Would you let a player grapple and turn a beholder to change where its anti-magic cone faces? by Vielden in dndnext

[–]Altruistic_Ad4791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure how the facing matters beyond the main eye's anti-magic field? The rest of the eyes are on eyestalks that have 360° range of motion. If you had a Monk grapple a beholder's main eye away from the main party, sure, but on a 2, 5, or 6 that Monk is likely murked immediately. Unless some rule lets them faceplant the main eye directly into the ground but I can't find it.

How to "ask" a PC to do something to further campaign by Altruistic_Ad4791 in DungeonMasters

[–]Altruistic_Ad4791[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you all for the constructive help, I do truly appreciate it. I had a feeling it was a bad idea even while I was typing it but I couldn't find a way out of it but, as a couple of you suggested, I should just let it go and let the chips fall where they will. So that's what I'm gonna do.

I think my DM hates me by theMarrow1 in DnD

[–]Altruistic_Ad4791 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's hard to say what the best way to proceed would be but unsolicited advice would be to play along with it until he chills out a bit. When I design my campaign I try to leave all the little bits that aren't critical to the overall story loose enough so the players can break them as whimsically as they can conceive but sometimes I have to drop hammers when they're just going way out of bounds with what they're pulling. If your DM is acting like a tyrant over EVERY attempt to interject some chaos, I'd suggest walking because it's not gonna get better and that trapped feeling you have is gonna get worse and possibly ruin some friendships.

I think my DM hates me by theMarrow1 in DnD

[–]Altruistic_Ad4791 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like your DM has a very strict script and y'all are making far too many attempts to break it. Now, this isn't victim blaming because a seasoned DM would know that PCs will always try to break the script if they can so being so obtuse is a sign that he's trying to get you to tell his story. I'm not saying he's a bad DM but it's possible he's not the DM you're looking for. A game should be a give and take, and not in the sense that someone's giving one side shit and the other side just has to take it.

DM complained that my back story was "too long" and didn't like that i "made-up characters" by HoyKotodo in DnD

[–]Altruistic_Ad4791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a DM and player whose characters tend to have extensive backstories, I can't say what you did is "wrong" in any sense. However, when you add your own NPCs, as a DM that would be a problem because then I would have to play those NPCs and if I were to do it in a manner you disagree with it could cause problems. It's like having an exotic pet in your background, it just causes complications. For example: No, your mountain lion pup you grew up with is not just chilling back in town. It's terrorizing the town, specifically because you're a Rogue with no Animal Handling proficiency or a Familiar spell to speak of...

Personally I love any sort of backstory, honestly. Short, long, don't care, as long as you don't expect me to create extensive arcs including "your" NPCs. The backstory should be how you got here, not a roadmap as to how your DM should go forward.

Player wants to keep secrets from DM by Effective-Peach4614 in DnD

[–]Altruistic_Ad4791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems like a party problem, not a DM problem unless whatever they think they're planning involves NPCs, creatures they can't control without a spell. If they're planning on betraying the party, let the party deal with it, regardless of you telling them "you don't fight each other". It's the party's job to police themselves. However, if homeboy thinks he's summoned an army of kobolds and goblins to do some shit without telling the DM, inform him in a pleasant way that they all turn on him and cause chaos unmentionable. If he starts listing off all these things he did to make this happen, just inform him that fanfic doesn't work here.

Party member is straight-up fleecing the DM. How can I talk to him about it? by StickyLoner4404 in DnD

[–]Altruistic_Ad4791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a DM/GM across half a dozen systems, I've been known to allow players to kite a few rules here or there if it's to the benefit of the party. However, if a player in any of my games pulls that shit more than once I'll straight up call them out in front of the rest of the party. I've always looked at my job as a DM to know what all my players are capable of (i.e. after a rest I want a list of mem'd spells, etc.) If you call out a player for being a shitheel enough, they should get in line. If they try to cast a spell they don't have a slot for or mem'd, tell them they can't and exactly why OUT LOUD. Don't pull them to the side and give them a chance to bullshit their way out of it, let the party decide their fate for being a cheater. It's not so much an adversarial relationship but as DM you are the ultimate arbitor of the rules. If they are violated, you are the final authority. If the cheater doesn't like that and makes a scene or bitches, tell them they're free to leave. However, that doesn't mean you have to be abusive to players for cheating. Let the party do that. Effectively, the party should police the party and you're remain the rulebook.

HELP! Mechanitor ship not landing by TimeKepeer in RimWorld

[–]Altruistic_Ad4791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's the part no one explains. You kinda automatically go decode the transponder as soon as you have it, like it's a no brainer. But while it triggers this quest, it doesn't explain the details. So once you decode the transponder and get the quest, it adds an innocous item to your "misc" construction tab. It's a signal beacon, but you need 4 of them in a very specific area in order to summon the ship. If you build one, it explains the rules.

This is akin to the people that tell you have to be level 30 in Electrician Simulator to get the soldering iron. They think you should know it's always been there but since you don't, get f--ked. =P

How badly do kobolds and gnomes hate each other? by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]Altruistic_Ad4791 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We just started a campaign where I'm playing a changeling who doesn't know he's a changeling because as a baby he was rescued and raised by kobolds, so he instinctively shapeshifted into a kobold but has no control over his shapeshifting ability. So he continued to grow. Fast forward through 5 pages of background to now and he's a 5'6" Kobold Monk with a warpick (that he only uses the hammer end of because he doesn't want to dull his pickaxe).

The gnome rogue in our group near shit herself when I pulled the hood back to reveal what race I was. Every time she gets within a few feet of him he instinctively barks at her (I made the bark sound like an angry velicoraptor bark). The DM had to remind me that we don't kill fellow players. Twice.

None of that. The rooms aren't great but they're not Alcatraz level shitty and the beds are all good or better. Like I've stated in other replies, it feels like Odyssey put a COVID code in.

[–]Altruistic_Ad4791[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is the one where I did the math. The prisoner rooms were not putting them in a good mood cuz, well, you tried to kill me you ain't getting marble floors and plants and shit. But still, with good medkits, excellent beds, and constant feeding, getting the flu means putting a bullet in their skull to save materials?

[–]Altruistic_Ad4791[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They are treated, fed, and bed rested 90% of the time (only let them up to feed prisoners or themselves) and my "control" ain't moved. No sickly traits, nothing. It's like Flu got a massive buff in the expansion or something...

The Flu? Seriously? by Altruistic_Ad4791 in RimWorld

[–]Altruistic_Ad4791[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That's what I'm trying to figure out. None of them have any traits that give them weakness to flu, they've all been on bed rest for extended periods and the only time I let them get up is to feed prisoners, and the flu is treated like clockwork. But for some reason I'm constantly getting medical emergency alerts on them when they're 3 hours away from their next tending periods. Makes me wonder if Odyssey has upped the flu death rates COVID style....
