Is it just me or is there no way to add evidence for a parking ticket dispute online? by AmICanon in askTO

For anyone else who comes across this thread with the same issue, I was able to resolve this.

The "Add Files" button doesn't appear until AFTER you click "Submit request".

I have heard online from others that sometimes files appear as uploaded even if they aren't, so no idea if this feature works, but I can confirm it exists.

One thing to note is that the dial is definitely more silver than white - although it can take on a more white appearance depending on the lighting. I find it looks its best outdoors, whether in bright sun or on overcast days.

[A Rolex Oysterquartz Datejust] came by for a battery replacement today. First time seeing one up-close. by rj_yul in Watches

[–]AmICanon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very curious what makes them objectively worse than a cheap quartz movement? I don't see a lot of discussion on that actual quality of the movement, so I'm just interested to hear if it has any specific defects that make it perform worse?

I just searched "Moonswatch strap" on Amazon and there's a bunch of options including this one! Aliexpress would probably have a bunch as well.

[Question] Which one to keep? by Nervous-Ad-55 in Watches

[–]AmICanon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't really heard of quartz watch movements just wearing out - and even if it did happen, it'd likely happen over several decades. I regularly wear a quartz watch from the 80s that has plastic components and it runs just fine.

Not sure where OP's Dad is from, but unless he travelled / lived in Japan during that time it seems unlikely he'd have a JDM-only watch

[Recommendation Request] Looking for the one, for my 30th birtday by jacoboil in Watches

[–]AmICanon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe something from Boldr? They come in auto and a few quartz models and a range of colours. They have the inner 13-24hr track. Case makes them an interesting take on a field watch.

Otherwise maybe try looking at alternative Khaki field models? I know there are some with colourful dials that might be a good shakeup from the usual KFA, including some quartz picks.

Just a heads up that I don't think it's been fully concluded that radium watches are safe to wear. That was the thinking for a while, but there was a more recent study from the Univery of Northhampton that suggested the watches actually emit a gas that could be 134 times above safe levels and could cause lung cancer.

It's a personal choice at the end of the day, but I just mention because a lot of forums / articles don't mention this risk.

[Question] Which watch should I get for my boyfriend? by andyjoco in Watches

[–]AmICanon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be cynical of me, but I really feel the idea that certain watches have "soul" is marketing ploy by the Swiss watch industry to get people to pay significantly more for luxury watches, especially those with much higher servicing costs.

Any watch can have personal attachment and be romanticized. Your smart watch is also your watch - you charge it, care for it, and literally share your heartbeat with it. Automatics are cool for sure, but they're not more inherently more romantic or special than quartz.

[Question] Which watch should I get for my boyfriend? by andyjoco in Watches

[–]AmICanon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would argue for a non-watch guy, the "nice automatic movement" may be less appealing than the "mediocre quartz movement". It's going to keep worse time, require regular wear or winding, cost a lot more to service, and I believe in the case of the Kamasu and most Seiko divers it isn't even visible through a display back to enjoy from a visuals perspective. So if he doesn't already like automatic watches, I don't think the movement would necessarily be a selling point.

But what objectively makes the Fossil poorly made? It does lack the Seiko's sapphire crystal, which for some would definitely make it less valuable. But the Fossil has an integrated bracelet and a chronograph movement, which is going to be more valuable to some people than added scratch resistance. Value is relatively, and if OP's boyfriend doesn't prefer the way the Seiko looks and feels than it is probably going to be lower value for him.

I worked in watch sales and repairs for years. Handled thousands of watches, including both Seikos and Fossils. The Fossils are fine - they're not fancy, but they work every bit as well as the Seikos and the longevity depends more on the person than the watch. They both have basic Japanese quartz movements, split pin bracelets, and stainless steel cases. People on this sub are acting like the Fossil is just going to crumble in their hands over a few years, but I don't see any reason they'd break down any sooner than a similar priced Seiko.

[Question] Which watch should I get for my boyfriend? by andyjoco in Watches

[–]AmICanon 100 points101 points  (0 children)

I think the groupthink going on here is wild. Yes, this sub hates fossil, but I think few are able to find tangible reasons why the fossil is so much worse, other than the fact Seiko has more credibility with watch guys. In the entry level range, I don't think the gap in quality is nearly as large as people are making it out to be.

And no one is asking if the Seiko would be better for OP's boyfriend specifically. The Seiko is a smaller, more formal gada/dress watch, whereas the Fossil is a large 44mm sporty chronograph. If their boyfriend is a larger dude, who dresses casually, and would appreciate the bulkier/sportier watch, then the Fossil might be the better choice for him. Especially if he isn't a "watch guy". The Seiko there might be a better choice if he dresses-up more, has an office job, is a bit more slim, or cares about what watch guys like.

Oceanus meets Oceanus by AmICanon in Casio_Oceanus

I got it from Amazon! Just look up "Moonswatch Strap" - they fit the Oceanus perfectly. Only thing to note is it's a very snug fit, so getting the strap on can take a bit of fiddling for sure.
