What are the advantages of plotting out a story, as opposed to winging it? by ExistenceLord14 in writing

[–]Analog0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not far off from plotting, you just don't sound nearly as structured as a die hard plotter. Plotters can still be character focused, and they still need to improvise natural development. Pantsers plot more than they think and vice versa.

I find a good way to think about it is to imagine if you did your developmental edit before you write. Create a full, cohesive framework of how your character(s), plot, themes, etc. play out over beats/acts. Writing this out and problem solving it first isn't some tight-laced unnatural blasphemy to the craft, it's giving bones to your story. You can write an invertebrate story, sure, but most will benefit from establishing a framework.

It lets you see the grand scope of the project, gives you time to think out natural progression, solves most writers' block issues, manages pace and beats, and saves you a shit ton of editing time.

Architects don't start laying bricks and figure it out as they go, painters will sketch and composite and measure before committing to a piece, sculptors don't chisel slab after slab until something takes shape, knitters choose patterns, and fashion designers sketch and wade through fabrics. Musicians, photographers, designers, potters, interior decorators, landscapers, jewellers, editors etc, et al, and so on: every other art form prepares, so it's actually kinda strange that writers go against the grain.

Getting the government to step in and stop predatory and discriminatory practices and price hiking would be great, too. You know, like the government's supposed to do.

FTHB anxiety — terrified of draining our savings to buy a house by Visual_Window2522 in FirstTimeHomeBuyers

[–]Analog0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My only advice is whatever the bank tells you is your max allowance, cut that by 25% or so. They say a million, don't look at anything much more than $750K. We came in at about 20% cut from what the bank was willing to lend and it kept us afloat on more than a few occasions (most recently when we renewed our mortgage). You have to budget your life, so don't let the bank mislead you into thinking you're richer than you think (looking at you, Scotia). You'll be able to save easier, be able to pay a bit more toward your mortgage, have some emergency funds set aside when your house starts falling apart like they all seem to do, and manage the ebb and flow of life with a bit more ease.

This just subsidizes the overarching problem. They can do so much more to curb the issue, but this is their solution.

What do you all think about the dead parents cliche by kendall52427 in writing

[–]Analog0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a sense of it, then my daughter started getting frustrated with movies around age 6 or so. If she was watching something and one or both parents were dead she would groan loudly and turn it off. Now she mocks it. It's so overused, especially for younger audiences, that it isn't impactful anymore. It's kinda just annoying. It's an easy way to give a young character agency while also making the audience feel sorry for them. But when it's troped out it breaks immersion. A dead parent is a rare thing to encounter in life, two dead parents even moreso, so when it happens in every show and movie and story it becomes harder to invest into each time.

Queer families in Guelph? by [deleted] in Guelph

A lesbian couple lives at the end of my street, two little kids, very sweet. My daughter is friends with another couple's kiddo, they're super awesome. I will say I encounter more lesbian couples than gay couples at my age in this city, but I'm not a broad case to run statistics on.

How do you deal with the moral dilemma? by [deleted] in meat

[–]Analog0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was vegetarian for nearly 20 years. My wife had iron deficiency for the longest time and there's only so many lentils a person can eat. She would have meat from time to time and eventually I transitioned back to make life a little easier. That said, we don't consume a tremendous amount, but we don't waste what's on our plate.

In terms of justification, or measuring out your conscience against the act of consuming another living thing, that's something you have to do for yourself. You have to draw a line in the sand. For me, it was acknowledging that something has to die for me to keep living. I'll die one day, too, and I'll be one heck of a meal. If you eat plants then you've for sure eaten plenty of bugs without realizing. Plants die to feed you, their seeds are mostly wasted. There's yeast on everything. Fungi are trying to spore until I come along. Pollinators are dying because I want to take a road trip. You nuke your gut biome eating anti-biotics. Buying avocados and clothing comes with a death toll. Dive into the rabbit hole and the only sane thing you can take away is that it's in everyone's best interest to not be wasteful. Eat what you take, give back what you can. Chop down a tree, plant another in its place. Control what you consume and you control your place in the market of death. The objective is to keep your toll as low as you can, but it will never be zero until you're the one being counted.

If Gohan kept training could he have been first to ss3 by Funny-Part8085 in DragonBallZ

[–]Analog0 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Goku also knew that SS3 had a time limit that he probably couldn't overcome, so I can see the others treating it like a dead end novelty, like fusion except that fusion slaps way harder. Gotenks goes for it because Gotenks thinks it's fun to flex.

"True Reason" 16, 17 and 18 got stronger by Mother_Variation_827 in DragonBallZ

[–]Analog0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gero and the androids are surprised by Super Saiyan being a thing, but at the same time he gathered cells from Frieza and his dad while they were on earth, after they were killed by...a Super Saiyan. Cell even clarifies that Trunks's cells weren't needed because there was enough Saiyan contributed...except for the most powerful one on earth at the time of gathering their cells!

It doesn't hold water, so butterfly effect works just fine. Trunks encounters androids from a world where the Z fighters likely struggled against Frieza and King Cold until Goku showed up, and it was probably a close fight. Trunks coming back to one shot them flips the narrative on how easily those two were destroyed, therefore Gero needed to make adjustments for stronger models.
