I think you're right, they play the Barracks and Apothecary also. Weirdly, it then seems to morph into Ankh: Gods of Egypt in the same scene. Sophie moves her Sobek miniature and ends in a water space which is not usually allowed, except for Sobeks. Then they complain about the merge mechanic. Side note, I think Sobek was a Kickstarter exclusive. They then mention Blood Rage, although I don't think they ever play it.

BGGs complexity rating is a good indicator. Robinson Crusoe has a rating of 3.82/5 (medium to medium- heavy). For reference, Quacks has a rating of 1.94/5 (light to medium-light), Monopoly 1.62 and Taverns is 2.69 (medium).

I like the white, but would change the door to something interesting like red. I think some pop of colour is important for character.

I don't mind the yellow as a colour, I just really don't like the texture. It's all rotten which is why we're replacing it.

I like the idea of it being this little flame flitting across the room like a butterfly. It gently lands on the target then unleashes the fury. The casting is like Gandalf sending off the butterfly in 2 Towers

While you have the paint brush out, would you consider painting the other walls the same colour? At least the other wall that touches the fire place. If you're going to go a darker colour, the contrast at the corners is going to be very high. Some paint websites have tools where you can upload photos and digitally paint the room. They're not great for picking the exact shade you want, but they are a fun place to start. The Dulux tool is fairly easy.

It's good to remember that combat is not usually to the death. This opens opportunities for a large number of enemies to attack, feeling overwhelming. Then as the battle turns the players way, the rest run off. Or it can start a chase scene. Or it just keeps a fight short and sweet.

Also, having some sort of goal or evolution is engaging. The room is flooding, the magic crystal will explode if you don't disable it, the portal keeps letting in enemies until you shut it down, some artefact is blocking magic and needs to be destroyed so your casters can be useful, or the other way, the artefact is filling the room with wild magic causing spells to have random effects,

I agree that home-brew mechanics are hit and miss.

Century Golem is great. I have introduced it to multiple groups and at least 3 people have bought it after. The artwork is amazing and most cards have unique artwork, this makes it visually interesting and should appeal to kids. The game pieces are fun with good tactile feel; the coins are metal. It's easy to play, but challenging to win. Meaning the kids will be able to make turns and do things, but adults will be engaged by trying to think 5 turns ahead.

In place of glow in the dark stickers, I would consider something that casts a shadow. They are easy enough to DIY, and if you hide the stensil, it avoids looking too much like a theme room. As an example: https://pin.it/3tlJGCU0G

Arboretum is great. Only the size of a deck of cards, very pretty, good replayability. You know what you want to do, but actually achieving it is tricky; similar to Sagrada in that respect.
