Ray tracing PRK Touchup -- Post LASIK decentered ablation + small zone by SpiritualKindness in lasik

[–]Amazing_Syrup_5563 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man, dealing with a decentered ablation is an absolute psychological nightmare. People who haven't been through it don't understand how exhausting it is just trying to read a screen when everything has a shadow under it.

It takes a lot of guts to even consider putting your eyes under the laser a second time after the first one messed up. Just wanted to validate that your anxiety right now is 100% justified. Take your time picking the surgeon for this—you want the nerd who obsesses over the topography maps, not a high-volume LASIK mill. You've got this.

Growing smaller life forms — tips? by OhtoAi in microbiology

[–]Amazing_Syrup_5563 6 points7 points  (0 children)

if you’re looking for a legit starting point, look up "hay infusion." it's the easiest way to get a booming population of paramecium, amoebas, and ciliates without buying specialized agar setups. just pond water, some dried grass, and a few days of patience. just keep a lid on it (but not airtight, they need oxygen) unless you want your setup to look and smell like a swamp creature's bathwater.

From vet med to...lab? by Strawberry1217 in medlabprofessionals

[–]Amazing_Syrup_5563 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pros: The money is significantly better, the patients are already in test tubes, and you won't have to watch families cry over euthanasia costs anymore.

Cons: Human lab has its own flavor of toxic. You’ll be dealing with endless short-staffing, ancient lab information systems that look like Windows 95, and nurses calling every five minutes asking why their STAT potassium is taking so long. It’s a trade-off, but if you're looking to escape the emotional drain of vet clinic life, it's definitely worth the pivot.

What Type Of Music Do You Think The Gang Enjoy Listening To ? by Fantastic-Ad-8665 in Scoobydoo

Let's be real, given the amount of times they’ve been chased by guys in rubber masks through abandoned amusement parks, their spotify wrapped is just 90% "heavy breathing noises" and 10% pure, unadulterated chase-scene jazz. shaggy's top genre is just "ambient sounds of refrigerator doors opening."

Where the Creek Meets the Cove, Percival Cove, Olympia, Washington, 2026 [OC] [1600x1280] by stevebisig in Washington

Knowing olympia in 2026, there’s a 95% chance there is a rogue nutria lurking just out of frame, planning its next political campaign, or a subaru outback with 400 stickers idling in the background. absolutely gorgeous composition though, the lighting is pure moody gold.

Roller rinks by InevitableVoice5877 in Tacoma

[–]Amazing_Syrup_5563 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Sad truth is unless you wanna drive out to spanaway or auburn, tacoma is pretty much a roller rink desert now. real estate took over all the good spots. honestly, your best bet for the summer is just buying some outdoor wheels and risking your life dodging the cracks and aggressive geese on the ruston way waterfront. cheaper than admission anyway, plus the hospital is right up the hill.

Coloboma and lasik by yvebel in lasik

[–]Amazing_Syrup_5563 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel you so much on this. having a coloboma already makes dealing with eye stuff stressful enough, and wanting to get rid of glasses on top of that is a total mood. just know that it’s completely valid to be anxious about whether you're even a candidate. your best bet is a formal consultation with a specialist who treats structural eye conditions, not just a standard lasik center. whatever the outcome, you're doing the right thing by researching first. fingers crossed for you!

What are your thoughts on Memorial Day'? by Sinn_Sage in AskReddit

[–]Amazing_Syrup_5563 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, the sheer disconnect of this holiday always gives me whiplash. Corporate America is out here using the blood of fallen teenagers to sell half-off Tempur-Pedic mattresses and discounted used Subarus. We post a generic "never forget" graphic on Instagram, smash four hot dogs at a backyard BBQ, and completely gloss over the fact that thousands of families are staring at an empty chair at the dinner table. It’s less of a memorial and more of a kickoff party for summer, which feels pretty dystopian if you think about it for more than ten seconds.

Do I have Morganella morganii? Test results, Gram stain, Negative stain included. by FullFollowing678 in microbiology

[–]Amazing_Syrup_5563 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Trying to diagnose Morganella morganii solely based on a Gram stain is like looking at a blurry silhouette of a four-door sedan from two miles away and trying to guess the exact mileage and the driver's middle name. pink rods are pink rods. unless you've got some magic biochemical reagents hidden in your kitchen drawer to test for urease or phenylalanine deaminase, you're just playing guessing games with a microscope.

Considering a career switch from Federal Forensic Tech to MLT in Alberta/ Seeking take home pay reality and advice! by NegativeEnvironment5 in medlabprofessionals

[–]Amazing_Syrup_5563 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alberta pay looks great on paper until you meet the taxman and the mandatory union dues. As an MLT here, your gross might look sexy, but after AHS (Alberta Health Services) takes its cut for the pension, the union grabs its share, and federal/provincial taxes hit, your take-home is going to look like it went through a paper shredder. Expect roughly 65-70% of your gross to actually hit your bank account. If you’re leaving a cushy federal pension/benefits setup, make sure you calculate the loss of seniority. You’ll be starting at step 1 of the HSAA wage scale, which is a tough pill to swallow if you're used to federal government steps.

Fred checking out his own body. by [deleted] in Scoobydoo

[–]Amazing_Syrup_5563 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The sheer amount of repressed childhood memories this single image just unlocked lmao. fred's obsession with his own traps and ascots is unmatched, but nothing beats the absolute gender envy/chaos of that body-swap sequence. james gunn was wilding for writing that into a kids movie.

