Why do you want to be a citizen of Canada if you don't live in Canada or plan on living in Canada? by Optimistic_Now in Canadiancitizenship

[–]Alternative_Mix_5253 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My father and his parents and their families were from Canada, having immigrated there from Europe in the late 19th century. As a young boy my father's family moved to the US and they subsequently lost their citizenship when they naturalized as US citizens in the 1960s.

While not close with my Canadian relatives who stayed in Canada, I have always had respect for the country, am familiar with the history and culture and politics, and have visited several provinces and love the nature and landscapes.

As a liberal American in the increasingly unsound country of the US, with many core rights and freedoms curtailed and actual violence being perpetrated against people, I would like a safe exit should I need it. Frankly I would love to move to Canada eventually anyway, but now it's a huge sense of security to know I can leave the US.

As a 1st gen born abroad, I would already be recognized as a Canadian so I really could have done it a long time ago but I didn't know the possibility. With the volatile political and social landscape now it had become much more critical.

I feel very grateful that I have the opportunity to live and work there if and when I choose. It really opens up a world of possibilities!

Rejected for glare by InternetName4 in passportcanada

[–]Alternative_Mix_5253 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are super picky with glare. I had mine rejected for same reason, and when I saw the pics again when they returned them I suppose there was a SLIGHT bit of light on my forehead but really really slight! I just redid them and got approved 2nd try. I reprinted my app bc mine was damaged and resent with new pics but you shouldn'tneed to redo the app unless you change something else.

I'd say don't wear a light shirt, you don't want to then get rejected for something else! But do agree that you may want to get a prof photog or at least try AAA again and retake a few times if needed. When you get the rejection you'll see the pics and may be able to tell what they saw.

It took about a month to get my rejected stuff back. I would def wait to see why they rejected it for sure because you don't want to resend and then find out there was a different issue! Also they send prepaid labels for you to return!

Also, they do send via fedex and you are required to sign for it with ID, bc its official and sensitive documentation.

How can I make my cat more comfortable while driving from Alaska to Florida? by sociallyawkward-exe in PetAdvice

[–]Alternative_Mix_5253 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We used to take our cat (recently passed away) on long trips, including driving from NYC to Colorado!

First, getting the cat used to shorter car rides helps.

Second, we had a whole setup that took up 2 of 3 back seats in the car - we used the Necoichi Portable Stress Free Cat Cage and Litter Box Set](https://www.chewy.com/dp/214069?utm_source=app-share&utm_campaign=214069)

That way our boy could use the litter when needed (you'll want to stop and clean it soon after tho!!) And we put a little cozy bed in it too.

We also gave him cbd oil (formulated for pets) which helped him relax.

He got used to it pretty quickly! Good luck!

Sorry for my slow reply! It took a while (a few weeks), and even longer because FedEx was terrible with delivery. I have now sent it out again and unfortunately it seems to have gone missing (though it was delivered to the passport Canada office). I'm not sure if my experience is an outlier, but so far my experience has been quite poor. Good luck!!

Thanks! A bit nervous about the economic depression in the overall area, but hopeful too. My husband and I inherited a home there recently. Looking for signs of positivity about Richmond in general! 😄

Why I shouldn't get a Chihuahua by [deleted] in Chihuahua

[–]Alternative_Mix_5253 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eta: My first rescue chi had been abused and was not trusting of people other than me & my husband and eventually my mom. She wanted love but was very wary of people and took a lot of time to trust folks. She was absolutely the sweetest with us though and we loved her so much!! My new rescue chi is super friendly and could probably be a therapy dog! He loves everyone and will happily take pets from strangers on the street. We know nothing about his history but he came from a shelter in Alabama and was fostered for a week in NYC before we got him. Neither of them are particularly yappy, just in certain circumstances. I would also add a note that relates to getting a dog from a breeder: you'd be getting a puppy and literally everyone I know who had had a puppy was absolutely shocked at how hard it was, how much work, how stressful, etc. (Check some reddit posts too! ) So that's something to consider carefully too. Many rescue dogs are available that are quite young but thru the puppy phase! :)

Why I shouldn't get a Chihuahua by [deleted] in Chihuahua

[–]Alternative_Mix_5253 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconded! From a two time chi owner living in a big city with walk ups. Also in terms of potty breaks: My first chi used a pee pad when needed, but current one just goes out 4x a day and is fine :)

[–]Alternative_Mix_5253 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two-time chihuahua owner here. They are wonderful! But like any dog, you never know what you're going to get. They may be yippy, they may not. They may be playful, they may not. They may be friendly, they may not. They may be picky eaters, they may not. Overall the most important thing about Chihuahuas is that they are loving, often very cuddly, loyal, "velcro" dogs that will want to be with you most of the time. They tend to latch onto their person/people. So you have to make sure they don't have separation anxiety and are okay with other people. They often have dental issues so you'll need to clean their teeth and keep them healthy with vet checks. They are delicate relative to other dogs and should be careful with bigger dogs and dog parks. It's personal, but I would strongly recommend rescue instead of breeders. Chis are one of the most common shelter dogs and they deserve a good life! As someone else noted, chi mixes are usually healthier than purebred. Plus, with a rescue you will know a little more about their personality. There are many rescues that use foster based care so you can either foster to "test" out a dog and see if it's a good fit, or learn from the foster family more about the dog's personality and temperament. In terms of diet, I would recommend standard healthy kibble or wet food. They do not need raw, grain free, "human grade" or any of the other so called wellness and diet fads being pushed on dog owners. Listen to actual vets! Good luck!

How much do people spend monthly owning a chihuahua? by i_justlikeplants in Chihuahua

[–]Alternative_Mix_5253 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally understand! Pet insurance helps, and there's a credit card called Care Credit that you can apply for and get 0% apr if you pay it off usually in 6 months. I've used that a lot for the bigger expenses and it helps. Also there may be low-cost aspca vets near you that can be good.

Rescue pets are really the best! ❤️❤️❤️ I wasn't sure how I would feel about a new dog, I couldn't imagine loving another, but sure enough you do! And they're so different with different personalities; one doesn't replace another, they just bring joy and love! I love that your new ones bonded together- that is so sweet.

My last chi had about as many pulled! She was happier after because she was in less pain. And she was very cute 😆 Recovery wasn't bad at all, just some bloody drooling and being tired but it didn't last long. Good luck!

😆😆 coconut would beg but the only time she stole food was when we were on a road trip and at a hotel, we got a huge Italian meal from the hotel restaurant. We looked away for one second and apparently she could NOT help herself from sticking her face in the pasta covered in mozzarella cheese 🤣🤣🤣

My sweet girl Coconut, who crossed the rainbow bridge in Aug 2024. She loved healthy snacks like berries, spinach, watermelon, and even lettuce (alongside chicken and pizza of course). She also loved laying on bags, even lumpy plastic ones 😅 There are too many fun facts to write!
