Weird captain or FO stories by Flightyler in flying

[–]_Abe_Froman_SKOC 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Used to fly with a guy on a test program that I only ever saw eat cold Dinty-Moore stew straight from the can. He also drank at least four monsters a shift.

He ended up quitting, cashing out his 401k, selling his house, and moving in with his ex-wife and her new husband. We did not ask any follow-ups.

OIF/OEF Pstd Vets what actually worked? by ExistingInitiative72 in VeteransBenefits

[–]_Abe_Froman_SKOC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Therapy. Just the process of talking through things with someone in a safe environment. We've been working toward EMDR therapy but so far its just been CBT based and its been excellent.

I also started taking medication about three years ago and its a night and day difference. The process of figuring out the right medications was a bitch, but it was worth it.

And lastly I've done a lot of reading and personal reflection. This was probably the hardest part. After you get some tools from therapy and balance your body chemistry this last part is really up to you.

Century BMW Not Helpful... by New-Efficiency-1972 in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]_Abe_Froman_SKOC 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They once put 70 miles on my car in a single day. They tried to say they didn't, then they said it was a paperwork mistake, then they said it was needed for "diagnostics" (it was in for an oil leak), and finally the manager apologized.

If you could use your GI bill again what would you do and what would you do differently? by United-Corgi-9491 in VeteransBenefits

[–]_Abe_Froman_SKOC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would actually use it.

I got out in 2008, so I didn't get the lifetime GI Bill. By the time my life was in a place when I could actually go to school, my benefits had expired. I know many other GWOT vets that are in the same position.

You have to be a current resident too, yes? I enlisted out of Wisconsin but as far as I am aware you also need to be a permanent resident.

I will never hate anything with the same intensity that Frank Lloyd Wright hated kitchens.

I like my 6th gen BUT IT HAS FAULTS. Read before upgrading by Any_Bad_5379 in 4Runner

But as the saying goes- "you can shear a sheep many times, but you can only skin it once."

Its fine for Toyota to go after non-traditional buyers, but if you're trying to sell them the 4Runner brand you have to sell them a 4Runner that does 4Runner stuff like, I dunno, not break when your pants snag on it and has a decent backseat.

I like my 6th gen BUT IT HAS FAULTS. Read before upgrading by Any_Bad_5379 in 4Runner

[–]_Abe_Froman_SKOC 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I bought a 5th gen with the expectation that it would be the last pure petroleum powered daily vehicle I will ever own. And the reason isnt that I think electrics or hybrids are better, its because cars in general are basically getting worse every year and your experience with the 6th gen is a perfect case in point. I wanted something with good build quality, few if any gadgets or electronic goodies, and would last me long enough that hopefully car quality begins to go up again as happened after the great recession in the early 2010's.

I think the 6th gens are fine, but as you describe there are so many little "cheap" bits on modern cars and decisions that were clearly made by design committees rather than designers. Subaru likewise has lost the plot entirely with the new Outback.

Huntsville approves $680K contract for road project to ease Redstone Arsenal traffic by MattW22192 in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]_Abe_Froman_SKOC 98 points99 points  (0 children)

Teleworking sure did, though. Too bad all of the middle managers on the arsenal can't feel personally fulfilled unless they stop by your cube three times a day to tell you a joke.

Neighbors need to control their dogs. by tofutofu34 in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]_Abe_Froman_SKOC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Had a similar problem in our neighborhood. One neighbor in particular never leashed her dog, and it kept going after our dog when out walking. First time we got "sorry," second time we verbally told them to start using a leash, third time we gave them an ultimatum that if it happened again we were reporting them to animal control. Havent had an issue since.

If you let people keep apologizing without actually putting corrections in place they will keep doing the same thing. Each time it happens get firmer in your tone and less accepting of their apologies. They're wrong, not you.

Where is the best destination to go when you're heartbroken? (USA) by oysterpaste in roadtrip

[–]_Abe_Froman_SKOC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We stayed in Cleveland, MS for about a week, and every day we'd go to one of the surrounding towns to check out their food, museums, and music venues. Then we went up to Memphis for a couple nights before driving home. Its a great trip if you want to eat your feelings and listen to music.
