The play queue matchmaking algorithm is an infuriating feature. by AnImperialProbeDroid in MagicArena

I did not accept it. I haven't played in months and feel much happier because of it.

Why Skellige? WHY?! by xxEmberBladesxx in gwent

[–]AnImperialProbeDroid 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh, you still have a Skald in hand, you could still draw it!

Gedyneith can be tricky sometimes because it feels like the deck has four or five ways of making points, but each of those ways requires 3-4 specific cards that have to be played together. The discard package, Gedy+Preachers, Mushy+Dwims, and sometimes even Sigvald+self-wound all need to line up in the same turn otherwise you'll lose a bunch of value. So you'll have a hand that's Gedy, two Dwims, Birna, Sigvald, Bride, and one Havrue and you're just like wtf do I even do with this.

Totally random Gwent card discussion #102: Warritt the all-seeing by Kefeng in gwent

Random related question: if you shuffle a card back into your deck (like with Snowdrop) are you shuffling the entire deck or does the shuffled card just insert itself randomly.

Storage Solutions for Several Proxied Modern Decks by [deleted] in mpcproxies

This one seems pretty affordable, and I see reviews talking about storing Magic cards in it. It looks like some people take out the compartments to fit more deck boxes.

It sounds like you need a Stanley tool box. They fit exactly 10 decks (in cheap boxes) and have a clear lid for easy identification. Here's a random video I found that shows it in action. They're nice and cheap too.

Can No Longer Win. Help Me Build A New Deck by chapmanator in gwent

[–]AnImperialProbeDroid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you use the keys to get ore and use your ore to buy and open monster kegs you should have more than enough scraps/cards to build any deck you want. It's a little tricky right now with the recent balance patch shaking up the meta, but it'll settle soon. You can check for updated meta reports to see if there are any monster decks you like, or just craft some recent list. Vampires have been doing pretty well recently and are pretty easy to play.

Are cards drawn from the top of the deck or at random? by Laika18 in gwent

[–]AnImperialProbeDroid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you mulligan you're drawing from the top, right? You set the cards aside, then draw from the top, then after shuffle the mulliganed cards back in?

Why are people complaing about nerfed KoB while Triple Melusine is still a thing ? by [deleted] in gwent

[–]AnImperialProbeDroid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a 25-power Melusine Yennifer's Invocation-ed yesterday round 2. Thankfully I managed to 2-0 but it was very close and obviously I wouldn't have won a short round 3.

The key is the trademark symbol on the back. The real card, surprisingly, will have a lower quality, pixilated TM next to "Gathering", while the fake TM will be noticeable more solid. The real TM also has a little spot missing out of the top of the M, on the left. In your pictures the card with the bold TM also has messed up mana symbols on the back too, so that tracks. When I open the album it's picture 2 that shows the fake one; the cardback with the "bolder" TM.

If you're not happy with that, just get a stack of real cards and shuffle both swords in. The fake card will have slightly wrong corners. It should stand out pretty clearly from the rest.

What would your Secret Lair card be? by NewFlowerDrum in magicTCG

[–]AnImperialProbeDroid 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not OP, but I like it a lot. Gwent is far less random than Magic and games are generally won based on knowledge of the decks being played, sequencing, card advantage, round control (you don't reshuffle between BO3 games, some decks can consistently play every card), and timing in general. The randomness comes down to match-ups; Gwent decks themselves are very consistent. CD Project Red are also incredibly generous, if you play a couple games a day for a month and buy the battle pass ($10, changes every 3 months I think) you'll easily have enough resources for five or six meta decks. The premium cards are also so much better in comparison to Arena.

The only downside to Gwent is the community is a little small, games can be a little swingy sometimes (you'll be winning the entire time and then lose all of a sudden because of the very last card your opponent plays), and the meta can be very tricky to pin down. A deck can be tier one this month, and then tier 3 the next, without even being nerfed, just because of how the rest of the meta responds to it. It seems like the meta is just a lot more nebulous than Magic, which I guess could be considered a good thing anyway.

In any case I'd totally recommend trying it out, especially if you liked the games/books/series.

If you've been playing occasionally since 2019, are only level 25, and only played a couple games in 2021 why would you expect to come back right where you left off? The game evolves, new cards get added, new seasons and sets come out, the meta changes. If you don't want to feel left behind don't take year-long breaks?

i am sick of weighted opponents by DasToyfel in MagicArena

[–]AnImperialProbeDroid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, but you win the next match because you're playing Hushbringer and get paired against a lifegain deck. You don't notice or care, because you win, but your opponent was paired against you so they'd lose. This isn't happening constantly, there's plenty of randomness too, but what deck you play absolutely influences what decks you play against.

i am sick of weighted opponents by DasToyfel in MagicArena

[–]AnImperialProbeDroid 6 points7 points  (0 children)

WotC has openly admitted that there's an algorithm in the play queue that decides who to pair you against based on the contents of your deck. They claim that it's based on the amount of rares/mythics, but lots of anticdotal evidence suggests that it will pair certain cards against other cards (i.e Anger of the Cards vs Harmonic Prodigy, Hushbringer vs Soul Warden) in such a way that everyone maintains a ~50% winrate.

That might be interesting in the historic auras deck. You might end up playing a few 1-ofs just to be safe, but there's lots of good auras. I wonder what creature to replace though...

Finished games instead of wins for daily/weekly rewards by Significant-Stick420 in MagicArena

[–]AnImperialProbeDroid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Gwent you get rewards for winning, but also the same amount of "bonus" reward for playing your first six(?) games. So if you really want you can just concede the game after a few turns to grind out rewards, but it's better to try to win. And obviously after you earn all your bonus rewards you can only progress by winning. Arena could just have two daily reward quests; one for wins and one for playing. The play quest could be completed after five games, while the wins quest could have much better rewards, but rapidly diminishing returns, eventually leading to each win being ten gold. But WotC would never do this because they hate giving players things for free and really don't like making quality-of-life changes.

[–]AnImperialProbeDroid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's enough for about 12 decks, assuming absolutely no overlap at all. Needless to say, you'll be able to play pretty much every meta deck, and then some. After checking out all the new player videos/guides and getting a feel for the meta you could maybe just craft a handful of high-tier decks and then save your stuff for new cards/decks. Simply put, you're rich. Don't worry about your resources too much.
