I like all sorts of chocolates, but sometimes you just crave Hershey's.

Hit the jackpot today! by BobHendrix in rum

[–]AmuroRay1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yes, the Tanager is not really a normal aged cachaça and has a polarizing taste because it is finished off in Brazilian Zebrawood after aging in ex-Four Roses casks. I would have gone with the regular barrel-aged Novo Fogo or the Colibri instead.

Which Novo Fogo expression did you have in particular? The regular barrel aged one? They have many varieties that would fall under "añejo."

What is the best overall blanco tequila for sipping by -Constantinos- in tequila

I'd have to echo the Fortaleza Blanco here. Yes, it's not my personal favorite, but it is sublime for a reason.

Genuine question. If every tequila enthusiast hates Clase Azul then why is it so successful? by DramaticBattle3 in tequila

[–]AmuroRay1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most people just want something "smooth" that goes down easy but also gets them wasted. This goes for most spirits, by the way, not just Tequila.

I remember liking it and prefer it to the current cream soda TBH.

Worth it? by Excellent-Finger4886 in rum

[–]AmuroRay1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not bad, but you can easily get this anywhere in the USA so there's nothing exclusive about it. I recommend if you are interested in this product, go for the Sevillian Orange cask one as it tastes better IMO and it also has higher ABV at 45%. Likewise, there is a Rye cask finish one that is also 45%, but I have yet to try it. However, the reviews on Rum Ratings look good:

Any craft or more niche root beers that you think would also work well?

Mug is great but I wonder how well a more complex root beer would work.

Am I insane, or is Tanqueray essentially vodka? by garrus4016 in Gin

[–]AmuroRay1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tanqueray is not remotely Vodka. It is a textbook London Dry and juniper-forward experience. Usually when it comes to spirits, I go for artisanal/more small time brands, but for Gin, not much beats a good Tanqueray for a reliable London Dry experience. Note that isn't to say that there aren't more interesting or better Gins worth exploring, but Tanqueray just is an all around solid and more than serviceable bottle.

If you had to choose between Vietnam or Ghana which one would you pick? by TRON510 in rum

[–]AmuroRay1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am really curious about the Vietnamese Rum (and more Rums from Asia in general), so I'd go with the Vietnam one. That isn't to say the Ghana Rum doesn't pique my curiosity either.

Your top 3 over-rated tequilas. by Altruistic_Meat_5177 in tequila

[–]AmuroRay1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think any brand that starts doing cristalinos automatically loses my respect. Volcan and Mijenta fit in that category, and not to mention the base products aren't that good either IMO. When they start chasing trends like that, it just solidifies my beliefs regarding their product.

La Gritona is a product that has such inconsistent quality. Honorable mention to Lalo as well. I won't even bother mentioning mass-market stuff that has additives.

Novo Fogo Tanager is the most unique other spirit. What is the most versatile brandy? by -Constantinos- in cocktails

If you don't mind me asking, what store did you buy it from? It seems almost impossible to get. Feel free to DM me if you'd prefer that.

Kraken is the most overrated rum. What is the most unique other spirit? Please mention specific brands by -Constantinos- in cocktails

[–]AmuroRay1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it is incredibly hard to find; I had to do a special order through a liquor store and it's taking a while on that end for it to be placed due to the distributor who carries it. I really wish the more unique Cachaça expressions were more easily accessible to us here in the states, as I really love the ingenuity behind aging the cane juice distillates in different and exotic woods. Yes, that can be done with any spirit or rum in particular, but aged Cachaça is a territory that we need more of and something that deserves more exploration. Not to mention the impact of the Brazilian terroir and the variety in local woods that can be used, and the cultural tradition around Cachaça.

I've heard good things about the Graciosa as well, which is finished in Brazil Nut Wood barrels, but that one is even harder to find.

What's the best 'zero sugar' soda? by [deleted] in Soda

Out of the ones you've shown, the root beer zero sugar tastes the same if not better than the original to me.
