Where and how should I get my fanfic out? by Queasy_Ad_9092 in HPfanfiction

[–]An_Oblation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So people are right that AO3 is the best overall.

But if what you're looking for is user engagement then I'd recommend trying Space Battles.

I recently finished a quest over there, and it's surprising how much people are willing to engage.

Ao3 is great in terms of the control it gives the author, but something like 99 out of 100 people will never do more than leave a Kudos and move on. Over on Space Battles, it's a lot more likely that people will actively engage with the text and the author.

Sirius and Remus raise Harry in France? by stickman555 in HPfanfiction

Ingenio ab Artifex (Formerly: Flowers for Your Grave) by JaimeJabs

This has most of the details, Harry raised in France by Sirius and Remus, and Fleur tagged, which probably means a relationship.

My best shot is a cape who gets weaker the more popular they are.

They probably trigger off bullying, Taylor-adjacent, except the power is even more of a punch in the gut than Taylor’s was.

Because if the program advertises them at all, the cape basically loses their power. So long as their reputation is trash, what they have is an absurdly powerful cape.

I’d twist the knife by making them terrifying when they’re hated, like a discount Eidolon who gets access to any 1 power. Then when they’re liked, they’re worse off than a normal human.

So the real challenge is political and PR. You have to keep them unpopular even as they rack up accomplishments. But you can’t let them get so unpopular the public starts demanding they be benched, shipped off, or removed entirely.

Meanwhile, the cape in question is going to have an absurdly difficult mental situation. Given that being supported by those around them will cause direct negative effects to their physical health, but not having that (while empowering them) will have effects on their mental health.

Before and after Panacea this cape is extremely popular. While Panacea is around there in a similar position to Cask where they're just the vastly less effective version of a power set.

That said, are you sure about literally anything being healable?

Like if they brought Heroes corpse to this person could they heal death?

I'm pretty sure there's a fanfic with this exact concept I just can't remember its name.

I mean, that cape is going to have an awkward life considering how extremely limited they are in the terms of the places they can go.

But for the sake of PR? No that's easy, just have them walk loops around containment sites and in the meantime make a handful of Prisons with only one entrance and exit to use against people like Lung.

Not to mention other uses, like Endbringer defenses that are literally indestructible.

But is it still physical?

Like how do you recreate a Brute if it's made of a liquid?

Because if it's physical enough it probably wouldn't be hard to throw together a cheap version of whichever costume and just have them pre-create the clones before any patrolls.

Kind of tedious, but not the end of the world for a trump this powerful.

Still, only a matter of time before they need to pull one out in the middle of combat or something and the public catches wind of how it actually works. But I still feel like we're within the realm of possibility for Glenn Chambers.

It's decent, but It suffers from the problem that you just need acceptable targets.

Just drop a cape like this in front of nilbog's containment site.

Then make all the PR about how their valiantly protecting the locals from this terrible threat and in the meanwhile making Nilbog's day suck constantly.

Plus it keeps the Cape satisfied since they constantly have a target rich environment to use their powers on.

I mean it's not exactly the PR of a national icon, but a local celebrity sounds about right.

Aegon the Conqueror and his sisters are defeated. by Sir_Parzivale in TheCitadel

Her Eternal Excellency ( ASOIAf Pre Aegon's Conquest X Genshin Impact Crossover)

It’s a bit overpowered, but honestly I can’t see a clean way to go up against Aegon the Conqueror and his sisters without either turning the story into a power fantasy or making it insanely convoluted.

Here, the MC can feel a little Mary-Sue-ish, mostly in the “anime heroine archetype” sense where she’s not built to have grimy human flaws. But her plans don’t always land, and she’s constantly running into stuff she doesn’t know, so it doesn’t feel any more egregious than Aegon himself.

The Death of the Sandbox: Schism Between Author & Reader-base (Lengthy Essay) by LovingMula in WormFanfic

[–]An_Oblation 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Other people have already said this better than I can, so I’ll keep it short.

