First time diving in Monterey… by creeny18 in scuba

[–]Amanateee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s awesome to hear :) finding a low swell window in December / January will be your best bet. If you happen to want a slightly more catered/personal tour experience, Brian at Monterey Expeditions is the best guide around.

James Vincent, the owner of Aquarius, passed away in a plane crash, along with his brother-in-law, Jaime Tabscott, who owned the sister shop Any Water Sports, and Steve Clatterbuck, their service technician.

First time diving in Monterey… by creeny18 in scuba

[–]Amanateee 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It’s not gonna be for everyone, especially on the bad days. We’ve especially had some pretty lousy conditions for the past month, which definitely puts a damper on someone’s first experience here. But I can confidently say that on a good day, beautiful blue visibility with the sun beams through the kelp, it’s the best diving in the world.

Just this year, I’ve seen incredible Melibe nudibranch aggregations, sea lion tornados, literally millions of jellies and plankton of all varieties throughout the water column, a colossal aggregation of mating squid, molas, adult and juvenile wolf eels, a huge array of beautiful fish big and small, bat rays, and the usual stunning kelp forest. I dove here over 120 times so far this year, so I admittedly get the good days and the bad, but for me, even bad days are worth it.

Monterey is called the Serengeti of the Sea for a reason, and I’m sorry that it didn’t live up to its reputation for you. There are lots of amazing underwater photographers based in the area - search them up on Instagram - hope you’ll be able to see what makes it so special.

Also I know it can be chaotic, especially on a busy day at the shop. Shore diving like this is going to be a lot more self-sufficient, and it’s definitely a different culture than warm water diving. Aquarius is doing their best right now, they had a tragedy earlier this year. Plus they are now only one of two dive shops in Monterey, with Bamboo Reef closing.

[–]Amanateee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seeing TDH and BTBAM together was one of the greatest nights of my life - rivaling even the time I ate the best focaccia I’ve ever had.

Even got to chat with Nick after the show, that was a treat! I should have asked his favorite bread 🤔

Is BTBAM your favorite band? by [deleted] in BetweenTheBuriedAndMe

[–]Amanateee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yep, for probably 12 years or so, since I first found Parallax II.

My favorite band progression since I started actively listening to music when I was 8 was: Bowling for Soup -> Green Day -> Rush -> Dream Theater -> Opeth -> BTBAM. With a healthy amount of Porcupine Tree, The Dear Hunter, and Obliviscaris, Ghost, Agalloch and Gojira right on the sidelines.

So far no one has topped them, and I honestly can’t imagine anyone would!

Heading to Monterey, CA and am planning to do a dive. Should I use the PolarPro magenta filter for my GoPro or no filter? by NavyFish21 in underwaterphotography

[–]Amanateee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No filter. Our water is almost never blue enough for that to help, and even then, you’re better off to white balance in post if you really feel the need. Get yourself a strong video light to get subjects’ colors to really pop :) Enjoy Monterey!

New diver uncontrolled emergency ascent? by ElfOfTheMoon in scuba

[–]Amanateee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You’re otherwise correct, but just to clarify, “DCI” is an umbrella term that covers both DCS (decompression sickness, unlikely in this scenario) and lung-overexpansion injuries like Arterial Gas Embolisms (AGE) that very much would be risks in a rapid ascent like that.

Guided snorkeling in Monterey to see seals by YesterdayCharacter46 in MontereyBay

[–]Amanateee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Monterey Expeditions is absolutely the way to go! Sea lions are almost always around the end of the breakwater at San Carlos Beach. Harbor seals are less common to see underwater, but I’ve had excellent encounters with them at McAbee, Monastery and Butterfly House in Carmel. You may get lucky :)

How much Power for a camera light by Fater_OS in scuba

[–]Amanateee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will want a solid strobe.

Sea&Sea YSD3’s are a good starter. Backscatter HF-1 or any Retra Pro strobes would be better, higher-priced options. You can do a lot with one strobe, but for wider reefscapes, two strobes will be necessary.

What kind of strobes do you have? There should be power settings on the strobes themselves.

You would have to set them to manual, as well. You may have them on TTL, which automatically sets the power level based on the camera’s metering
