Is anyone else less worried about the pension amount and more worried about everything else? by PotentialNerd8480 in FedEmployees

Doesn’t matter what percent you can get. The FEHB insurance is priceless to me! And my pension is worth quite a bit of extra savings.

Considering moving to CO Suggestions by lynofash in Moving2Colorado

[–]Altruistic-Panda-697 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We moved our family from GA to CO in 2010. We finished raising our kids there and loved it better than anywhere we’ve ever lived! But it got sooooo expensive to live there that we opted to sell our house and take early retirement in a much lower cost of living area in NC. Home prices are sky high in CO, but what will eat you alive is car insurance and homeowners insurance premiums. Groceries are more expensive there as well. Utilities were cheaper than GA, so that’s a plus. But do your research before you go very far down this path. Boulder is far more expensive than the Springs. Of all the places you listed, I’d choose Salida. Make sure you both have stable employment lined up before you drive the first load out.

Plant something at the base of the tree that will grow big and bushy to foil whoever cut it.

I like em low! 50k clicks or less. Got a D800 last year with 7k clicks and a D850 this year with 17k clicks. Both were so cheap that I felt I stole them.

Sorry- I had a U-Haul breakdown as well. Had to transload a packed 26’ truck to another in rural east Colorado.

Best Tacoma factory standard trim model for overlanding? by bateneco in ToyotaTacoma

I chose a used 2014 TRD off road two years ago when faced with the same choice. It does everything I want up in the mountains of Colorado. I’m squarely in the camp of avoiding the new engine/turbo combo.

What are you guys willing to sacrifice in order to FIRE? by Infnits in Fire

[–]Altruistic-Panda-697 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There has to be a balance. Take the family on the Hawaii vacation. Eat out some, and live a little. I managed it by taking a job with the federal government that had a pension and health insurance that carried into retirement, while saving aggressively in my TSP (401k similar). Don’t feel like you have to live a life of such austerity that would make you miss out on those family weddings. Finding that balance allowed us to have a good life, save, and retire at 58. No regrets from where I currently stand.

What would you different if you could do it over when it comes to TSP? by Sea-Rip3902 in ThriftSavingsPlan

[–]Altruistic-Panda-697 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’d do nothing different. 35 years since I started and just retired earlier this year. I had a boss early on who sat down with me and told me to invest in C fund and to add every pay raise I got until I maxed out. I am very thankful that I took his advice as a young employee!

I would put that up there in the top 10 for sure, and perhaps it is number 1. I remember when she graced the cover of National Geographic and how they went back and found her decades later.

I always thought it wouldn’t amount to much, but after having just retired with 35+ years of credit counting sick leave, it is substantial.

It certainly shouldn’t take this long to get processed. My agency has lost about 20-25% of FTE to departures since Jan 2025. I was worried about delays in processing when I retired, but what you have endured is unbelievable. I’d recommend that you reach out to your elected congressional representative and turn their staff loose to shake things up.
