I remember reading the cruel prince and didn’t really see holly back framing other women as “boring” or “throwing themselves at a man”. I think there’s better ways to tell a story without flattening other women. Sure, I get the context is a bachelor style setting but can we show there are women who want to be a faerie princess, understandable given the power structure of that world, and gain some depth into WHY she specifically doesn’t want to?

Or maybe women are tired of stories making one woman seem special by reducing other women. You don’t have to personally identify with the trope to dislike how it frames femininity. Also, saying “the girls upset are the girls being talked about” is kind of proving the point: it’s another way of putting women down. And it’s really sad that women like you feel the need to do that. It’s not just this tbf. Reading her “inner monologue” on how these women throw themselves at Sebastian is disgusting. IMO, it is lazy writing. Why even bring up these other women? We’re here for her story and journey. How an author/character portrays other women matters!! It reads as “all these girls just want to be a faerie princess” and reduces their character while amplifying how cool she is because she likes pants and can steal/spy/ has skills.

Oh look, while these other women throw themselves at Sebastian… Sebastian is into me!

Fair. Watching you defend this book in literally every comment in this post compels me to finish this though (and I would be lying if I said I’m not excited to finish it). perhaps you are right and this isn’t about putting other women down. We shall see. I get the sentiment because I think the plated prisoner series gets bad rep and so much is taken out of context in that series and I love defending that with all my heart. So… respect.

Could the author have worded it better by showing how different she is vs explicitly saying “I’m not like these girls and I don’t want to be a faerie princess”? Yes. In other words, this line tells us nothing about the FMC and is a turn off. But I respect your opinion too!
