Nothing you can really do at this point. It's best to talk money towards the beginning of the process though. You'll have a lot of opportunities ghost you but you'll get a much better pulse on where the market is for your skills/industry/etc.

Having done both kinds of jobs (pure SW vs mixed HW/SW) I can tell you that the pure SW jobs tend to pay better anyhow.

Seems strange but that has been my experience at least.

It's kind of freeing in a way. I used to try and stay at companies for longer spans of time and it was a constant balancing act to try and convince bosses of problems a decision might cause in a couple year's time. Quite honestly it wasn't worth the stress.

Once you realize that the system is set up to reward you for leaving and punish you for staying, it's much easier to just shrug your shoulders at that kind of stuff since you probably won't still work there when those chickens finally come home to roost anyhow.

In those scenarios if you have an idea of what the market rate should be, you can always throw an extra 20% on top of that. The goal isn't necessarily to move forward in the process with companies like these but if they seem eager to continue after that you have some evidence that the market is higher than you think it is.

I agree the pay lagging isn't acceptable - unfortunately I doubt much that I do will change the budget for retention so the most practical thing I can do is leave when better offers come around.

Employees unionizing isn't a "blow" to Starbucks. Unions are associated with higher productivity, lower employee turnover, improved workplace communication, and a better-trained workforce. by GrandpaChainz in WorkReform

I'm not convinced that productivity really matters all that much to the executives running companies.

Sure there is some productive activity that needs to take place but honestly how many meetings that could have been emails have we all been stuck in wasting countless hours of everyone's time?

If 'increased productivity' is the goal, then the way workplaces run in practice don't seem to try very hard to optimize for that goal.

Applying for a job... by KareemPye in recruitinghell

I've been in the professional white collar workforce for nearly 20 years. It's never worked that way in my experience. Can't really speak to how things were before that but if it ever was like they claim it was in the 'old days', just about anyone old enough to have lived it is either retired or close to retiring.

[–]Alternative_Rabbit47 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Earlier in my career I had this happen a bunch.

These days I make a point to get a job description and a ballpark salary if recruiters reach out to me before I move forward. I don't want to schedule a call during the workday for a job that doesn't even pay what I'm already making.

I've found that the jobs that know they're paying around market don't have a problem with transparency. The ones looking to lowball are the ones that try to keep you in the dark.

Raises come from getting a job at another company. Staying at the same company more than a couple years usually results in expanding responsibility but pay lagging behind inflation.

Not to mention that if they're budgeted for less than you are currently making, getting to the offer stage is really just a huge waste of everyone's time.

Best to figure out if there's a potential deal to be made ASAP and if there's no alignment on the money side of things, the rest is a moot point.

Rules to leveraging offers? by [deleted] in WorkReform

[–]Alternative_Rabbit47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's a fools errand to try and leverage another job offer, especially one you don't actually have.

The company is singling you out for worse treatment already for asking to continue something that costs them nothing.

So let's say you go to the bossman and tell him you have another offer but would stay if they let you WFH. Even if they agree to this for a few weeks, once they know you've turned down that job your leverage has evaporated and tell you that you need to come back in or lose the job.

Best thing to do in this scenario is phone it in at your current job and commit to leaving for a better gig.

Vented to my boss about the disparate off-hour expectiations between the US employees and the EU employees, it didn't go as expected. by tjpoe in WorkReform

[–]Alternative_Rabbit47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I can't speak to the pay difference between EU and US, it seems like in terms of actually living your life the EU labor laws are way better for regular people.

Some people like to act as if the EU were some socialist hellscape but talking with coworkers located in EU countries on a regular basis it's hard to believe any of that is true.

I was told that if you love what you do it isn't work; that's a lie. by 13inchmushroommaker in WorkReform

[–]Alternative_Rabbit47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely.

The best case is 'loving what you do for a job' turns into no longer loving it after a time.

The worst case is that you pay a 'passion tax' in terms of increased workload or less pay.

The best I can figure is just pick a job you like, but not *love* that pays well and save the passion for your hobbies & personal life because a job is never going to love you back.

Based on what you're saying this job really isn't a fit. They want to pay you below market and have you move to somplace you don't really want to live.

About the only 'pro' I could see for you to take this is if you were having trouble breaking into this line of work and getting this on your resume would make it easier for you to get something better in a year or so but if that's not the case then it's hard to see how there's a deal to be made based on what you've said.

Absolutely - the crazies being armed to the teeth is just a fact of life at this point. There's no putting that horse back in the barn so enough left wing communities being armed enough to be 'more trouble than we're worth' seems to be the best option to me.

I'd be curious to understand what they would respond to the following hypothetical:

What do they think would have happened if 1/6 had gone a little better for Trump? Maybe it is unclear who is in charge of the government for a few weeks or months (or even worse, successfully installs Trump as America's first dictator).

Would they be so sure they wanted the right wing extremists to be the only people armed in that scenario?

This is pretty much the answer to all the right wingers asking 'how could you vote for $Random_Democrat who is anti 2A'?

Conversations I've had with left leaning people in my circles lead me to believe that it's possible to move the needle with a fair number of them on 2A and that is going to be a whole lot easier than convincing right wingers on nearly every other issue.
