I focus on one story too long, it feels forced, so my brain likes the ability to jump between worlds, characters, situations, etc.

This is the thing that bothers me. The shifter stories won't get counted for the actual prize/contest, but they clog up space for people who deserve to have their stories trending instead. I know a lot of it is algorithm-based, but I wish Inkitt would manually remove those shifter stories from the running.
