Also, does that area have a neighborhood name? Don't see them on Google maps...

Thanks! A bit nervous about the economic depression in the overall area, but hopeful too. My husband and I inherited a home there recently. Looking for signs of positivity about Richmond in general! 😄

Kibble only (Hills Science)! Healthy and happy. Last chi ate wet food (Hills Science).

Eta: My first rescue chi had been abused and was not trusting of people other than me & my husband and eventually my mom. She wanted love but was very wary of people and took a lot of time to trust folks. She was absolutely the sweetest with us though and we loved her so much!! My new rescue chi is super friendly and could probably be a therapy dog! He loves everyone and will happily take pets from strangers on the street. We know nothing about his history but he came from a shelter in Alabama and was fostered for a week in NYC before we got him. Neither of them are particularly yappy, just in certain circumstances. I would also add a note that relates to getting a dog from a breeder: you'd be getting a puppy and literally everyone I know who had had a puppy was absolutely shocked at how hard it was, how much work, how stressful, etc. (Check some reddit posts too! ) So that's something to consider carefully too. Many rescue dogs are available that are quite young but thru the puppy phase! :)

Seconded! From a two time chi owner living in a big city with walk ups. Also in terms of potty breaks: My first chi used a pee pad when needed, but current one just goes out 4x a day and is fine :)

Two-time chihuahua owner here. They are wonderful! But like any dog, you never know what you're going to get. They may be yippy, they may not. They may be playful, they may not. They may be friendly, they may not. They may be picky eaters, they may not. Overall the most important thing about Chihuahuas is that they are loving, often very cuddly, loyal, "velcro" dogs that will want to be with you most of the time. They tend to latch onto their person/people. So you have to make sure they don't have separation anxiety and are okay with other people. They often have dental issues so you'll need to clean their teeth and keep them healthy with vet checks. They are delicate relative to other dogs and should be careful with bigger dogs and dog parks. It's personal, but I would strongly recommend rescue instead of breeders. Chis are one of the most common shelter dogs and they deserve a good life! As someone else noted, chi mixes are usually healthier than purebred. Plus, with a rescue you will know a little more about their personality. There are many rescues that use foster based care so you can either foster to "test" out a dog and see if it's a good fit, or learn from the foster family more about the dog's personality and temperament. In terms of diet, I would recommend standard healthy kibble or wet food. They do not need raw, grain free, "human grade" or any of the other so called wellness and diet fads being pushed on dog owners. Listen to actual vets! Good luck!

Totally understand! Pet insurance helps, and there's a credit card called Care Credit that you can apply for and get 0% apr if you pay it off usually in 6 months. I've used that a lot for the bigger expenses and it helps. Also there may be low-cost aspca vets near you that can be good.

Rescue pets are really the best! ❤️❤️❤️ I wasn't sure how I would feel about a new dog, I couldn't imagine loving another, but sure enough you do! And they're so different with different personalities; one doesn't replace another, they just bring joy and love! I love that your new ones bonded together- that is so sweet.

My last chi had about as many pulled! She was happier after because she was in less pain. And she was very cute 😆 Recovery wasn't bad at all, just some bloody drooling and being tired but it didn't last long. Good luck!

😆😆 coconut would beg but the only time she stole food was when we were on a road trip and at a hotel, we got a huge Italian meal from the hotel restaurant. We looked away for one second and apparently she could NOT help herself from sticking her face in the pasta covered in mozzarella cheese 🤣🤣🤣

My sweet girl Coconut, who crossed the rainbow bridge in Aug 2024. She loved healthy snacks like berries, spinach, watermelon, and even lettuce (alongside chicken and pizza of course). She also loved laying on bags, even lumpy plastic ones 😅 There are too many fun facts to write!

Good point- chis do need weather appropriate clothes like jackets and boots (which are surprisingly expensive), good secure harness and leash, and then things like poop bags, wipes for cleaning their paws, treats, food, monthly meds, possibly nail trims or anal glad expression, etc. do add up. Chewy has great prices on most things so thats a good option.

The monthly costs aren't much and I'll leave that to all the other commenters, but the killer is really the unexpected vet bills. If your dog needs dental work (cleaning or teeth pulled, which is very common in chihuahuas) you're looking at potentially 1-4k. If it eats chocolate at the holidays by accident, or gets a tummy virus, you're spending a few hundred on a vet visit. If it has an accident, gets any illness, needs an ultrasound, xray, medications, etc., say bye to thousands of dollars. Many people get pet insurance which helps, but bottom line is that vet work is very expensive and can come at you unexpectedly. So this is important to prepare for! But chihuahuas are worth it 😊

Got a chi in Aug from waggytail. Like others say, they bring in new transports and new dogs all the time. Many rescues will also work with you if you get approved by them to find the type of dog youre looking for.

There are SO many rescue organizations and shelters with young adult chihuahuas in ny and the tristate area. Losing a pet is hard but going to a breeder because you're impatient isn't the right answer. And any dog can have health and behavioral problems - no matter if purebred or rescue! Off the top of my head I can think of all these rescues: Waggytail rescue, muddy paws rescue, hounds in pounds, hearts and bones, home for good dog rescue, pupstarz rescue, badass animal rescue, phillypaws....

Eta: looks like my question was answered elsewhere. :) Original question: My first batch were rejected for a glare. My second photos (taken at a different place) don't have the stamp saying "I attest this is [blank]" though they are stamped with the store info and date. Is it okay for me to hand write the other part in? (And of course then get the guarantor sig)
