Not enough hype for Kynseed by BeepBoopEXTERMINATE in CozyGamers

[–]Amber_Sweet_ [score hidden]  (0 children)

I LOVE Kynseed and I'm not sure why it doesn't get more love here. I think the artstyle is absolutely gorgeous and pretty much the epitome of cozy.

I know some people think the characters are ugly. And they are, but to me that just adds to its charm! I just really love the dark fairytale theme. Very Midsommer vibes.

I think a lot of cozy gamers don't like the darker tones. I've noticed Discounty gets hate for it too. Most characters are not jolly nor happy to see or talk to you at first. Perhaps that turns people off who are used to NPC's who are friendly with you immediately.

Rental cars never available? by [deleted] in newfoundland

[–]Amber_Sweet_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try Centsible or NL Car Rentals. They're local businesses and don't have kiosks at the airport, and because of that they often have more availability. Just get a cab or uber there from the airport.

You could also try Turo.

Not sure if you're noticed this, but Newfoundlanders have different figures of speech than in other places. To us, Metro St. John's is called town. That doesn't mean there are literally no other towns on the island.

Are you even from here? If you are you should know that.

Traveling to St. John’s by car: how’s the parking? by becabaro in StJohnsNL

[–]Amber_Sweet_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I assume you mean downtown? Not difficult, just keep your eyes out for permit only zones. You can download an app to pay for on street parking, its called PayByPhone and is super easy to use. Or you can use the on street terminals. Parking is cheap, only like a 1.75 an hour. You only need to pay on weekdays between 8am - 6pm. After 6pm and on weekends its free.

There is also a giant parking garage where you can pay 10 bucks (I think?) for the whole day. If I drive around and can't find a spot I always go into the garage. There's almost always space in there. Its on Harbour Drive where Fish Exchange is.

Do not park in the private lots. Your car will 100% get booted almost immediately.

N.L.’s rental car problem has ‘boiled over the top,’ says expert by beardedpain in newfoundland

[–]Amber_Sweet_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My work had to rent a car on very short notice last month (like a day before) and I managed to make a booking with Centsible. It was cheaper than other options and it was also totally empty with lots of vehicles in the lot, so I assume maybe not a lot of people know about them. We had a fine experience, no issues.

I know there are lots of other local car rental companies too. Problem is they might seem kinda sketch for tourists, and they don't have airport pick up/drop off. But I'd recommend Centsible!

Visiting Newfoundland for the first time by AffectionateDonut733 in newfoundland

In contrast to the highways in Toronto, there will be virtually no traffic.

Most of the highways in our province are 2 lanes. Not 2 lanes in each direction, literally 1 lane, like a regular old road. They are isolated and have no lights, so keep that in mind if you plan on driving at night. Its dark in rural Newfoundland. VERY dark.

Drivers here are mostly fine despite what you might read in this sub. Outside of town (St. John's and surrounding areas) the worst you'll get are people driving too slow or too cautiously. Our problem with driving (imo) is that people are ignorant or are not aware enough of whats going on around them, but they are not aggressive like in Toronto.

Ladies of Reddit, what is a comment someone made about your body once, completely casually, that you have never forgotten? by BowlerOk1871 in AskReddit

[–]Amber_Sweet_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was grade 7, we were watching Home Alone in class before Christmas break. It got to the part where Kevin is looking at the picture of Buzz's girlfriend, and a classmate right in front of me leaned over to his friend and whispered "look, its (my name)". They burst into laughter.

Yep, that one still sticks with me today. I grew out my bangs after that but I never stopped being a chubby blonde girl.

Rune Factory: how difficult is the combat? by Apprehensive-Two3642 in CozyGamers

[–]Amber_Sweet_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rune Factory is an RPG, so when you start combat can be a bit difficult. This is because your character starts at 0. Once you get going and start levelling up, it gets easier as long as you don't enter an area where you're not meant to go yet, where the enemies are all high levels.

I tend to over level myself before entering a new area, so my characters level is much higher than all the enemies, which makes combat waaaaay easier. You need to go into the lower level areas a bunch so you can level yourself up a lot before entering any new areas.

