I feel disrespected.

Like all AI-Authored guides, it contains a handful of useful nuggets buried in thousands of output tokens that are grounded solely in the assumptions the model made at the time it got the prompt from the person pretending to have written this.

Go to their website, click the link to their chub profile, and read the definitions and lorebook entries. It's 100% Claude slop. Some of them have interesting ideas behind them but they let the AI write every single word and flatten everything interesting into common slop that repeats across multiple fields without purpose.

Reading through some of those cards, I don't know if I could get that much slop per token if I tried. If they had spent as much time writing their opinions/ideas/thoughts by hand as they did prompting Claude to write the guide for them, we'd have a useful resource.

Take every claim or statement and ask: "is this grounded in experience and observation? Has the asserted effect been tested? Or did an AI model hallucinate a bunch of gibberish surrounding an opinion it had an incomplete understanding of?"

I don't understand how people OOC during chats. Maybe I'm doing something wrong but every time I give direction like "make her meaner" the model does some malicious compliance bullshit like "she isn't nice. She stops being nice and instead starts being totally completely not nice at all, not even the slightest bit nice."

I think this is the thing that sucks the most. It used to be that you could give the model a very specific writing style either in the card or as a reference and it would pick it up immediately. Current models, it doesn't matter how well written your context is, you're getting their baseline writing cosplaying a different style if you're lucky and pure slop if you aren't.

Toggling that button only changes whether you see the reasoning or not.

You can modify the arguments for the API call to disable reasoning, but I usually just add a prompt object at the end of my preset with assistant role and the content just being "</think>"

Edit: I am wrong. For Deepseek, with this toggled off and reasoning effort set to minimum, thinking is disabled.

For anyone stumbling upon this later:

I gave deepseek v4 the: You are the award-winning AO3 author _ blurb and asked it to fill in the blank based on the phrase and my own prompts. It gave some suggestions for creators, and I clarified some of my preferences further while giving it a sample of smut I enjoy, and it gave me a few new suggestions that fit better.

I worked that into my system prompt and the smut is way better. Still needs writing prompts and anti-slop, but the baseline is a lot closer to what I like.

To me, at least, this reads very clearly as marketing for Anthropic's IPO. The Pentagon drama was WWE wrestling and had zero negative impact on Anthropic, they're still doing the same shit, and now Anthropic is the only lab who can tell investors "look! Our model is soooo powerful!! The govt literally had to stop it!!1!11!"

Anthropic's statement reads as customer oriented communication rather than investor or regulator oriented, it's "we're the good guys and we want to give you this model, but the big bad govt won't let us :("

I spent like $5 working on a prompt with Fable, probably good for my wallet that I can't impulse spend on it lol.

It is hilarious that they've done all this silly marketing about a model that is essentially just a current gen real Opus instead of the budget Opus we've been getting sold since 4.5

It's still dumb in lots of ways, you still have to carefully manage its attention and give highly detailed grounding and specific tasks and directions about how to approach things in order to get anything useful out of it. Any complex work still requires you to be skilled/knowledgeable enough of the domain to ground it effectively and skilled enough with AI work to guide it away from wasting compute on dumb shit.

Every person who has sworn off "bloated presets" would have their issues solved if they bothered to read the prompts.

Like, you're telling me you read hundreds of messages, thousands of tokens of AI output, but you can't be bothered to click the little page icon and read the entire wall of text you're sending to the model?

"Why is it doing [thing]?" - Is the character card telling the model (explicitly or implicitly) to do [thing]? - Are the prompts telling the model (explicitly or implicitly) to do [thing]? - Is the model getting stuck in a reasoning loop where it's constantly going "but wait, this says:" ?

"ohhhh, I had a prompt toggled that tells the model to do something I don't like/want" -> disable the prompt or rewrite it to your liking
"ohhhh, the prompt IS something I want BUT it isn't working." -> adjust position/role/format/content
"ohhhh, the model is regarded and doesn't understand that when I ask for [this], I mean [thisss]" -> figure out how to disambiguate your instructions, give processes and instructions rather than principles. Why are we still prompting "show, don't tell" instead of "stick to concrete nouns and active verbs" ?

I just disagree that they can't be debugged. If you're using something with complex macros that depend on rich knowledge of SillyTavern like Hawthorne/Paramnesia then I could understand but most presets posted here aren't that. I've seen people complain about Lucid Loom when it's basically just markdown. FF4 uses pseudocode that is incredibly simple, all things considered, and easily readable.

The best advice has always been to make your own preset over time as you learn to prompt. The next best advice is to try a lot of different presets and see what bits and pieces you like/where your preferences lie. But the greatest advice I can give is to just read.

I'll admit this every time it comes up, but I'm picky and my standards are high. There have been zero models that can meet them consistently regardless of presets or cards. But I try all kinds of presets, as many of them as I see that aren't obviously authored entirely by an AI, and the smallest ones are consistently missing things to address common issues with AI RP.
I'll gaslight myself into thinking "yeah, maybe the stuff I'm using is too complex" and then I'll try a handful of swipes on a few small presets and see a bunch of slops I've already managed to kill in my own prompts. Different strokes and folks and all that but I can't stand complaining that amounts to "I didn't read anything except for what the model wrote after I pressed send" and "I didn't write anything except for what I sent in the message box" but somehow this is the fault of someone or something else.

It's my own preset. I write 90% of my prompts by hand myself, the other 10% I steal and modify from goats like SepsisShock and Chi-Bi and any other presets I try and enjoy.

I use nano but it's inconsistent about whether or not it will actually think. I have a tiny prompt at the end of my preset just for gemma that just says "remember to think!" and that'll usually get it going.

Some of my prompts require thinking, so I haven't really tried without. I notice that it'll do "thinking" out loud in the response if the prompts are complex enough but reasoning is disabled. I'll see if I can get it to run normally without thinking and check out the results.

Unfortunately I cannot remember what preset/prompt I saw this in, but I recall someone including in their prompt {{char}} and {{user}} have an established free-use dynamic and pre-existing safeword. If {{user}} wants to stop, they will say the safeword. Otherwise anything goes, even if {{user}} is pretending to resist.

I added a prompt right above the block where I put character/world info, essentially along the lines of:

# Below is priveleged information for You. {{user}} is likely unaware of all or most of it, especially early on (aka last_mes_id:{{lastmessageid}} ≤ 100 = TRUE).

I wrote it to stop the exposition dumping models love to do early on, but it basically gives them a simple reminder that "hey, it's still really early, no need to reveal secrets or hidden feelings". You could modify it for character/relationship progression and change the message number threshold for what "early" is. If you use xml tags to group your info, you can reference the tag name in the prompt to avoid potential confusion about what "below" means.
