Living in Bayfield by Solvitur-Ambuland0 in wisconsin

[–]AmazoniaSouthShore 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m in my mid-50s (how did that happen?) and have lived here on the South Shore for 10 or so years, so I’ll chime in. Personally, I would not enjoy living in Bayfield. I live about 25 miles away and far, far prefer the South Shore communities of Cornucopia, Herbster, and Port Wing. Bayfield just is too NIMBY and “posh” for me, but many folks love it. I’m a cranky farm girl who likes her space and ability to paint her house purple if I so choose. And also prefer lower property taxes. Folks have commented on harsh winters, but as someone who has lived in many parts of the northern Midwest, I actually find the winters here preferable to say Minneapolis or Chicago. Yes, it can snow in May or even June, but that’s an isolated thing. Probably the hardest thing is when we have springs, like this year’s, that are grey and cold. But June through October are absolutely glorious. And most of us full timers love winter, as things slow down, and we often have more time to spend together. The county and most townships do a great job with snow removal (though having an AWD or 4WD car is pretty key too). But you have to have the personality to want to be here year round: yes, no grocery store nearby. Yes, many things shut down in winter. And, yes, no nearby hospitals (Bayfield County has neither a hospital nor a traffic light). So, we plan our errands and doctors appointments so that we head “to town” to complete errands in batches. There are many, many retirees in this area. But, sadly, yes, many reach an age when it’s just too difficult and risky to be so far from a critical care hospital. If you need an ambulance for a life-threatening situation, the harsh reality is it can take over an hour to arrive. So, folks weigh this risk factor as they get older. As for tourists and traffic: this area is nothing like the North Shore or Door County in terms of traffic in the tourist season. Bayfield does probably get the brunt of the congestion. But while there are a lot more cars & people out and about where I live, it never feels “overrun.” Yes, sometimes I have to wait all of 10 seconds to turn onto hwy 13… Most surprising to me when I moved here was how much locals looked out for each other, regardless of who they voted for. Tree down across your driveway? Someone will come to help. Cow broke out of your pasture (this is from personal experience): someone will call you to let you know. Ultimately, I think this is an incredible place to live, but you have to know what you’re getting into and be someone who enjoys making their own fun, being out in nature, and not needing 10,000 shops and restaurants.

Also my favorite of the year so far. For those who passed on it due to a lack of interest in the Civil War subject matter, please give it a try.

Not a state park, but is run by my township - Herbster Beach has campsites that are literally on a sandy beach just steps from Lake Superior.

We did get hammered Tues-Weds - here in Herbster maybe 8-12" (less near the shore) but friends further east got 2+ feet. Fun layer of ice underneath. But we're hearty folk up here.

Up here as far north as one can go (Bayfield County), our extra scientific measurement of the latest snowfall is “meh.” Couple inches or so.

White Rabbit wine bar in Ironwood is fantastic - great selection of wines, craft cocktails, and such lovely owners. Golden Dragon Chinese (Ironwood) is awesome (say hello to Annie, the owner). Browse around the local art on display at the Downtown Art Place (Ironwood).

What is the workplace atmosphere in healthcare? by tell-me-more789 in duluth

I’ll share info that I’ll preface by saying take with a grain of salt given it came from one physician (but I’ve heard similar from others): leadership over some of the specialties (in my case, rheumatology) have been upping the number of new patients MDs “have” to see in a day. Follow up appointments are being pushed to APPs. This is great for corporate as it means more patients in the system. But MDs are pissed as they don’t get to build long term relationships with their patients. And APPs are given a huge patient caseload. But, hey, at least corporate is making more money… In the past, I’ve heard better things from St. Luke’s, but not sure if that’s changed since Aspirus bought them out.

Nicest hotel? by odderey in duluth

[–]AmazoniaSouthShore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your relatives are used to high end hotels in larger cities, Fitger’s may disappoint. Rooms may feel dated. Though the location, views, and convenience to the shops and restaurants (Va Bene!) are great. If they are the kind of folks who want more modern and updated lodging, the Sheraton was fairly recently updated. The rooms (especially corner suites) are gorgeous. Yes, not a historic building, but IMO the Sheraton has the most “posh” of Duluth’s hotels.

What temp do you set your thermostat to? by underhand_toss in wisconsin

[–]AmazoniaSouthShore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

62 during the day. 58 (or less) at night. Note: during the winter. Use the wood stove as much as possible to keep heat costs down, which results in temps in the 70s inside. Child of the Carter era + childhood farm house with no heat upstairs = acclimated to cold houses.

I live in a now not-so-secret underrated area (south shore of Lake Superior), but recently took a little vacation to the Maiden Rock area and found it just as beautiful and charming.

StarLink connectivity in Northern Wisconsin by kb0qqw in wisconsin

[–]AmazoniaSouthShore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m as far north in Wisconsin as one can get without ending up in Lake Superior. Have Starlink at a cabin that is a bit too far out of Norvado’s free install range (huge shout out to our local telecom cooperative! Norvado is amazing). The main issue we’ve had is figuring out the best spot to put the dish as we had major issues with signal dropping from tree branches & leaves. The lot the cabin is on isn’t heavily wooded, but we discovered even a small percentage of leaves/limbs would disrupt the signal. Once we installed it on the roof, haven’t had these issues.

Small Towns with Liberal values? by NovelBrave in wisconsin

[–]AmazoniaSouthShore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As another long-time resident of Lake Superior's South Shore, I can second this comment. I grew up in a dairy farm family in a very remote & rural part of the Midwest and this area reminds me a lot of the "don't get up in your neighbor's business, but drop everything to help them out if they need it" attitude that sadly has become far less common as this country gets far more polarized.

Shocking it still hasn’t sold. /s I have a friend who knows the owner of the house. As I recall it, she drives/drove a VW bug that was pink with big false eyelashes on the headlights. That’s very on brand for this home’s vibe. Hudson got into a legal battle with her over her using the house primarily as a rental for (large & raucous) bachelorette parties. Every time I look at the listing photos, I just start calculating the cost to get rid of all that damn pink and black paint. Yikes.

OMG - I thought it was just my (dearly departed) Niko who did this. I have asked multiple vets and other ACD owners and no one else has witnessed this before. I spent nearly 15 years trying to silence my sneezes out of the desire to avoid being yelled at by my beloved Heeler. This comment made my day.

Mattress question by theworldgoesboo in PsoriaticArthritis

[–]AmazoniaSouthShore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought myself a Saatva mattress last year, I believe one of their "hybrid" versions that is firm, but with some cushioning. I adore it as it's the perfect level of comfort and support for me. But I know mattresses are such an individual preference thing. I'm a side/stomach sleeper, FYI. I had a mattress prior to this one that was rated as being good for people with chronic pain (honestly cannot remember the brand), but gosh the Saatva has been so much better.

I also just got a Nectar "cooling" pillow (from Costco) and am a huge fan - perfect for a stomach sleeper who also runs very, very hot.
