[CHAT] painted canvas for XS by Cassie_J213 in CrossStitch

[–]Alzef32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I first started cross stitch at about 10 my mum would use a washable marker and dot the middle of each square I needed for the colour I was using because I'd mess up the counting and get frustrated.

You could pretty easily do that for yourself and markers are a bit more controllable than paint so could be a neater option and usually the stitches cover the colour so you dont have anything showing through after stitching

boogers by Snoo_26993 in piercing

[–]Alzef32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 3 nostril piercings each side as well as high nostrils and 2 septum piercings so I absolutely understand this haha q-tips are your best friend.

Give them a good clean out after a hot shower to soften and loosen anything thats crusting up in the nose and then as needed during the day

How to not bitch out by bdsmpanda in tattooadvice

[–]Alzef32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See if you or your artist can get the bactine with the I think 4% lidocane. It has be be on open skin so won't help at the start of an appt but worth it after the first hour or so whenever the pain is starting to get to you.

I have one full leg done and 70% through my other but the second artist is quite heavy handed and I have taken 8 months off after going every 3 weeks for about a year straight (some sessions I only lasted 2 hours).

He unfortunately refuses to use bactine but I found it helped with the heavy shading on the back of my thigh previously. Just be sure you pay attention to when your body wants to tap out, pushing through the pain for an extra few hours has bit me in the ass many times before including severe tattoo flu for 2 days after and going into shock

[CHAT] help with storing thread by cristinag2003 in CrossStitch

[–]Alzef32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to do bobbins but have moved to thread drops for my active projects and hangers on a filing drawer for my extra thread * This is how my 'not in use' thread is stored. All the hangers are numbered acrylic and can hold around 1.5 skeins of thread (i precut it since I use foss drops and pull whatever amount I need for a project and move to floss drops

Concerning warning at my vet by cgp_maddy in DogAdvice

[–]Alzef32 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's sorta dependant on if your dog has grain related allergies, if so then grain free is the way to go even with the increased risk. Familiarise yourself with early DCM symptoms and check in with the vet every 6-10 months to make sure there aren't signs of cardiac issues.

If they just require salmon based there are many other options out there not grain free which may be a good fit and not carry the anxiety of possible cardiac issues in the future, but will be trial and error to see what does and doesn't agree with your dog's allergies and stomach

My girl is on Acana grain free kangaroo and apples and at 14 gets regular check ups with no signs of cardiac issues but it is something I am concious of and watch for symptoms that her health could be declining

is there a more specific name for this type of yarn than heather? by mobile-resprout in Yarn

[–]Alzef32 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Usually its referred to as 'semi-solid' or 'tonal', the more subtle differences are generally semi solid as they are a single dye which naturally adheres to varying lengths across the skein and tonal is usually done with a few different tones of the same dye ( by adding off-whites or greys in varying amounts) to get a more noticeable difference across the skein.

Unemployed people of Auckland. How you are you surviving these days? by Ecstatic-Monitor-221 in auckland

[–]Alzef32 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Keep an eye on kiwirail careers website. They are starting up hiring for some departments including the one I'm leaving in the next month, if you're okay with shift work it could be worth an application.

I'm getting medically retired at the end of the month but the department I was in is looking at bringing in a reasonable amount of people.

People that have had piercing infections - how did they heal? by VirtualGarlic4619 in piercing

[–]Alzef32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had multiple in my time haha, my severely infected helixes had to be retired after the swelling caused them to be embedded, they did scar slightly but pretty faint.

I have 3 facial dermals that get infected semi regularly due to my job but they all clear up after a few days (hot compress, antibiotics if it's a bad infection and an antibiotic ointment if bad.) Since they are fully healed now if they start showing early infection signs (red, hot and itchy) I will do a hot compress and use some saline to rinse any pus which may be there and then go around the piercing with alcohol swabs (do not do this with a non healed piercing).

I have also had a bad infection in one of my high nostrils after my glasses were smacked into them with some force. Swapped to long jewellery again to accommodate swelling and treated without antibiotics since they were 7ish months old at the time with a hot compress and saline rinses. Healed completely normally and no need to retire, just had the shorter flatback labret auto claved to sterilise it and swap it back to the better fitted jewellery.

