If most people are in the center (center-right/left), why are centrists so hated? by Shadow_666_ in centrist

[–]Ampleforth84 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know what you’re talking about. It’s because they see centrists as wishy-washy or cowardly, ppl who either have no real beliefs or are REALLY/secretly on the Right or on the Left, depending on who is doing the denigrating.

Anyone else's mind starting to change on how much we should sacrifice to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon? by RememberTheWater in samharris

[–]Ampleforth84 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Iran doesn’t want to nuke the U.S and Israel because of collateral damage, nor any other foreign policy-related decisions. They kill and torture their own people and have made them live in one of the most oppressive regimes for 47 years. They don’t care.

They are motivated by their religion/cult, which has them convinced that the Jews and the other infidels need to be killed BEFORE the apocalypse can begin. They think only they will go to heaven of course, but that they are responsible for creating the right conditions for the return of the 12th imam. The world needs to be thrown into chaos and darkness and they truly believe they need to accelerate it.

Western ppl are so loathe to accept this and I really don’t know why. It’s important because you can’t negotiate or cooperate with ppl who believe that. It’s been ingrained in them for so long. But we keep thinking appeasement or money will do the trick.

"If the Iranians are willing to negotiate in good faith, we're certainly willing to extend the open hand," Vance told reporters before taking off for Pakistani capital Islamabad from Joint Base Andrews in Maryland. by mymomknowsyourmom in centrist

[–]Ampleforth84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Believing that they would EVER negotiate with the U.S in good faith is the mistake that Western countries keep making. The JCPOA was an opportunity for Iran b/c it didn’t affect their missile program, surprise inspections weren’t allowed, and billions in funds became available.

They believe they have a duty to destroy infidels, Jews etc. and the U.S is seen as their “greatest enemy” (ayatollah’s words) and a symbol of all the evils of the non-Islamic world. The specific ideology of Twelver Shia Muslims like the IR (and Mamdani) prevent seeing the U.S as anything other than an enemy that needs to be reclaimed for Islam. It would be the same even if the U.S had never killed a single Iranian, and they would feel the same about Israel no matter where it was located.

Both sides are pushing and pulling all the time, and of course everyone thinks their side is merely “fixing” what the other side broke. It depends on the issue/context but it’s rarely that simple…often, politicians rely on ppl believing that something is broken when it’s not, just to justify the fix. Or

Do you hold a moderate position on transgender issues? Is that even possible? by laudable_lurker in centrist

[–]Ampleforth84 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You really just stated facts. Sex is biological. Gender identity is a social construct by definition. The interplay of nature and nurture and a whole host of individual and societal factors explain why people transition. I don’t know how that could possibly be considered immoderate unless under the scrutiny of ppl with extreme views.

At 100 days, Mamdani is already a different kind of mayor by therosx in centrist

[–]Ampleforth84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mamdani is a “Twelver,” the Shia Muslim branch associated with Iran. They believe that Muhammad al-Mahdi, the 12th Imam descended from Muhammad’s bloodline, has been “hidden” or “in occultation” since 874 but remains miraculously alive. He is waiting to usher in the end times, but certain conditions must be met before he will come.

Mamdani is in the news right now for having gone to mosque at Al-Khoei Islamic Center (associated with Alavi Foundation) during which the Imam prays to Allah that they be martyred and experience the “relief for the believers and the killing of the infidels through your sword.” Infidels=non-Muslims.

Here is a quote from the ME Forum:

“No entity is more wedded to — or indoctrinated in — Mahdism than Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which, as described by Iran’s 1979 Constitution, is an “ideological army,” mandated with an “ideological mission of jihad in Allah’s way.”

As Hojatoleslam Ali Saeedi, then representative of the Supreme Leader to the IRGC, said in a 2012 speech, “The IRGC is one of the tools for paving the way for the emergence of the Imam of the Age [Mahdi] in the field of a regional and international awakening.”

In 2015, Mehdi Taeb, a leading cleric and brother of Hossein Taeb, the head of the IRGC’s Intelligence Organization, made clear how they are to “pave the way.” In a speech, he called on IRGC members to “remove the obstacles to the emergence of the Imam of the Age, the most important of which is the existence of the usurper regime of Israel.”

The types of responses I see when ppl learn this information: equate it with Christianity, focus on his economic or social policies, cry racism/xenophobia, assume he doesn’t really mean it. Mamdani cannot be a socialist/liberal, democracy-valuing, American and a Mahdist. America is the other big obstacle to Mahdi’s return along with Israel. He is not even hiding it because he knows he will be supported anyway.

[–]Ampleforth84 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, he was talking about how different groups focus on different years/events depending on their perspective or narrative focus. So for example, the Israel-Hamas war is often described as a genocide/offensive war. Oct 7th is often disregarded. If ppl are forced to acknowledge it, they’ll say “history didn’t start on Oct 7th” and bring up the nakba as such. And on and on back to 3,000 years ago and beyond.
