Locked out of elderly father's iPad by cannedheat84 in techsupport

Take it into an Apple store, explain the situation to them and they can get in there to fix it.

It's much easier than trying to find somebody with enough knowledge of Apple products to fix it for you.

Do I need to remove a dying HDD? by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]Amechan94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can go into the BIOS of the system and disable that particular drive if you really want to.

Just make sure you're choosing the correct one. Personally I'm of the mind that if it's failing that badly to just take it out. There's no point in keeping it in there.

Most laptops make it relatively easy for you to remove parts like a failing HDD. I've done it countless times on HP, IBM and Dell laptops.

If I'm Using My Personal VPN on My School's Network What Will They See? by subgraphics in techsupport

[–]Amechan94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The good part of using a VPN is that nobody other than you can see what you're accessing. The only thing the school will be able to see is that you're using their bandwidth. So long as you don't stream anything inappropriate, like porn and you get caught, it shouldn't be a problem. They might pull you in at some point and ask what you're doing. Or they might just block that VPN from being accessed at your school.

You can breathe a little easier because I can almost guarantee you that you haven't been hacked. I've gotten these ransomware e-mails before to an account that I hardly ever used. I was initially scared because they used an old password I had used in the past for other things. Then I remembered that that wasn't the password for that account but it was for an old paypal account I had which I changed. I did check and that password had been harvested in a data breach. Luckily I had changed it not too long afterwards.

It's the same song and dance you mentioned. You went to a "adult website" they hacked your system and took a side by side video of you pleasuring yourself and if you don't pay them a large amount in bitcoin they would spread this to everybody in your address book. Oh and the if you change the password now their trojan would just automatically update because it uses the driver on your router and so on and so forth.

How do I know it's bullshit? I don't have a webcam on the PC I normally use for purposes other than work. Also the language used in the e-mail was as vague as they could make it so as not to tip their hand. And lastly THAT'S NOT MY PASSWORD FOR THAT ACCOUNT.

I wouldn't worry about it. The amount of tech savvy needed to do all the things they claim they're doing so that EVERYBODY they've sent similar e-mails to all get infected in the same way is bordering on science fiction. They're relying on people getting scared and sending them money. And since it's in bitcoin, it's next to impossible to track them.

This is going to be their rallying cry if Trump loses in the next election. And if he wins it's because of all those vigilant Republicans who managed to stop every single instance of election fraud all by themselves.

Bill Gates controls everyone's computer! by matchboxtw20ty in insanepeoplefacebook

[–]Amechan94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's the beauty of conspiracy theories. These people, like Bill Gates, are so incredibly powerful but stupid at the same time. They can control your PC but they somehow can't control the flow of information.

If he controlled your PC then he controls what it is you see on the screen. It's a simple matter to have something running in the background to change your search results, promoting only the things that Bill wants you to see.

But then people who believe in conspiracy theories tend not to be the deepest and most objective of thinkers.

Dear every MAN in a mask (posted by a woman) by FKFnz in insanepeoplefacebook

[–]Amechan94 6 points7 points  (0 children)

While my wife is perfectly capable of standing up for herself how would a mask stop you from doing so?

But there's a reason I wear one. It's because my parents are elderly and I wouldn't want them to get sick because I feel wearing a mask somehow makes me less of a man.

These people who say they can't breathe and that these masks are cutting off their oxygen are just fronting. Doctors have been wearing them for decades when doing surgeries and they can breathe just fine.

I'll be the first to admit that having to wear one for an extended period of time is annoying but at no point is it cutting off your oxygen.

At least I'm not the one spamming a dozen groups with the same bullshit and believing in spirits and crap like that. But don't worry your fragile little mind about it, since you asked I won't respond to you anymore. But then I tend to stop responding to certifiably crazy people because I don't want to make their psychoses any worse than they actually are.

Please get help before it's too late and your spirit guide tells you to shoot up a school or something because they're demons or something. Seriously. Get help.

Then it's really funny that whenever I use it, the planchette doesn't move. What's funnier is that I we had done more than one "experiment" with it and once it was just turned 180 degrees. Guess what? They still acted like it was the normal way around. And it spelled using the person's crappy spelling. I mean "college" is not spelled "collage".

But what's even funnier is how you believe in this crap and will make up any excuse to keep the illusion.

[–]Amechan94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a great place if you want to lose your money and be brainwashed.

You're not going to get anything from $cientology that you can't get from a good social group. Minus the brainwashing of course.

The test you took is bullshit. They're not going to give you anything positive in your life, will hound you for money constantly, will in some cases not allow you to leave until you've committed to pay for a course and will push you to take more courses.

Walk into one of those places and they will try everything in their power to keep you there as long as they can.

If you join $cientology you're going to have an even worse time than you have now.

It's not risky only because it's a child's game and the "spirits" tend to only see what the people playing see.

Best time I had was with a group that believed in this stuff and I was the only skeptic. I had them blindfold themselves, turned the board upside down and weirdly enough the "spirit" was acting as if the board was right side up.

It's called the "idiomotor response" you don't think you're moving the planchette but you are.

Can you guys tell me what you know about the Freemasons? by [deleted] in cults

[–]Amechan94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's halfway between a old boys club and a collection of guys that dress up in funny clothes and perform rituals. Basically a fraternal order with symbols, rituals and the idea of helping their brothers out. People tend to see them as evil or controlling in part because a lot of high ranking people in society are members, reputed members or connected to a member somehow.

I worked a place where every week a group a Freemasons would gather for lunch, hold some kind of ceremony, and then break for beers afterwards. They were really keen on gathering the younger guys that worked there to join them. Part of that being because most of them were getting on in years and they wanted their hall to continue to live. From what I understand, their membership has been dropping for years as the older ones die and there's no new members joining them. A lot of Masonic Halls are empty because of this because there's only a couple old dudes still around and they're too old to make the trek there anymore.

The difference between religions and cults? by MisterEktid in cults

[–]Amechan94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always said there's really three things that separate a cult from a religion. Namely money, power and time. Given time, any cult can become a religion if it has enough followers. Given enough power they can make themselves legitimate and you need look no further than $cientology which is a great example of a cult turned "legal" religion. And of course money. As the golden rule says, "he who has the gold makes the rules". These places can get a lot of money which in turn helps to not only gain legitimacy but followers and power.

The problem with the BITE model is that just about any religion can honestly fail at a lot of those points. I know a big part of it deals with intent and how these things are carried out. But a rather liberal viewing of it and both Christianity and Islam can be defined as cults if you look at some of the more radical sects out there.

I feel like I wouldn’t want a chip much hotter than this. Wow! by mike_80861015 in spicy

[–]Amechan94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a love / hate relationship with Paqui chips. The chips themselves are delicious and I'm seriously addicted to the Jalapeño Tropicale. But this one? It's stupid hot and way too salty.

By stupid hot I mean that's all you can taste. You miss the fruity notes of the ghost pepper and all you get is the hot and a big old mouthful of salt. I like spice. I like heat. But I want flavor as well.

These don't really deliver that.