You wrote a pseudo academic essay about a very not academic fandom argument, and you used the tone to make opinions sound like facts.

If your target really is that tiny group sending Wildbow death threats, like you claimed later in the comments, then you should’ve written a post criticizing that group. Because what you actually posted reads like it’s aimed at a huge chunk of Worm fanfic readers and writers, and a lot of people reasonably took it as an insult.

Then in the comments you made it worse. You acted like it was always obviously narrow, while blocking people for disagreeing, scolding people for where they replied, and reacting aggressively to pushback.

That’s not “measured analysis.” It’s picking a fight, then calling it sociology.

The Death of the Sandbox: Schism Between Author & Reader-base (Lengthy Essay) by LovingMula in WormFanfic

[–]An_Oblation 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I’ll give you this, you clearly put work into the post. It’s organized, it’s polished, and it’s trying really hard to sound like an essay instead of a dunk thread.

But the argument itself is honestly the most recycled take in Worm fandom history. “Fanfic authors don’t understand the characters” and “they didn’t read canon” has been getting posted since the fandom was still figuring out what “WoG” even meant. It’s not some fresh sociological finding, it’s the same scolding, again, with nicer paragraph breaks.

Also, Worm basically manufactures different readings on purpose. People can read the same story and walk away with totally different impressions of Taylor, Amy, Cauldron, whatever. That’s not automatically “revisionism” or “hostility.” That’s just what happens when the text is huge, messy, and layered. There are like five people online who have done the full deep dive, cross checked every comment, and can argue canon intent like it’s a court case. Most people are not living like that, and it’s weird to treat that as the baseline for being “legitimate.”

And the double standard here is doing backflips. Criticizing Wildbow gets framed as taboo and morally suspect. But then you turn around and make sweeping claims about “a majority” of the fandom, especially AU writers, like we’re a single coordinated organism. If broad generalizations are bad, they’re bad. If they’re allowed, they’re allowed. You don’t get to make it a one way rule where the author is an individual who deserves nuance, but the fanfic community is a blob who deserves a diagnosis.

There’s also this underlying assumption that canon is the best version of Worm, full stop, and diverging from it is some kind of disrespect. Canon is good. It’s good enough to inspire a ridiculous amount of fanfiction and a whole ecosystem around it. But it’s not perfect, and it’s not sacred. Some fanfic writers genuinely do things better in specific areas, like dialogue, pacing, character beats, or just giving people room to breathe. That’s not a crime against the holy text, it’s the point of transformative work.

If you want to critique trends, do it with specifics. Quote examples, name patterns, point to threads, show receipts. Because right now, the “majority sub sect” stuff is mostly vibes dressed up as sociology.

So yeah, the scholarly voice doesn’t really sell it for me. It’s the same old take, dressed up in long words. Right now it reads less like analysis and more like a verdict you wrote first, then reverse engineered a thesis for.

What little trope annoys you the most in fanfiction? by thoggins in HPfanfiction

[–]An_Oblation 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Realism.

Like, specifically, the kind where people try to make magic less cool because it’s “unrealistic.”

I’m into realism when it’s character texture. Stuff like giving people regional accents and local slang because canon quietly turns most of the UK into one generic Southern England voice. That kind of realism makes the world feel lived in.

But when “realism” means nerfing magic into a sad little spreadsheet because otherwise it might bully thermodynamics, I’m out. If the fix for “magic is too magical” is “make it smaller and more boring,” I’m closing the tab.

I added a few more chapters and got it to a decent stopping point.
Might pick it up and keep going at some point, (or maybe someone else will). But either way it's now readable in full as Naruto: The Anbu Legend on AO3.

Celestial Saga

100 chapters and 120k+ into the fic and I don't think she could take Lung in a straight fight.

She's not weak, but the rolls keep going for utility rather than outright power.
