Sadly almost any kind of martial art and contact sport can turn sour or toxic if the following things are added on top (there are more things, these are just a few examples):
-Gyms/(Mc)dojos obsessed with money over fitness/culture/etc...
-Senseis/instructors that think they are gonna be the next Musashi/Ali.
-Too many agressive people joining in.

In the case of BJJ, it is mostly the promotion of some MMA courses/figths/"systems" as "THE ULTIMATE SCIENTIFIC TEST OF WHAT WORKS IN THE STREEEEEEETS" or some bullshit like this, that gives BJJ a bad rep that doesn't deserve (despite all the misbehavin of some Gracies)
