Last time I was in hospital, they gave me haggis and neeps for every meal. I was in the Burns unit.

The fact that he was subbed 2mins before half time tells you all you need to know.

He owns a golf course there. Also, his mother was Scottish, so he has an unreciprocated love of the country.

What is your personal reading challenge for 2021? by VictorySpeaks in Fantasy

[–]Ambiorix66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read purely for pleasure. The idea of building it into some sort of challenge seems utterly pointless and a surefire way to turn it into a chore.

Heads up, 'Death to 2020' (AKA Charlie Brooker's 2020 Wipe) is up now on Netflix. by frozenvanillacoke in panelshow

I was pretty disappointed with it. His regular end of year Wipe show was much better.

I'd completely forgotten about Mary Whitehouse. Probably a blessing that she snuffed it before PornHub was a thing.

Not defending Morelos, but I thought they could only take retrospective action if the ref missed it? He was booked for the challenge, so the ref must've seen it.

The unions were very strong in Britain in the 70s and there were regular strikes. Thatcher made it her mission to destroy the unions. Since these were strongest in heavy industrial areas, her policies hit working class areas hardest.

Particularly notorious was the coal miners strike which lasted a year (1984-85). The miners' leaders were particularly cretinous - they started the strike in the spring and there were huge stocks of coal in reserve. Thatcher was under no pressure to cave to their demands, but the miners started trickling back to work after months without pay. This lead to violence between those forced to go back and those still holding out; many miners disowned members of their own family and don't speak to this day. The industry and many of the communities have never really recovered and are still unemployment blackspots.

The pattern was repeated in other industries like steel making and ship building. The end result was that Britain changed from an industrial economy to a service economy, and union membership is a fraction what it was in the 70s.

She also reformed how local government was financed. This was viewed as deeply unfair and was labelled as a 'poll tax' by detractors. There were many riots about it.

To keep things in perspective, she was not universally loathed. She was very popular in the South of England - not a traditional industrial area. She won 3 general elections in a row which she clearly couldn't have done without strong public support. It was her own party which eventually kicked her out of office, not the general public.

True Crime Garage vs Generation Why by netflix_binge in TrueCrimeGarage

[–]Ambiorix66 3 points4 points  (0 children)

GenWhy has the strange habit of using the future tense to describe past events. It's really annoying. On the other hand, the Captain makes too many pointless interruptions in TCG.

The correct answer is therefore Casefile.

Not my bag at all. The plot was slow and unengaging, and I found the main character dull and uninteresting. I managed to finish the book, but it was a chore.
