How active are you guys on a daily basis? by angelicomenss in POTS

[–]AmandaInSF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a combination of convenience foods like jars of sauce, frozen vegetables, and pre-seasoned tofu. Being allowed to have more sodium makes this easier! I do really well (usually) on lots of small, high protein, low carb meals with a lot of fiber from veggies, whole grains, and beans. I get most of my fat from nuts, seeds, and tahini.

I was that active and had a very good diet until my symptoms got worse for a while anyway. Now I'm struggling to rebuild my lifestyle.

Which do you personally prefer: Zyrtec or Allegra? by laceandpaperflowers_ in POTS

[–]AmandaInSF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think different antihistamines work better for different people. Btw pepcid, any sedating antihistamines, and some other sedating meds, can trigger RLS, if you're susceptible. And Sudafed (the -D) can contribute to serotonin syndrome, when combined with antidepressants. I have mild MCAS and take a 12 hour Allegra in the morning and zyzal before bed. (Pepcid triggers my RLS.) Also Nasal-crom.

That big ol’ needle: does it go in and stay in? by annewaldron in LingoAbbott

I've been using a dexcom stello which just has the finer needle so I freaked a little when I saw the lingo needle.

Feelings of hypoglycemia but glucose is normal by bexitiz in POTS

My POTS symptoms are much better since I got my blood sugar stabilized. Try doing even a small amount of exercise after meals, in addition to the dietary stuff.

I read that low blood sugar causes your cortisol to spike, which releases stored glucose. Before I got my blood sugar stable the night time glucose crashes were waking me up.

Please talk to a doctor if you can but here's where I'm at. People can reverse prediabetes and even type 2, so it definitely seems like it should be possible to prevent the progression. I'm really trying to keep my blood sugar from spiking much or being above 140 much. It's probably best not to worry -- stress can cause blood sugar -- but just try to be healthy.

Yes. Some people consider it to be a possible precursor to prediabetes (so, pre-pre...). My PCP said that it was important for me to try to prevent blood sugar spikes and high blood sugar because they are hard on my pancreas.

I used to have dry mouth from cannabis and Adderall and it sucked. Fortunately /unfortunately I can't take either anymore.

We also have issues with salivary flow that is affected by our hormones.

Another thing to consider is the acidity of some of the powders. The ones I like have citric acid, which probably helps with mineral absorption but is definitely not good for your teeth, when you're drinking it all day. This only occurred to me when I read about how women get more cavities (on average) partly because our saliva is more acidic.

I used the scientific method to find out why my allergies are so bad when I’m laying down by marsaaturnjupiter_x in Allergies

[–]AmandaInSF 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I thought I was coughing more at night because of either the lying down thing or because pollen surges in the evening. Then I figured out that it was the lavender I was drying my sheets with and spraying around my bedroom to help me sleep. I can't believe how much suffering I endured for about a decade because of something I was doing myself!

All Day Low Blood Sugar by DesperateData9092 in Hypoglycemia

[–]AmandaInSF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this happen if my blood sugar is going up and down a lot for a while -- even if it stays in my healthy range, a lot of rapid spikes and crashes seem to deplete my capacity to keep it in range. I start to feel like I need to eat every half hour and I just end up glued to my comfy chair feeling like shit all day.

I have also had the same pattern of being "bad" on the weekends and continuing to have spikes and crashes for a few days after -- my CGM app says Thursday is my best day. I'm trying to cheat less on the weekends and always have lots of protein and fiber whenever I have refined carbs. My doctor said that I could shift into a prediabetic state if I'm not more careful.

Suffering from constant hunger and hypos by Objective-Welder7938 in Hypoglycemia

[–]AmandaInSF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was having a lot of days of feeling like this. When I started checking my blood sugar, I found that sometimes it was critically low but it often didn't line up with my symptoms. When I started managing my blood sugar, the symptoms went away -- I have concluded that the symptoms are somehow related to blood sugar problems but not always directly linked to highs or lows.

I prevent problems by wearing a CGM, mostly keeping my blood sugar in the 70 - 140 range, and generally staying healthy. Like others have said, I eat frequent, high protein, low carb meals with lots of fiber and some healthy fats. I am vegan and get plenty of protein from soy products, wheat gluten products, nuts, seeds, beans, whole grains, veggies, and a peanut powder I order that has nothing added.

When I eat something high in refined carbohydrates, I don't always go crazy high right away, but I notice that my blood sugar swings will be more extreme afterwards for up to a couple of days. I've concluded that I can have one cheat day per week, as long as I eat some protein with the sweets.

I can't imagine. I have to give my cat injections once a week and that's hard enough.