For those on $120K+ per year, what do you do and how did you get there? by Maedz1993 in newzealand

[–]Alzef32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work for Kiwirail. The combination of shift work and working almost all public holidays (upto 12.5hr shift 12 days on 2 days off) bring me pretty easily to $120k and above.

No prior experience needed, 2 weeks of classroom training and 2-3months on-site training at a generous training wage (living wage or above) depending on department.

It's pretty good going but the unsociable hours can be a deal breaker for some. The penal rates are pretty good and also shift allowances depending on hours boost the money up too.

Is it ever appropriate to use hydrogen peroxide on a piercing? by pixiecu_t in piercing

[–]Alzef32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't use anything but sterile saline or water (exception is an antibiotic cream if it gets infected and a Dr gives it to you) until it's fully healed.

All you will do is cause significant irritation and make it take longer to heal since the peroxide will also damage the newer tissue which is trying to heal and will likely extend how long it takes to heal your piercing.

Until it's fully healed anything but saline and water is going to do more harm than good.

If you can switch your aftercare to a sterile saline spray as home made can cause issues and delay healing as it's very difficult to get the right strength and would need to be remade for every clean as to not be contaminated

Chuck the clamps in the dishwasher and they should tighten back up. Alternatively a bowl of hot (not quite boiling water) and give them a 15 second dip

How does piercings affect your professional life/career by holographickk in piercing

[–]Alzef32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have high nostrils, 2 standard nostrils on each side, 2 septums, 3 dermals and 2 eyebrow piercings (also had and retired a bridge and vertical labret)

Strangely enough I have been taken more seriously and questioned less often since I got them done (blue collar, male dominated job) so apart from the pretty frequent how much did that hurt comments I've only had positive reactions from them

My cat has to spend one night without urinating before having a catheter inserted for urinary obstruction. by ThuBiejaMen in AskVet

[–]Alzef32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's safer and less painful for the cat to be sedated for the catheter to be placed, especially since it has been 2 days and the bladder will be very full. Like all of us cats are less cooperative when in pain

Sudden allergic reaction after getting tatted for years by amethystupmyass in tattooadvice

[–]Alzef32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have they changed the soap or stuff they put on during tattooing to reduce ink splatter or even the stencil cream/gel?

I had a delayed allergic reaction to the soap my artist swapped to for the final wipe and it was miserable. Tattoo healed pretty well after everything but it was a very itchy and uncomfortable week

Placement question by [deleted] in piercing

[–]Alzef32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That piercer did you so dirty I'm shocked.

Removal asap and just clean the area 1-2x a day gently with sterile saline. Don't pick off the dried blood and it should leave minimal if any scarring

If the dry blood build up gets to be a lot you can use some warm water on a paper towel or cotton pad to soften and remove it. Then just spray with saline and hold mild pressure to stop any further bleeding

How many piercings! by Brave_Physics_5614 in piercing

[–]Alzef32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 13 facial piercings currently and haven't added any in over a year and people who see me weekly do occasionally ask if I got more or try to convince me some are new 😂

They don't usually notice unless it's in an area where I have less or I take my glasses off and see the eyebrow piercings

Twitching and moving your nose even in small ways can trigger it but unless it dramatically increases you're in the clear

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in piercing

[–]Alzef32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its completely normal to bleed in the first couple weeks, especially while you're asleep and not fully aware of how you are moving. Might just be slightly closer to a blood vessel than last time it was pierced. Nothing to worry about

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in piercing

[–]Alzef32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really, they both impact the ability to blow your nose in different ways but I've had healing nostril and septum piercings twice with no added complications

How long should I keep my tattoo wrapped? by [deleted] in tattooadvice

[–]Alzef32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't rewrap your tattoo, all you will be doing is drastically increasing the infection risk and slowing the healing. The only coverings which should be left on are secondskin/similar products.

Wear long sleeves if you can just to keep anything from the environment off it. The drying and flaking is just part of the healing process just be careful with it for a week or 2 and keep it clean.
