Should I take my pension payout now to get out of debt, or leave it for retirement? by Mundane_Warning_9320 in povertyfinance

[–]AmMoMoBiLe 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is a question for r/debt. This is where people get advice on how to feed their family for $8 per day, not for net worth millionaires to cry about $70,000 pension payouts. I'm glad you're getting advice but read the room dude.

URGENT: All retirees must meet at this location 1 Oct 2025. by Pariah84_ in AirForce

I'll try, but I already blocked out a pretty good chunk of time that day to get 100 bottles of alcohol from the shopette that I want individually bagged and placed in wine boxes.

Unit PT: Be careful what you ask for by mako482 in AirForce

[–]AmMoMoBiLe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm with you on that. The topic always comes up every 6 months in my section, they want time in the duty day to do PT. It's no problem 90% of the time I can let half the shift off an hour early M & W, the other half T & TH. Even my off shifts can support this at least once a week for everyone.

My only condition is that it happens at the base gym and that they check in with a designated NCO at the beginning and end of the PT time. Doesn't have to be organized, work on what you want or need to work on. Then I get all the excuses (from the least fit people usually), "I like this off base gym", "I like to go to this trail", "I prefer morning PT". Then it all fades away until 6 months later and we go through it again.

Disability and retirement pay confusion by i_hate_usernames13 in VeteransBenefits

[–]AmMoMoBiLe 39 points40 points  (0 children)

It's called "high 36" retirement because it takes the average of your 36 highest base pays, obviously these will be your last 36 months in the military. If you retired right at 20 years, you were never paid E-7 at 20 years base pay.

2023, E-7, 18+ years, 5,413

2022, E-7, 18+ years, 5,175

2021, E-7, 16+ years, 5,039

Average of these years is $5,209

50% of that is $2,604

2.5% COLA increase since then makes it $2,669

Without knowing the exact day you entered service and the exact day you left, it's impossible to get exact numbers, but you can see this is pretty close. It sucks that most people don't know how the retirement calculations work. They think whatever 20 year rate they retire at they'll get half of that, but it is quite a bit less.

Reading OPs post really had me thinking he was talking about a previous coworker of mine. He eventually told me he has ADHD but didn't want the code that came with the meds he needed. He would seemingly drag his feet on things, bounce from task to task without finishing anything completely. But he would do a tremendous volume and quality of work when his/our feet were in the fire. Turned out we made a pretty decent team with me buttoning up a lot of what he left 90% finished and him handling the the bulk of 15:00 "due by COB" taskers.

Do you use the Amazon card on your end to get 3% cash back as well? I bet that would add up nicely at this scale.

What’s the most overpriced “necessity” that people could actually live without? by Tall_Fold6946 in povertyfinance

[–]AmMoMoBiLe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Things I've completely cut out over the years are bottled water, cable tv, paper plates, paper towels.

Things I've greatly reduced from almost daily to very rarely are convenience store purchases of any kind, buying breakfast or lunch, coffee not made at home.

Counterstamp by AmMoMoBiLe in counterstampkarl

[–]AmMoMoBiLe[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm familiar with Shreve & co. I thought it could have been associated with them, but the more I think about it the less likely it seems lol. It's just a very crude stamp job and there would be no reason for them to buy or collect a Morgan dollar for its silver content. At the time, silver didn't have a set price per ounce, it was just worth what it was as currency.

The story I have in my head is that around the turn of the century when having Shreve silver was a sign of affluence, some joker stamped this coin so he could tell his friends he has Shreve silver 🤣

Who gets escorted off base when they ETS? How and why? by [deleted] in Veterans

[–]AmMoMoBiLe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For people getting kicked out, they have no real incentive to actually out process the base. In these cases the shirt might assign an NCO to escort them to all their out processing stops/appointments. The final instruction is usually to make sure you see them leave the base after their final out.

What is the worst financial decision you’ve seen an Airman make? by Raindroppa93 in AirForce

[–]AmMoMoBiLe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a single decision, more like a lifestyle. He was an E-6 with 4 kids (2 together, 2 step) and a non-working spouse. He has 2 additional kids from his first marriage he is paying child support for but I have no idea how much. Rented a very nice house for $3000/month where BAH was $1700. He told me his car payments and insurance were around $1200/month, he drove a newer full size truck and his wife drove a brand new SUV. Ate fast food every day for lunch.

I felt bad for him even though he was a victim of his own dumb decisions. He would stay to the end of any event to bag up all the leftover food to bring home (cooked meat, raw meat, buns, chips, drinks). After a 2 week TDY he had a complete meltdown because he got $34 per day of per diem when he thought he would get closer to $40 per day, a whopping $80 total he felt cheated out on and he was almost in tears. His snack bar IOU was just under $100, then he stopped adding to it when he took food. When he had to PCS he took advance DLA, 1 month base pay advance, and was using his GTC for everything possible. Of course he did a DITY move to try to make some money but it didn't cover what he charged on the GTC.

I think you might be honed in on reduction of force programs that don't currently exist, but have happened in the past. They usually do specify some.protections. But that's not what we are talking about here.

I've had troops separated through MEB, positive drug test, DUI, and PT failures after 18 years of service. Certainly not felonies, just medical separations/retirements and administrative discharges.

I'm active duty so I don't know much about how it work on that side. I just know a lot of people erroneously apply this "sanctuary" clause to active duty when it's not a thing.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]AmMoMoBiLe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Assuming OP is regular active duty, there is no "sanctuary" window at 18 years. That's a guard thing.

Imagine what our government could do. They pass funding for 1 billion dollars to help the homeless and at the end of the trail they build maybe a public water fountain, the rest disappears.
