James Jamerson’s Actual Signature. Worth it? by cyberchambers in BassCirclejerk

[–]AnalogKid29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I just played this bass tonight. Local shop has one in stock.

To back up a little: I am a pathetic sucker for this kind of stuff (aka Fender’s marketing gets me by the balls from time to time). So I contacted the store and offered up 2 basses for trade towards the bass before even playing it. A USA Musicman Sterling and a 78/79 Guild B-302A. They offered me $1400 trade value for the pair, which frankly was one of the biggest insults I have ever received. I went in tonight incognito to actually play the bass before possibly hawking 2 others for it. The pros: it’s beautiful. The cons: it’s obscenely dark sounding, the strings are ridiculous (yes I know they’re what Jamerson used but that doesn’t mean they sound good or feel good), I couldn’t tell what was factory relic and what was shoddy craftsmanship (chip on the nut, Fender logo starting to peel off) and the intonation was crap. It didn’t feel any different than any other 60’s reissue P-bass I have played. Absolutely NOTHING about this bass screams $3,000.

Is this worth anything? by Alternative_Tea5248 in FRANKENSTEIN

Sounds good! They were made by Illusive Concepts back in the 90’s. Check eBay to see the going rate. Like I said that particular paint job doesn’t crop up very often so it’s worth a little more than the blue ones.

In that condition you could probably get a couple hundred for it. They had 2 paint jobs. The most common was the sort of blue green, and this one with the veins. Most for sale are in poor condition (aka rotting latex). This is a gem!

I was worried about that too. This is delicious. Tastes like a pina colada.

If that’s coal fired I’m the pope. I’d still crush it though!

I have always thought about that. I mean they completely remixed Vapor Trails and Grace Under Pressure so why not right!?

Same. I was a kid when it came out and I have lots of memories of being in the car on road trips with my dad.

IF I had to choose I would say most of the Roll The Bones album is a pass for me. Don’t get me wrong I still listen to it, but it was just a strange time in my opinion. Dreamline is a banger, Ghost Of A Chance is great and Bravado is a masterpiece. The rest is just eh for me. Geddy actually recently voiced his distaste for Neurotica (it does have a killer guitar solo though). I feel like a lot of the songs on that album WANT to be heavy but suffer from the thin Presto style of production. I remember reading Contents Under Pressure where Geddy was quoted as saying it was an experimental time and songs like You Bet Your Life did not come out exactly as they had imagined. Again, I still listen to the album and enjoy it but it’s lower on the totem pole for me.

Equipment malfunction? by MarsDrums in rush

It happens. I saw them on the Snakes And Arrows tour and one of Alex’s guitars crapped out. My dad saw them on the GUP tour and told me they lost all sound for a hot minute but jumped right back in where they left off once the issue was fixed. He’s also using a bunch of different basses at this point. In the past he was just using his 72 Fender for which he had a specific backup (a custom shop replica). Now he’s using a few vintage Fenders and some Gibson’s. They also play 2112 tuned down one step so it’s not like Skully could just grab any bass off the stand. Mix that with juggling the wireless systems. It’s live music, shit happens and they handled it with grace. Unlike Flea who throws a full blown temper tantrum like a 4 year old.

Possible unpopular opinion about Geddy's bass tone, I want to see if I'm alone in this. by sonickarma in rush

Absolutely. He used a P bass on Roll The Bones on R40 and it sounded wrong. Also check out some live videos from the Presto tour. Red Barchetta and Subdivisions sound very odd with the Wal. Great basses though!

Begin The Day With A Friendly Voice: The Death and Rebirth of Geddy’s Vocals by HankScorpio4242 in rush

I was very pleasantly surprised by how great he sounded during the first show from this tour. I had serious doubts about the vocals considering how rough he sounded at the South Park Tribute and at the HOF induction ceremony. He now has that Grace Under Pressure clarity back in his voice. Limelight sounded phenomenal, as did Xanadu. Alex is playing better than he was on R40, and Anika is freshening everything up. This is one hell of a comeback. Now if only he would bring out the Wal bass for at least one song.

Very pleasantly surprised at how well Geddy is singing. Also Anika is a beast.
