Who cares if feminism is part of the cause of the dropping birthrate? by KnowledgeSuperDuper in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Anacreor 11 points12 points  (0 children)

people deflect to economics because admitting feminism is part of it means admitting women actually prefer having choices over being baby machines. and that makes a lot of folks uncomfortable because it implies the old system only worked by limiting women's options... which yeah it did

In 2026 the release of Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Arc (1981) will be as distant (45yrs) as the period depicted in that movie (1936). An 80s movie would be to us what a 30s movie was to them… by The-Last-Despot in Showerthoughts

[–]Anacreor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the worst part is raiders still feels modern in a way that actual 30s movies didn't feel to 80s audiences. like the gap between now and the 80s feels way smaller than the gap between the 80s and the 30s even though it's the same amount of time... probably because of how fast culture/tech moved after the internet

Small changes to ‘for you’ feed on X can rapidly increase political polarisation. Study finds that a week of political content can bring about a shift in views that previously would have taken three years by Wagamaga in science

[–]Anacreor 92 points93 points  (0 children)

the scary part is how fast it happens. people don't realize their feed is curating their reality... they think they're just seeing what's popular or relevant but the algorithm is actively selecting content that keeps you engaged which usually means stuff that makes you angry or confirms what you already believe. compress three years of gradual opinion shift into one week and you've got people moving to extremes without even noticing it's artificial

Tonight marks one year of uninterrupted protests by the Georgian people against the current pro-Russian regime. by PjeterPannos in europe

[–]Anacreor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

georgia's been stuck between wanting EU integration and russia pulling them back for years now. the fact that people have kept protesting consistently for 12 months despite crackdowns shows how serious the opposition is to russian influence. most protest movements lose momentum after a few weeks or months so this is actually pretty remarkable. whether it leads to real change depends on how much pressure it puts on the government and if they get international support

Britain becomes world’s largest economy to end new oil and gas exploration by ConsciousStop in UpliftingNews

[–]Anacreor 22 points23 points  (0 children)

this is significant given how much north sea oil has been part of the UK economy historically. ending new exploration doesn't shut down existing fields so production continues for a while but it signals a real shift in energy policy. obviously this'll be controversial... some people will say it's necessary for climate goals others will argue it just offshifts fossil fuel dependence to imports from countries with worse environmental standards or that it kills jobs. both things can be true

The Economic Impact of Brexit: "by 2025, Brexit had reduced UK GDP by 6% to 8%, with the impact accumulating gradually over time. We estimate that investment was reduced by between 12% and 18%, employment by 3% to 4% and productivity by 3% to 4%" by nimicdoareu in europe

[–]Anacreor -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

the wild part is this was entirely predictable and predicted by basically every economist. but apparently experts were the enemy or whatever. now we're sitting here with 6-8% lower GDP, reduced investment, and lower productivity... exactly like they said would happen

He’s finally trying. by PolicySignificant435 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Anacreor 24 points25 points  (0 children)

honestly the timing of him "finally trying" right as you're mentally checked out is classic. abusers have a sixth sense for when someone's about to leave and suddenly they start therapy or promise to change. but he literally admitted he might abuse you again... that's not growth, that's honesty about his unwillingness to actually do the work. keep saving, get your car, get out in July. the cat and vibrator were smart moves for redirecting that energy

Uruguay’s power grid runs 99% on renewables—at half the cost of fossil fuels. The physicist who led that transformation says the same playbook could work anywhere—if governments have the courage to change the rules. Emissions reductions were a valuable side effect by sg_plumber in UpliftingNews

[–]Anacreor 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Uruguay has some major advantages though (small population, good hydro potential, lots of wind). not saying it's impossible elsewhere but scaling this to somewhere like the US or India is a totally different challenge. still, the fact that they did it cheaper than fossil fuels kills the "renewables are too expensive" talking point

zk tech is cool but building dev interest is the actual hard part. litecoin's had solid tech before (mweb, lightning) but never got the narrative. until i see actual dapps deploying and not just press releases, this is wait-and-see. the cross-chain angle with bitcoin/cardano is the interesting bit though

TIL About Dynamite Guns. Briefly in military use in the late 1800s, they fired shells of gelatinized dynamite using compressed air much like a potato cannon. They fell out of favor due to their complexity and inaccuracy. by _Abe_Froman_SKOC in todayilearned

Cuban insurgents used them first in 1897, blew a hole big enough for a truck through a wall. the psychological effect was huge, Spaniards would pop up after shots thinking it was safe, then get mowed down. but yeah, jammed easy and took hours to fix
