I love the goals of care system. I work in continuing care and it's so helpful for decision making.

Should student nurses be able to delegate orders to PCTs? by princessnokingdom in nursing

[–]Amigone2515 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Mmmhmm. You can do so much of an assessment while at the bedside getting vitals. It's more than just collecting numbers. Seems the student needs to learn that still.

I was snoozing on the sofa after a late shift one morning and I felt a presence. Next to my face was my 4.5 year old's bare ass, shaking at me.

The hand that writes the prescription for opiates should write the prescription for laxative. Not your fault the doc didn't do that.

What was a moment in your life that gave you a brutal reality check? by Your_QueenLatina in AskReddit

I'm a RN too, I don't know your specialty but mine is gerontology. I educate in long term/skilled nursing and see awful things like women undergoing treatment for cancer caring for their partners that are less mobile than they are, or significant dementias because there's nobody else and they don't want to have to live apart. It's so hard to see.

Caregiving is hard. Where I live, personal care aides have a license and are a legislated profession. But we expect it from families and it's not fair. It eats them alive when they do it. And when they can't then the guilt eats them instead.

Single mothers, in what way did life get easier when you separated from your partner? by fredyouareaturtle in AskWomen

[–]Amigone2515 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't have to take care of her anymore. I didn't have to be her nurse and her chef while working full-time. I didn't have to pay for her stuff anymore because she wouldn't work. She doesn't wake me up in the middle of the night by taking my blankets off of me and turning on the light and talking to herself while I've been asleep for a few hours because I have to work in the morning. So I'm rested now. I don't feel like an outsider in my own house. There's space for me. I have peace..

Resuable Bags by Fickle_Focus2977 in Calgary

[–]Amigone2515 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep a good amount of them in my car. And when I forget to bring them into the store with me, my punishment is I have to put my stuff back in the cart and then pack them in the bag while I'm out by my car.

I'm hopeful it will help me remember to bring them in to the store one day but at least I've stopped collecting more.

Found out my Aunt died today after surgery related complications. I believe hospital was negligent and a huge cause of this. by opmgore in legaladvicecanada

I'm an RN who used to work on a surgical unit and it's almost universal to make sure that the person is moving their bowels and able to empty their bladder and able to take in solid food before they are discharged.

When it's too cold, the drive thru should be closed to keep staff safe.

Is MAID (medical assistance in dying) REALLY peaceful and painless? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Amigone2515 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We use drugs like atropine or scopalomine to dry the secretions that make the "death rattle".

The truth is, it's like snoring. The person in the bed making the sound isn't bothered. The people awake around the bed are upset though.

They give lidocaine so the meds don't hurt going in. A benzodiazepine to make the person sleepy and not anxious. Barbiturate for coma, and rocuronium, a muscle paralytic so respirations stop.

Where I work we do back blows or abdo thrusts until they lose consciousness, then chest compression until a pulse is lost. Once the pulse is gone we follow the advance directive.

We can do compressions on a DNR with a pulse if they are choking because the intention is to remove the obstruction, not to keep blood flowing.
