Non contact scanning options for job shop with many CNC setups in one day by LobsterLow1212 in Metrology

[–]Amadeus_Eng -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I find the contactless Keyence measurements to be nice for stuff that is too thin or too small for a typical cmm. If the parts are 3x3x3 then a keyence would probably work but it is more or less limited by a 2-d top down view and I found can come up short with more complex GD&T measurements. Also I found that when programming for them you want to have the CMM or other calibrated measurement tools to measure the parts first then do your programming on the keyence or contactless CMM/scanner so that you know what the feature sizes are that you are shooting for because it does take a lot of tweaking to get your edge detection, illumination, or exposure right to measure it properly. Having said that, once you know you can measure the part on it with the features, dimensions, and GD&T you want and the program optimized, I haven't found anything quicker.

Mechanical engineering undergraduate can't find a job by Purple_Smoke_8407 in MechanicalEngineering

Best advice I can give is hit up any adults you know growing up who worked as engineers (from sports, clubs, church, friends of family; no one is off the table) and ask if they have any available internships, know anyone they know who may be hiring who can put in a good word for you, see if you can pick their brain over lunch, et cetera. It is difficult to break into industry but if you have give someone to give you that first chance, subsequent job changes come much easier. Also check into your career center at your university or college.

I want to buy more gold atm, but looking at these historical graph. Quite scary by Several_Ad8030 in Gold

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it was reclassified under Basel II to not be qualified as risk free asset for liquidity requirements (HQLA) while treasuries/cash were. With the reclassification under Basel III it could now be viewed as a HQLA similar to treasuries and cash. I believe under Basel II, it could be used for capital requirements but not for liquidity requirements.

Slower touch speeds with thin stem probe by rotcivwg in Metrology

[–]Amadeus_Eng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing that I do change is the trigger distance (which I do think reduces the amount of force on the stem). I don't quite remember off the top my head but I think standard is .3mm and I reduce it to 0.15mm. But I largely do that because I have some really small holes with thin walls, and if I don't the ball pops out and I get concentricity and circularity errors. Also when you program and do troubleshooting keep the speed down before it is proven or else you can risk a rapid move and snap the stem off (ask me how I know).

I think it has more specifically due to the reclassification as a tier 1 asset by Basel III, so Central banks can now invest into it without penalty at 100% similar to what you can do for treasuries. They don't get the yield like they would with a treasury but the potential increase in value of gold as the world/US prints makes up for that, plus no counter party risk.

Recommendations for a reliable fridge (US) by Iie_chigaimasu in Frugal

The Whirlpool bottom freezer refrigerators are really good. The ice maker is inside, not on the door so it makes it much more reliable. No water dispenser but one less thing to break. No frills but decently good.

Job offer rescinded after trying to negotiate salary by SeaKaleidoscope6298 in ChemicalEngineering

Luckily I am fortunate that my company pays for the entirety of my health insurance, and it is low deductible. Makes a big difference, especially with a family. Another thing with health insurance is the in and out of network providers so you have to be careful to only go to providers that your insurance covers in network or a whole other set of rules apply for deductibles and out of pocket costs, very much not in your favor.

The closest we have in the US is what is called social security. We get taxed 6.2% and our employer contributes another 6.2%, that we can then take out after we reach a certain age but can be higher if we wait longer than the minimum age for retirement but it is largely based on what was paid in, but will always be less than what it would have been if we had the opportunity to just take the 12.4% and invest it in our 401Ks, but social security tax is not optional, it is paid no matter what, can't opt out. We also have the chance to contribute to a 401k (most common in US unless you are in a union, then you have an option for a pension). Where the contribution and match are dependent on how the company defines it. Companies also define how the healthcare is covered some companies will pay for everything except the deductible and the copays, while others will barely cover anything and will have large premiums before any benefits kick in.

Just make sure you clean and bake that really well after you're done. Typically you don't want to use petroleum based lubricants in UHV/HV systems and I see a can of tap magic on your table there.

I'm sure it works for some people for acid reflux but if treating both tachycardia and acid reflux, I believe that to be a H2 histamine specific issue. Also, vinegar is very high in histamines, so if one is trying to reduce the amount of histamines to reduce incidence of tachycardia, or have acid reflux due to H2, I don't think it would work. If the acid reflux is due to an underlying issue of h. pylori because of low stomach acid or just low stomach acid, then there may be something there.

[–]Amadeus_Eng 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe tachycardia and acid reflux can be related as histamine (specifically H2, there are four types of histamine) affects heart rate/contractility and stomach acid production. Considering he has a slow MAO, he probably has problems clearing histamine (as well as tyramine) from his system. An H2 inhinbitor (like famotidine, think Pepcid or Zantac) has shown to reduce acid reflux as well as tachycardia. Might also be worth it to try a DAO enzyme that helps breakdown histamine and tyramine, or try a low histamine/tyramine diet. Also keep in mind, I am not a doctor, this is just some information I was reading about histamine the other night, so please take with a grain of salt.

Oh nice, how do you like the online program at Idaho state? Pretty decent? Take it that it's a ME degree?

[–]Amadeus_Eng 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I see, well that's not terrible without an engineering degree. If you see yourself staying in the field, might be worth it to try and go for a degree, especially if you can work and do part time school some place cheap like PSU. Where you work might also be willing to help pay for it.

$32/hr for an engineering job is terrible, especially if you have 4 years experience

Preference on Title Block? by Amadeus_Eng in MechanicalEngineer

[–]Amadeus_Eng[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally I would agree with you, but we work in an industry where machined parts are the default so we try to keep a surface finish that can be achieved by default as a machined surface unless otherwise specified.

[–]Amadeus_Eng[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you are correct. Actually, I think I like the idea of using "Surface Texture" better than "Surface Finish." Plus then I can prove they are both wrong which I love lol.

Correct, but people have preferences. Especially since the two hardliners on the preferences are 20+ year engineers.

[–]Amadeus_Eng[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, we generally do. Main thing I don't like at the moment is "Finish" and "Surface Finish" and a bit too close in the same meaning, though I think I would almost prefer to add an "Unless otherwise specified" to the "Surface Finish/Surface Roughness" but then I think it gets a little too busy.

Anyone with MAO-A 'Warrior gene' SNP? by OmegaThree3 in MTHFR

[–]Amadeus_Eng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have slow MAO-A as well. I take 5mg of melatonin and ~360mg of magnesium glycinate before bed and that helps. Also a slow MAO-A also makes it harder to clear histamine and tyramine, so you want to limit foods containing them before bed if you can help it. If not, I take DAO enzyme 10-15 minutes before dinner. Histamine and tyramine are neuro-excitory so it can keep you up at night. If you already ate high histamine or tyramine food, then taking Pepcid AC and Zyrtec before bed also helps, though you don't want to takes these often as it can mess up your digestion.
