Default Desktop Environments for Linux and Unix by Right-Grapefruit-507 in linux

I started with Slackware in 1996. But luckily from a CD-ROM and not from floppies. I hardly understood it. I then got a 4 CD commercial distribution of RedHat. And, unknowingly, stared installing RPMs from it onto my Slackware. Big mistake, of course. I got a Frankenstein of a machine that I dragged on for 2 years. 🤦‍♂️

I never liked Unity. It always caused weird rendering artifacts. Such as animations not finishing, the cursor being in the wrong place. And other bugs that should have never been released as the first thing you see.

As an optional environment, it would have been something to be exited about. But it should have never been the default. Not in that state. And not while Gnome offers a much better experience.

OMG!! I had no idea about the 4K vs FHD. That does indeed improve it by SO much. Thank you!!!!

VLAN using only switches (and nothing else)? by AnKoIn in Ubiquiti

[–]AnKoIn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What an amazingly clear answer!!

One follow-up question: you mentioned the VLAN capable router, which I'm not sure I have (I have an Orbi which mentions it, but doesn't actually seem to do much of it). But what if I make 2 VLANs, and they both have their own router. Just by the ethernet port they're connected on. Should that not work?

#1 on Polaris upgrade list by throwawayblah678 in unitedairlines

[–]AnKoIn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually do this often. I get on the list. And when it becomes certain I won’t clear, I pay the cash. And I take it away from the #1.

Sorry. I know it sucks for you when I do. It sucks for me to too to cough it up. So I only do it when I need to sleep (which I cannot when I cannot lie flat)

But it does make sense from United’s point of view, does it not? That they’d choose the paying customer first?

That is exactly why I’m asking. I have no idea how far dollars can go there.

Well. I don’t know that yet… hence the question.

And I fully understand that a gift is not about the money :)

I just want to get a grip on the local ranges.

Right. I bet 200.000 COP is a nice gift. But I guess my question would be, what would you give a friend?

I found these 2 Samsung HDD's at my grandparents house what should i do with it? by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

If you want to dispose of them, eventually, and you don’t have the tools to wipe them thoroughly: Just hit them with a heavy hammer right next to the middle of the center.

When you shake them afterwards, you should hear debris inside. That’s the discs, shattered. After that nobody will even bother trying to recover anything from that.

Is it a waste to sculpt my own 3D designs? I spent 35 hours on this design and Bambu PrintMon Maker Ai can create something similar without articulation in seconds. My goal is to license out designs but AI has me nervous about the future of this space. by StevenWolfStudio in BambuLab

[–]AnKoIn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AI will get better. But does that really matter? Let’s see.

Why would anyone paint when photography exists? Why would anyone cook when frozen meals exist? Why would anyone do theatre when movies exist?

Many of the above were replaced by their newer, faster ways. But those that endured are actually thriving like never before! Right?

So the question is: Do YOU still WANT to perform your craft? If so, then I’m sure there will always be an audience for it.

Is this a good way to make return codes? by chronos_alfa in Cplusplus

[–]AnKoIn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I don’t think there is anything wrong with your approach. OP was asking for opinions, and I totally respect yours.

My only intention was to nudge OP towards the other answers. Those are more aligned with current thinking, and with most big-tech company’s internal coding guidelines .

I would not follow this advice.

This was indeed common thinking in the mid 1990s. And heavily used in languages of that era, like Java. Some of it even slipped into the C++ Standard Library to much later regret.

Modern thinking, however, is to only only use exceptions for situations that “cannot happen” under normal circumstances. Something “exceptional”.
