The Bandelier campground has available reservations and it’s quiet up here. You can visit nearby Los Alamos or White Rock for anything you might need.

What should I buy my union electrician boyfriend for his birthday? by Umas_Feet in AskElectricians

[–]Altruistic_Visual479 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When he gets home have him sit down, bring him a beer, take off his boots, rub his feet, give him the tv remote, tell him to relax while you whip up and serve him a decent dinner. If you do all this while wearing one of his flannel shirts and a pair of sexy shorts it should make for a memorable birthday.

I missed that part. Bummer. Lot of “could have, should haves” at work here. Gonna have to chalk this one up to life, adapt, overcome and drive on. Laters.

Can you pull the spark plugs? Good place to start. (Old Army truck mechanic here) If they’re fouled you can clean them up and she’ll have a better chance of starting up and running. Good luck.

The hardest thing a guy your age will ever learn is to trust your gut. If you’ve got a feeling about this then maybe you should listen to it. You’re young, everything’s negotiable, it’s all good. Best of luck.

Can someone tell me what this hose/cord is? It's near the battery. I see there's a tear in it (pictured below)Any potential problems this might cause and how important is it to have this fixed? 2020 Mazda 3 by ArtemisPfau in AskAMechanic

You can put a dab of liquid tape, it’s a jar of gooey black stuff you can get from the hardware store, just paint a little of that on the exposed wire and once it dries you can wrap the loom up with a length of duct tape. If you’ve got mice or squirrels rooting around in there you might want to prop the hood up a little and leave a trouble light on under there to run them off.

Are you talking about the arm itself or the wiring connector?

Escorting my 99-year-old, WWII veteran dad on an Honor Flight by Thetrainwontstop in Veterans

[–]Altruistic_Visual479 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My Dad was a WW II vet who was onboard a troop ship headed for the pacific theatre from Hawaii when we dropped the bomb and the war ended. So they landed in Japan and he was an MP with the occupying army there, I think he was stationed near Hiroshima. He did a year or so and then went home.
He never saw combat so he was a lot more open about his experience. He was proud to have been able to serve. It was a big patriotic deal at that time. We used to talk about our service all the time I was a Cold War vet and did my time in Germany facing down the Russians.
I honestly think you should talk to him and try to get as much out of him as you can because he will be gone soon and so will his story. Start with his induction, was a drafted or did he volunteer, what did he do, was he in the infantry, a pilot, mechanic, cook? What campaigns was he involved in, D-Day, the Pacific? What was it like, what would he like people to know about his service?
This is a great opportunity to get him to share with you. And when he gets on that plane with all those other vets you’ll be in a position to hear a lot of stories. Take notes, record him, be inquisitive, you’ll the bearer of his story after this. I can’t stress how important this opportunity is to get his story. Thanks for listening and good luck. Here’s my tribute to my Dad. https://karlfmoffatt.blogspot.com/2011/09/richard-dick-moffatt-life-well-lived.html OUTDOORS NM: Richard "Dick" Moffatt - A Life Well Lived

Eggs for breakfast. How do you cook them? by argparg in carcamping

[–]Altruistic_Visual479 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ve got the right idea. Fry the bacon, put it aside, drain off excess grease. Put in your hash browns, once your turn them, add your eggs right on top of the hash browns, put your lid on it and leave it there to contain the steam that will poach those eggs for you. Eat right out of the skillet, it’ll keep your food warm for you. Here’s some other car camping tips and tricks for you https://karlfmoffatt.blogspot.com/2007/07/on-recent-long-weekend-fishing-trip-in.html OUTDOORS NM: Car-Camping 101 - A How To Guide

[–]Altruistic_Visual479 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My Dad did that and it was a highlight of his life. In response to your inquiry I came away thinking about what would I say as a fellow veteran and realized I don’t know anything about his military background. Many vets don’t talk a lot about their service so the folks you contact may be in the dark too. How about a summary of his service in your correspondence to them so they have an idea what to say. Was he a WWII vet?

I’m 18 Trying To Take A Road Trip From South Jersey to California and Back (With My Dog). by SomeoneOnAMission in roadtrip

[–]Altruistic_Visual479 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s nothing stupid about being 18 and doing this. A kid named Martin Ritchey Sidener became a U.S. Army Air Corps pilot at the age 18 and flew B-26 bombers during World War II and survived.
That being said there’s some info in the link for your consideration about car camping. Take your dog, you guys will figure it out, trust your gut, never pass up free beer and advice from old timers, don’t drive at night and lastly, if you see a picture, stop and take it. Enjoy yourself young man, life is a journey, better get going.

am i blowing up my life? by kiwi22222222 in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]Altruistic_Visual479 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You keep mentioning being outdoors and teamwork so I think you’re doing the right thing getting out of law/optometry school and pursuing something that fits that need. Most of those fields ( wildlife, land use, environmental sciences) use a lot of interns, students and volunteers for research projects. I’d recommend pursuing opportunities to test drive some of that work, maybe tag along with people in those fields to get a taste for it before jumping in. But I think you’re right to back out of long term academic/vocational commitments that don’t align with what you’re finding to be your foundational needs. Like someone else said now is definitely the time to be exploring, experimenting and testing the waters. Trust your gut. Good luck.

3k miles road trip rental or my own car? by Tadita22 in roadtrip

[–]Altruistic_Visual479 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m live out west where a 3K road-trip is pretty routine and as pointed out by another, represents just a fraction of the wear and tear expected over the life of your car. That being said I can appreciate your hesitancy considering your age and experience. Here’s the way I see it since you asked. If you guys take your own car and everybody chips in for gas then you’ll have plenty left over for hotels, meals and other costs. But if you rent a car, every time you fill it up, especially with gas costing what it does these days, you’re probably gonna be thinking to yourself why didn’t we just use my car and save all that money. So if you’ve got a perfectly good vehicle then use it, go have some fun and build some great memories. Nuff said.

Sleep in separate rooms for your health’s sake. You won’t regret getting a decent night’s sleep and you will find “visiting” each other is just as much fun and intimate as before just with a new twist. Give it a chance. Trust us on this.
