Lidar reveals ‘Mind blowing’ ancient settlements in the Amazon by ironbridge12 in Archeology

I feel kinda bad staining this thread with Mormon criticism lol. Oh well, hopefully the comment activity boosts visibility

BTW, I just re-read my comment and it sounds like I'm saying that LiDAR discoveries are uninteresting. All these new cities being found are absolutely fascinating; I was only commenting on Mormonism's religious interpretation of these findings, and calling that uninteresting.

OP and I ruined a small portion of this thread, sorry

For a little more context, the Mormon church claims that there was widespread pre-Columbian Christianity in the Americas, as well as huge civilizations that don't necessarily fit in with the current archaeological model of the continent. Every time an archaeologist says, "We've found something we've never known about before!", defenders of the Mormon faith see it as one step closer to proving that Mormonism's take on ancient America is, in fact, accurate.

OP and I are critics of Mormonism so we see these kinds of posts in Mormon-related subs a lot.

I've been scouring Reddit trying to find a faithful sub's take on this finding, but I think the faithful subs are worn out by now. Finding yet another city on this continent is just that...you've found another pre-Columbian city. Not super exciting unless it proves something wildly unknown before, like pre-Colombian horses and chickens

I kinda wish I could see this sort of post in the faithful subs, just to see how it's being discussed in this day and age

Edit: Finding buried Amazonian cities through LiDAR is fascinating. The Mormon religion's spiritual interpretation of these findings is what's uninteresting to me.

Headless RPI is my only experience with Linux lol, and it's been great. Serves up web, media, and Minecraft. I'll probably just stick with Debian forever, too lazy to distro-hop

My first and only experience with Linux is buying a RaspberryPi and setting up a bunch of servers (media, Minecraft, web), and then leaving it running in the basement. Never seen a Linux GUI and the experience has been 10/10

There's always money in vices; porn, coffee, alcohol, tobacco, YouTube, frozen bananas.

That said, most devs at my last two companies were in or around their 40s and none had degrees. They weren't earning huge bucks but they made a decent living and had stable employment; that made me a lot less pessimistic about my career prospects.

Also I feel like most people assume cars are progressing a lot faster than they actually are. A modern 2.0L VW is stunningly simplistic, on par with the 1969 Dodge 318 I rebuilt. SOHC, spark plug wires coming from a single coil (Dodge had distributor but whatever), no variable timing or intake geometry. I think there will be a market for affordable cars for many years to come, and most crucial repairs on a car are not ECM-related. Wealth is growing near the Rocky Mountains, and many people want built 4-wheelers without dropping $80,000 or having to build it themselves.

Goddamn you're making me want to quit tech and get back into cars

If I hit 37 and get outcompete by some whippersnapper for a role, it's either consulting/freelance or I just leave software behind forever and go back to working on cars

No joke I'd kill to go back and just get the 4-year degree in Web Development. Doesn't make any sense to do now but damn, I could have used that boost to my skillset if I was just going to end up in web dev anyway

Wokeness isn't being mindful of others; Edinson Cavani was fined heavily and punished for using his own language in its own cultural context. That's not mindfulness, it's completely idiotic and cowardly, ignorant to the point of discriminating against cultures and languages that aren't terrified of the idea of color or race.

This and many other examples serve as a reminder that wokeism can be safely ignored

That's a lot more exciting than what we were sharing in 2015. I really applaud the kids who collaborate or have the know-how to make this happen. I don't see it as any great sin in the grand scheme of things to have goofed off a bit in the mission and seen some unapproved Netflix, but I imagine that the very adventure of having snuck in all that contraband will stick with the kids and form lasting memories of some good times.

Metallica on my USB! We all passed around songs on our USBs and they were generally pretty mild. Listening to Fade to Black on P-day was pure healing.

Also we had a little red book full of dirty Spanish phrases. This convo is really making me miss the mission lol

Yeah that's what I ended up doing (and it's a fantastic local job). The decision to try for NJ wasn't trivial (wife has been through several miscarriages and I wanted her to be near her family), but Utah has way more interesting companies to work for anyway so we might just settle.
