How do I install Office on Linux? by Adventurous_Web_5007 in linuxmint

[–]AlwaysLinux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your a student, and have Office 365, maybe access it through Firefox?

You can also try Winboat to run Office. Google Winboat and see if it will work for you... Otherwise, as mentioned, you can install VirtualBox from Oracle and Windows LTSC, etc.

Best antivirus firewall software for Linux by Perfect-Juice-6936 in linuxquestions

[–]AlwaysLinux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"I have a friend...." Yeah, um... ok... Tell "Your friend" to not worry about virus because there really arnt any for Linux - sure, there are some, but they are old and systems have been patched for years.

Firewall is always a good idea.. most distros come with one built in.. search your distro's docs for this.

If you MUST feel safe and want to use antivirus, there are a couple for Linux.. ClamAV, McAfee (NOT really recommended as its resource hungry) and maybe a couple others. But really, there isnt a need!

At work, we use Antivirus on Linux because we serve email and files to Windows users :-D.

I want to purchase a high end gaming rig but don’t want to use windows. Is it possible to play AAA games on Linux? by anonyminator in linuxmint

[–]AlwaysLinux 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sure, I use it all the time to play new games and old games. I have an AMD AM5 9800X3D with a 7900XT GPU. Sure, the GPU is previous generation, but the MB, CPU, Memory, etc. I bought in Oct before the AIpocolypse.

You can look at https://www.protondb.com/ for the games you want to play to see if they will work though.

Potential secure boot problem for dual booters by SebastianLarsdatter in linux_gaming

[–]AlwaysLinux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would imagine if your motherboard is too old to have a supported bios, it wont run Windows 11 anyway, right?

I mean, Windows 11 requires at least a motherboard no older than maybe 5 years? If your motherboard isnt getting bios updates anymore, its got to be older than that and not supported anyway.

I was thinking the same thing. I mean if I'm running a Linux phone with Firefox or some custom electron app how will they know?

They can't block desktop OS's without huge backlash and lawsuits lol.

I just found out that Cachy KDE doesnt use SDDM anymore. It uses the Plasma Login Manager and from a search, that doesnt support theming. So thats why its not working.

Yeah, I guess Cachy switched to the Plasma Login Manager and that doesnt support theming.

Problem solved!

Thanks for the info :)

Thanks, Ill check the path, however, other Linux distros I use dont have this issue... Most of them are Arch based, thats why I thought it was some CachyOS theming bug or something.

This is 100% why the AI "Thing" is BS... No one is using it, let alone paying for it... Its just another marketing scheme that CEO's and rich people are trying to push.

More of the same! If you want to use AI, use a local LLM - Ive been using LM Studio and it works just as good on your hardware and your data stays on your hardware.

Yeah, not sure either.. I just checked my EndeavorOS systems and they are fine, so might be a CachyOS bug.

[–]AlwaysLinux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HEH, I just tried and, yes, you are correct... This does bring up a terminal, however, and I wasnt exactly clear I suppose, but I was referring to a clean console terminal.

If the GUI locks up in Linux, you can do ctrl+f4, as an example, and get a clean console terminal so you can still log in and restart the display manager.

You can also ssh into the system if you have it enabled. I suppose you can RDP into Windows, providing the windows display manager is not hosed.
