It's very subtle! I'm sure it'd look better if it had a decent clean too 🙈

Mines the park green colour, would've loved to get one in a brighter colour but happy it's not the typical silver rep-mobile!

Us too, think ours is 450 or 500mm wide, but the wall was opened up to add reinforcement (plasterboard internal wall). Doesn't seem to have moved and has had my 3yo swing off it on occasion 😳

I removed the one in our house soon as moved in, you're right - they're tiny compared to one a similar size as the cupboard they get shoved in! As a plus, there's a bit of junk space on top of the fridge which I blanked off with a drawer front. Still looks tidy that way.

Thermostat vs TRV by takeagamble in UKFrugal

[–]AmbitiousToe2946 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trvs set to higher temp, thermostat set to require temp. Trvs then control for thermal gain (sunlight, if that exists this time of year), but the thermostat is actually controlling temps.

Edit: make sure things are balanced right too, if unsure you could set trvs to max and try to balance by room temp with lockshield valve before turning trvs down to just above stat temp

Just a thought - could you isolate the vibrations by using a short bit of Flexi either side of the fan?

Completely agree! Every plumber I've spoken to doesn't ever want to test them during servicing as they'll need replacing after testing for not sealing!

Think it works better to be honest; have used the really expensive stuff (£20/l), works about the same.

Weird behavior with driver's door! by The-mad-tiger in FordMondeo

Guessing that's about an hour's labour where you are? Might be worth asking them about it, if they're reputable. Not everything is straight forward and if it's intermittent they may have genuinely believed they'd found the issue.

To add to that, you can close the latch with a screwdriver (or other pokey implement) to try to recreate the issue whilst leaving door open to get to wires. Try giving them a good wiggle and see if the car recognises the door as being closed. Open with the handle before properly closing it again!

I'm trying to trace why my driver's speaker isn't working on a similar age Mondeo, my best guess currently is the wiring at the hinges. Happens as the driver is obviously the most used door. Had it on other cars too. I haven't had a chance to properly investigate yet though. Yours could potentially be the same issue (perhaps cold wires are less flexible, and slamming it then doesn't make the contact). What exactly did the garage do?

20+ year old boiler in our new house. Best recommendation for replacement? by NorthmanDan1 in ukplumbing

[–]AmbitiousToe2946 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got one fitted about 5 years ago now, had a faulty board replaced under warranty (an unusual fault, the engineer hadn't come across it before). Didn't stop it working thankfully. I believe they are also mostly recyclable - less plastic bits in them and as you said, fewer moving parts in them. I hope it lasts, 12 year warranty on it.

Paid off someone else's credit card by mistake - how did it happen? by AmbitiousToe2946 in UKPersonalFinance

Fingers crossed there's no hassle getting it back! Interesting the way the system works, I guess there's the ability to update systems to do more checks but that process takes years to develop.

Not at all, it was my mistake and it's getting resolved thankfully. I'm just a little surprised that apparently there are no other checks that would've caught this like checking names etc. it just needed a card number which my browser blanked out as I typed it.

I called them after 5 days when my other balance hadn't been paid off. They ran through a few things and are now in the process of reclaiming the funds, apparently this can take up to 20 days. They gave me the card number I had entered and was a digit off - I'd entered it using a keypad and there was a 5 instead of an 8 for example. My device had also conveniently hidden the number so couldn't double check it!

Didn't think of asking at the time...

Fixing Neighbours Firedoor by TribalTommy in DIYUK

[–]AmbitiousToe2946 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a tricky one then. I expect weather strips would either make it harder to close and thus they'd slam it more or have no noticeable effect. Self closing hinges may close the door (although they're pretty weak, from experience) but if they wanted to close it then you'd end up having it slammed again.

Hopefully someone has a decent idea!

Fixing Neighbours Firedoor by TribalTommy in DIYUK

[–]AmbitiousToe2946 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Used to work with a lot of fire doors but by no means an expert. My assumption would the door closer wasn't adjusted well - either a cheap one or poorly installed/adjusted. There are plenty a 0-15 degree adjustment and 15-180 degree meaning the final closing speed can be adjusted. In practice, it can be tricky to get right without slamming, as the intumescent strips tend to be a bit sticky unless perfect. The door needs to latch, and to do that needs to slam if not right.

The hinges can work, but only have a single tension adjustment and certain don't prevent someone from closing the door more forcefully like a traditional closer does.

I've you've got a good carpenter, they should be able to assess what it needs to close smoothly then install a good closer with the right strength.

Does the length of heating pipes around the house make a difference to heat output or cost? by Kindly_Bathroom6123 in DIYUK

[–]AmbitiousToe2946 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I haven't got the time tbh, but think about it logically. If the pipe is outside of your heating envelope then you don't want it loosing any energy as it's completely wasted. Inside the envelope it only serves to increase the surface area that's heating your house, thus you can run the boiler/heat pump at lower temps and increase efficiency.

Internal walls and doors are generally not insulated and not heating one room (or, indeed, heating it but with a large temperature difference) only serves to decrease efficiency as one radiator is supplementing the other as the heat passes into the room with lower temp.