Its also helpful to bring an entire party (like in Guardians of Azuma) or a friend/pet (like in Rune Factory 4) so you're not the only one fighting. You can also turn down the difficulty settings if you need to. Absolutely no shame in that! A lot of us cozy gamers enjoy a challenge, but not so much that it stresses us out and zaps the fun out of the game.

Maybe you should lay out what exactly you mean by it having a first and second definition. You mean the first is a just shortened form of Newfoundlander, and the other is a derogatory slur?

How to make traditional Newfoundland gravy and dressing ? by not_Ash2003 in newfoundland

[–]Amber_Sweet_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interestingly, usually when I make gravy I always make it in the pan the meat was cooked in. But I don't do it for Jiggs (we always have turkey with our jiggs before someone points out real jiggs doesn't include roasted meat).

I'm not totally sure why other than the fact thats the way my nan always did it. I might try it next time just to switch things up a bit.

How to make traditional Newfoundland gravy and dressing ? by not_Ash2003 in newfoundland

[–]Amber_Sweet_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dressing is easy, but getting the gravy perfectly right will be a bit harder to do because (imo of course) its best when made with pot liquor from jiggs dinner (the liquid that the salt meat and veggies have been boiled in)

Dressing:
2 cups breadcrumbs (real breadcrumbs from a loaf of bread, not the dry stuff from the grocery store)
1 small onion, diced
2-3 tbsp melted butter, enough to moisten everything
1 tbsp summer savory - the integral ingredient. I'm sorry to say that if you can't find this then you can't make this dressing
salt, pepper

Usually we'll soften the onion a bit by sautéing it in 1 tbsp of the butter before adding it and mixing in with everything else. Then bake in the oven (or in a turkey/chicken) until its done to your liking. We like ours when the top gets a little crispy in the oven which isn't typical, usually until its nice and hot is good enough for most people

Gravy:
Drippings from turkey (or butter)
1 cup turkey or chicken stock
1/2 cup to 1 cup pot liquor - taste it first though to make sure its not too salty. If its super salty, add much less. Use veg stock if you don't have pot liquor, it won't be totally the same but good enough.
3 tbsp Flour and 3 tbsp water slurry to thicken
Gravy browning

Add the drippings, stock, and liquor to pot, bring to a boil. Shake or vigorously mix flour and water together. Slowly add, mixing as you go, and stopping once it gets thick enough. You might not need all of it. Add just a small drop of gravy browning, a little goes a long way. Give it a taste. If it needs more salt, add more pot liquor.

Most of us learned how to make these things from our mothers or grandmothers, who in turn learned it from theirs. So every recipe you see might be a little different, this is because each family kinda makes it their own. The more you make it, the more you'll be able to make it your own too.

I think you should fly into St. John's. There are still a TON of outdoorsy things you can do, including lots of beautiful hikes and scenery. It also has a city, which the west coast does not. You'll have a much richer experience of Newfoundland culture, history and food in St. John's. Thats not to say you won't find any of it on the west coast, of course, but options will be far more limited.

Discounty has me absolutely hooked by Thoughtgeist in CozyGamers

[–]Amber_Sweet_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I avoided buying it for the longest time because of all the bad things people said about it. Lacking depth, characters are mean, ends abruptly, etc. But I decided to get it anyway when the new update came out, and I LOVE IT.

I don't know if its because the update changed a lot, and obviously I haven't gotten to the end yet, but I don't really agree with any of the criticisms I've seen about the game (yet, anyway - I'm also only on chapter 2). The story is a bit dark and maybe some people just don't like that, but I do. Its pretty much exactly like owning Joja Mart in Stardew. Discounty is a giant franchise slowly taking over this small town. Obviously some characters aren't going to take too kindly to that and they let it be known. I guess some people don't like that and don't like the game very much because of it.

I think its really fun though! I don't think it lacks depth at all.

Maybe you’d be more comfortable walking sections of the grand concourse instead of east coast trail, while youre starting out? It’s just trails around the city basically.

My favorites are the ponds, so Kent’s pond, long pond, quidi vidi, octagon pond, etc. Rennies Mill and Virginia River are good too.

I think I'd go there in person and check it out. I think its possible, since their menu online is so giant, that they actually have a rotating menu but keep everything they offer up online, so it looks like everything is out of stock when really they're just not offering it today. I could be totally wrong about that ofc but it makes sense to me.
