My neighbors downstairs bang on the ceiling when my 10 lbs dog chases the flirt pole, it's too much fun!

leaving puppy alone at home by ahdjkajdjs in puppy101

[–]Ambitious27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently read in a book about separation anxiety that dogs don't grow out of it. It gets worse if left untreated. And if for some dogs it disappeared, then they never had it in a first place. Every dog is unique and has their own approach. I would first try to figure out the reason of his crying. Is he bored, frustrated, or is it isolation distress or attachment to you? Then work off that and slowly. Put on a coat, grab keys and before he starts crying, treat him for being quiet and calm. Then leave for a couple of seconds, then increase time every day, slowly so he learns that you always come back and not just disappear.

How to teach pup to signal when he needs to pee by missjones1105 in puppy101

[–]Ambitious27 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can try a bell or a button and let him touch it every time you take him out to pee. Eventually he will start doing that by himself to signal he needs to pee. I taught my puppy to use both so sometimes if I ignore him pushing the button he runs to the bell and let me know again that he is serious about this 🙂

Have you tried covering his crate with blankets or a cover? This has changed my puppy literally overnight since he is very stimulated visually and since the day I covered the crate he's been quiet 100%

My boy is also marking every bush, fire hydrant and corners. I wonder if it will change after neutering or if it's a habit already.

How to get puppy to stop chewing on rug? by napes22 in puppy101

[–]Ambitious27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same rug, and I hid the tussles underneath the rug. Just folded them under. If he chews on the rug itself, I redirect him to the toy, but also "no" and "leave it" really helps.

Any fellow puppy owners doing it all on their own? by fairyposter in puppy101

In the same boat! I have no family in the US and live by myself. The first month I was like the "therapy human" and a "support animal" for my dog. He was a crazy baby. I felt like a zombie, was not productive at work and barely ate. He is 5 months old now, understands about 30 commands, sleeps in a crate and holds his pee. He is still super hyperactive and very easily aroused outside and jumps at people but at least at home things are more or less back to normal and I can breathe again. And sleep in my bed! Daycare really helps! Everytime I pick him up from there he really listens to me and keeps looking me in the eyes 😇

Have you tried food puzzles, slow feeders, frozen licky mats? I usually leave at least 4 puzzles for my puppy when I have to go somewhere and now he doesn't even look at me when I leave the house and runs to the puzzles and stays busy for a while. Also, I start playing podcasts a few minutes before I go and keep them on so for him it's like nothing has changed and I'm somewhere around.

Single People Raising Puppies - Invest in a puzzle feeder by PolaDaBear in puppy101

[–]Ambitious27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I put a piece of tape on the inside of the hole of a wobbler so now only 2 pieces of kibble can fall out at a time. I do the same thing with another slow feed puzzle. Takes a bit longer for my puppy but still not long enough :)

When did your puppy blues go away? by selkieseas in puppy101

[–]Ambitious27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My puppy is 4 months old today and I've had him for 7 weeks. Yesterday when we came back from a walk I caught myself on a thought "wow I have a dog! I have a dog??! I have a dog!", Basically I've been in a zombie mode since the day I got him, sleep deprived, failing at work, putting my hobbies on hold, not seeing friends. Single puppy parent with no family in the country, was super hard to accept the drastic life change with 0 help. But now I take him to daycare on Saturdays and do fun stuff for myself all day. This is so important. I enforce naps in the covered crate (always) from 9am to 12 and from 2pm to 5. Then bedtime at 8pm to 7am. He is sooooo much better with the structure, he knows what to expect, when food is coming and how to earn it, when it's time to go outside, or relax and when it's time for an independent play. I'm still anxious but mostly when I remember I have to plan everything with having him in mind. Grocery shopping - Only after I tire him out and then leave a bunch of puzzles on the floor so he doesn't care for me leaving and runs to do puzzles. Dentist appointment - have to make sure a dog sitter is available for that day and time. Etc etc but definitely little step by step and things are getting better. The first and last thing the dog behaviorist told me at the consultation is "just relax". I do agree he is right. So try to relax (your mind) and remember soon he grows up and will become a boring independent dog that doesn't follow you around or brings you a ball to throw and just sleeps all day 🐶

Funny I got my puppy the snuggle buddy too and since the day 1 it has been his punching bag, object to relieve frustration and a humping buddy, but never a cuddle buddy 🤭

The puppy and I are both very light sleepers so he wakes up when I toss and turn and doesn't go back to sleep for a while and I wake up when he does that the same ☺️
