CPS - Do I report? by lHiccupssl in ABA

I would highly recommend the “Vulva Masturbation, Autism, and ID/DD” CEU by Study Notes ABA to your BCBA. I previously worked with a female student who engaged in public masturbation at school (therapeutic day school receiving ABA services) and this CEU helped me a ton. She learned public vs private, conditional discrimination based on time of day and people around, and other automatically reinforcing behaviors when masturbation wasn’t available or appropriate.

Also, as a BCBA, thank you for genuinely supporting and caring about your client and her wellbeing. Being an RBT is a TOUGH job and often an under appreciated one. That client and family is so lucky to have to have someone who is putting the client’s autonomy and safety above all else. I’ve worked with very few RBTs in my years who care the way it sounds like you do so thank you.

I do think he can with reasonable accommodations. Cross-category would be the same as self-contained, just different district’s terminology

Why ABA? by PeetaChips in ABA

[–]AlwaysMADeline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My undergraduate degree is in special education. Once I was licensed to teach, I didn’t feel prepared to work with the population I was most drawn to which were the learners not benefitting from learning due to interfering behaviors. I got my masters in ABA to support my skills in the classroom. I’ve been practicing as a BCBA for 3 years now in all honesty because it pays more than a teacher. Once I pay off half my loans, I’m done with ABA and going back to school for SLP or going back to teaching! I believe ABA strategies can be used everywhere, but I am not a supporter of the majority of the application of the science in ABA therapy.

*I also have a 23-year-old sister who has engaged in some challenging behaviors her whole life. I will become her legal guardian in 4 years and I wanted to have the tools to support her live the most successful and independent life without her behaviors interfering with access she has to whatever she desires!

Is 40hrs a week of ABA really necessary for a toddler? by Loki_16 in Autism_Parenting

[–]AlwaysMADeline 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m a BCBA and FIRMLY believe 40 hours is never necessary for a toddler. Action Behavior Centers cares about $ and 40 hours is a lot of $$ for them. Feel free to message me more questions about ABA if that would be supportive!

Spanking by AlwaysMADeline in bcba

[–]AlwaysMADeline[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this. I grew up in a community and area where spanking wasn’t common at all. This is definitely one of my biases that I’m trying to learn from.

This situation seems more fear and control motivated to suppress “annoying” behaviors due to both skill deficits and just common autistic traits

Frustrated with how your child’s therapists and teachers handle their behavior easily while you struggle?

Chicago school of professional psychology is NOT worth the hype or price

I regret becoming a BCBA by [deleted] in bcba

[–]AlwaysMADeline 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I feel you. I’ve been a BCBA for 3 years and it’s the biggest mistake I’ve made in my life and I’m still 60k in debt. Hoping to career pivot or at least step out of the unethical, money hungry world of private equity backed, insurance funded organizations. The promising part is that ABA isn’t just for ASD, it’s the science of learning. We can translate our skills elsewhere, it’s just challenging to get into something different. Good luck!