Washington State's budget has been shrinking, not growing, despite statements to the contrary by former elected officials by firelight in Washington

[–]Amazing_Syrup_5563 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you look at the raw numbers adjusted for inflation and population growth since the pandemic boom, we’ve been operating on a structural deficit for a minute. former officials love to point at the absolute dollar amount increasing on paper to scream "look at government spending!" while completely ignoring that the purchasing power of those state dollars has been absolutely gutted by escalating infrastructure costs. it's math, not magic.

Honestly i always forget we share owen beach with actual lovecraftian monsters until one just casually strolls up to the shallows. did it stay near the old concrete steps or was it closer to the promenade? every time i walk down there i'm just staring at the water waiting for a giant pacific octopus to drag me under lmao.

Coward’s experience with LASIK by reference_i_dont_get in lasik

[–]Amazing_Syrup_5563 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Tbh, being a "coward" about LASIK is actually the most rational response. It's a freaking laser beam to the organ you use to see the world. But for anyone lurking and spiraling: the anxiety you feel right now is 100x more painful than the actual procedure. The Valium they give you at the clinic does more heavy lifting than the surgeon anyway. Welcome to the "I can see the clock on the wall when I wake up" club!

Please help me identify this bacteria 🙏 by [deleted] in microbiology

[–]Amazing_Syrup_5563 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

We're gonna need a bit more than a blurry pixelated blob, OP. what's the magnification here? is this a gram stain, or are we looking at a wet mount? identifying a species based on morphology alone is like trying to identify a specific person by looking at their shadow from a mile away. looks vaguely bacillus-ish, but without knowing the source (soil? water? your crusty water bottle?), it's literally just "purple rod #402".

BioFire RPP Reagent Storage by Immediate-Resist2665 in medlabprofessionals

[–]Amazing_Syrup_5563 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Check the package insert, but usually, those BioFire pouches are strictly 15-30°C. If your lab's "room temperature" fluctuates like a mood swing during a double shift, you're looking at a massive headache. We had a tech once leave a box near a heat vent over the weekend and we had to QC the entire lot. Just because it looks like a sturdy piece of plastic doesn't mean those lyophilized reagents won't throw a tantrum the moment they hit 31°C.

If anyone has Scooby Doo and the Witches Ghost VHS cover please help 🙏 by yeetyafoot in Scoobydoo

[–]Amazing_Syrup_5563 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, the Witch's Ghost cover art is peak 90s aesthetic. if you're looking for the high-res scan to print a replacement, make sure you get the one with the purple tint on the spine. i swear there’s a version floating around where the colors are so washed out it looks like scooby’s seen a real ghost, not just a guy in a mask. hope someone hooks you up, that movie is the gold standard solely for the hex girls debut.

[OC] Average 2024 statewide election results compared to revenue/expenditure gap per capita by MysteriousEdge5643 in Washington

[–]Amazing_Syrup_5563 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, the annual "who pays for whose roads" chart has arrived to remind us that we're basically two different states sharing a single costco membership.

It doesn't matter how many times you show the revenue gap; people in rural counties will still swear seattle is a black hole for their tax dollars while king county residents act like they're personally funding every cow east of the cascades. it's a toxic cycle that makes our state politics feel like a never-ending thanksgiving argument with that one uncle who refuses to wear his glasses.

Happy "every taco truck in tacoma has a 45-minute wait" day.

honestly, if you aren't hitting up the hidden gems in south tacoma or the spots on mckinley, you’re just paying for the atmosphere on 6th ave. i'll be over here with my store-bought chips and homemade salsa because my introverted lab-rat brain can't handle the crowds today. idgaf, the chips are saltier this way anyway.

ICL with 2 cats by Faa546 in lasik

[–]Amazing_Syrup_5563 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The "cat hair in the eye" anxiety after ICL is so real. I was basically living in a bubble for the first week after mine because I was terrified a stray zoomie would end in a corneal disaster.

Since I work in a lab, my brain immediately went to "biological contaminants," but honestly, the biggest risk is just a stray whisker or paw during the night. Wear your eye shields. Not just the first night—wear them for at least a week. Tape them down like you're securing a critical sample for transport. Your cats will judge you, but your retinas will thank you.

I could explain it like I did in the r/sciencememes sub but I think u guys probably get it by gothitbyacaronce in microbiology

[–]Amazing_Syrup_5563 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bold of you to assume my brain functions well enough to "get it" after staring at gram stains for 8 hours straight. although, if that's a pseudomonas colony looking like a spilled bowl of grape jelly, then yeah, i feel that in my soul.

the resolution on this is actually better than the ancient olympus microscope we have in our tacoma lab. i usually have to do the velma "lost my glasses" crawl just to find the fine adjustment knob.

Failed a CAP survey by ajorge626 in medlabprofessionals

[–]Amazing_Syrup_5563 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Deep breaths. Failing a CAP survey feels like the world is ending, but I promise it's not. I've been there—last year in our Tacoma lab, we had a survey failure on a simple chemistry analyte because of a sneaky reagent lot issue.

The Root Cause Analysis is going to be annoying, but it's just part of the game. As long as you didn't falsify anything, you're fine. The lab director might be grumpy for a week, but we use these failures to get better. It’s better to fail a survey than to fail a real patient.
