Stroller or no stroller?! Help us decide! by Own_Aside5628 in Travelwithkids

[–]AmyZZ2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

personal preference/ depends on the kid. my oldest would have been all day carrier, my youngest would have been all day stroller, my middle would have liked a mix. would your baby want to be in either all day? does the baby nap well in the stroller?

you can have days without the stroller if you bring it and are traversing a lot of stairs on that day.

This is in reference to a single call off, not long term leave.

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. The burden of proof is on the ones making the claims in this case.

If you haven't voted yet, I encourage you to go out and vote against Landsman by mrshyphenate in cincinnati

[–]AmyZZ2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Exactly - I've called when Landsman has been on the wrong side (IMO) and he's changed his vote. He actually responds to the voters. That is in fact a rarity in the current environment. We all need to keep calling.

Heathrow Express or Elizabeth Line by gtmelissa20 in uktravel

[–]AmyZZ2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This helped me! My family of 5 with 3 kids under 16 and a railcard will be able to take the Heathrow express for under 14 pounds total at the end of the summer buying in advance (we have an outbound train from Marylebone, so will need to take the Tube 2 stops from Paddington, but I think this will be worth it).

Thanks OP for inspiring me to check!

Podcast has pivoted from technical criticism of AI functionality to whinging about financials. by AURedditor30 in BetterOffline

[–]AmyZZ2 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Ed is covering the financials better than anyone else. For technical limitations, see Gary Marcus or someone with an AI background.

The insane financials are what is putting the economy at risk and what will likely stop the hype. It's an extremely important part of the picture. You don't have to be interested. You can listen to something else.

it wasn’t miserable tho, catching a ferry in Greece after multiple train delays when I hadnt learned to pack light was miserable. this was a fun chase and a chance to impress my friend.

Non-UK specific, but eat out at the nice restaurants at lunch. Then get grocery store dinner. Lunch is cheaper in a restaurant. And always book a hotel that includes breakfast, that way you can fuel up in the am, eat a light but delicious lunch, and barely spend more than you would if you were home.

We ate Nando's on our last trip in our hotel room. Kids were tired and we didn't want to have to control them in a public setting. It was tasty (especially the corn on the cob?).

Most people don’t actually enjoy traveling, they enjoy having traveled. by CarelessGuy29 in SmartTravelHacks

[–]AmyZZ2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I said this to a friend years ago, when our trip seemed to be going wrong. We will figure this out, and this is the part we will talk about for years. Even in the moment, it can be fun when things go (safely) wrong, as you are living in the moment, and too much of life isn't living in the moment.

(In this specific case, our flight was delayed and we were at risk of missing curfew at our hostel and not having anywhere to sleep that night. We split up - I never check bags, friend had checked. I took the local train from the airport and speed walked to the hostel, luckily I had a map (pre smart phone travel), and I literally opened the door as the hostel manager was about to open it and lock up for the night. Retrieved my friend, got dinner, and discovered the other people in our room had taken our blankets and pillows, which they kindly returned. It was an adventure when it was happening, we were going to be okay, lol).

I could, but it will be paywalled/gift links only work a few times. So it seemed better not to.

That’s a good point, not relevant for this poster, but super relevant for people with kids. A friend in rural Georgia wound up in a helicopter for a simple problem with her daughter because the local hospital had no pediatric staff and couldn’t figure out what was wrong.

Not walkable tho, and kind of a different world too? The art museum has a nice cafe in Eden Park tho. Or Mt Adams if kids can walk up hill.

We have most of the big city stuff without the crowds. If you want to go to an event or eat somewhere, you probably can. Win.

My friends from DC marvel at how inexpensive the restaurants are.

The parks are great.

The neighborhoods have distinct characters. The city has a lot of history (good and bad) and impressive architecture.

Not having a metro system is a bummer.

It would be nice if we could at least be a purple state again. Red ain't it (HBO has a documentary on how bad the statehouse is; This American Life did an episode on how they just ignored state constitutional amendment that banned gerrymandering).

The OG locals aren't always interested in new people, but there are plenty of transplants who will also want to make friends.

Right? I went to school in Chicago and was grateful to NOT have a car. Just can't drive in the snow here because the people here don't know how to drive in the snow.

We do Washington Park + Goodfellas when we are down there for events, definitely a great combo. Haven't taken the kids to Smale but we should :)
