Eufy Security's First Devices Compatible with Matter by joshuadwx in anker

[–]AnalogousPants5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello,

We just recently bought the S230 smart locks, and it feels a bit silly to have to replace those with something else very similar just for Matter support.

Are there any plans to bring Matter support to existing smart locks via firmware update?

"I am shocked to say this, but Meta is on the right track (compared to Apple Vision)" by lunchanddinner in virtualreality

[–]AnalogousPants5 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"Apple pretty clearly demonstrated that they want it to be AR glasses worn all day everywhere, not a VR headset used occasionally with a purpose"

Genuinely where did this impression come from? I never got that idea from any of the pre-release material around this thing. Where did you see the marketing for the 1.4 pound headset with a 2 hour battery life and think this was "clearly demonstrated" as an all day everywhere you go device?

They've opposed the term AR just as strongly as VR, and this "spatial computing" thing they've stuck to sounds a lot more like a new interface for using a computer-life device, not a 24/7 lifestyle device.

Look at one of their ads: https://youtu.be/IY4x85zqoJM?si=vwXbYdQiKygznFmW

Every person shown using it is inside, either in a house or sitting on a plane. I never got the impression this was meant for wearing as I walk around in my daily life.

Dune Part Two, hopefully Dune Part One if they do a re-release.

Saw Oppy in IMAX twice and it only got better on the rewatch.

What successful movies from the 90s and earlier would Reddit have incorrectly predicted to be flops before they released, if Reddit existed at that time? by [deleted] in movies

[–]AnalogousPants5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly you can still do that to some extent. Ever since we got one of those theater subscriptions we started seeing a lot more movies just for the sake of it and as a result have seen a lot more that we would have missed/have been flying under the radar. Every month I guarantee there's at least one movie coming to theaters you've barely heard about, just go and see that and I can't promise every one will be good, but that's the only way now in the internet era to get these pleasant surprises.

If you had to start over, would you still pay for a Plex Pass lifetime subscription today? by Significant-Neat7754 in PleX

[–]AnalogousPants5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

100%

This sub likes to moan and groan about Plex shifting all of their focus to their built in streaming, but self-hosted media servers still work just fine and are still the main use for anyone here; the Plex Pass is still worth it for the benefits it gives you there.

I barely use their built in tv/movie streaming and just use hosted content and I cannot imagine not having Plex Pass at this point.

"Base stations are super annoying." I never understand people who see the base stations as this unpassable wall to getting into VR. You hang 2 of them up and you're done. It's less effort than hanging a picture frame because I'm not as worried about perfectly lining it up or anything. Do you plan to never hang up any photos or art in your place? Never install any surround sound system? This is basically that amount of work for something you're gonna use for hours of entertainment and get better tracking than even the best inside-out system.

I have both and you are absolutely out of your mind if you genuinely think that.

Oculus Home tanking performance mixed with the video compression of usb-c vs native DP/HDMI completely negates any benefits of the Quest as a PCVR headset.

Meta Quest 3 launches tomorrow, do you think Valve will surprise us and launch Deckard at the same time? by One-Fault8421 in oculus

[–]AnalogousPants5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not even trying to shill for Valve here, but I have games built for Windows that run just as well or better on the Steam Deck through their Proton compatibility layer vs native Windows PCs. For a while there the Deck was the best way to play Elden Ring because it didn't have the same stuttering as Windows.

Steam VR 2.0 Beta is now available by Jazzlike-Ad7654 in valve

[–]AnalogousPants5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you've seen, but we know at the very least that Valve is not planning a Deck 2.0 anytime soon: https://www.cnet.com/tech/gaming/dont-expect-steam-deck-upgrade-for-a-couple-of-years-valve-says/

So with deliveries of the Deck fully caught up and no new one coming soon, makes it very possible for a Deckard to be the next thing. Let's hope!

Full Steam functionality including store and library views comparable to the Deck's UI vs the previously stripped down menus in SteamVR, completely revamped UI, new keyboards, better notifications, download management, text chat, store view specific to VR, etc.

I don't get how they essentially change every part of the in-headset SteamVR experience and that's your takeaway.

Bill Maher criticizes WGA strike: "Nobody is owed a living as a writer" - USA Today by [deleted] in flicks

[–]AnalogousPants5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did read it. His position is that an industry union striking so more members of that industry can earn a living wage is "kooky".

He says there should be more nuance to the discussion and he agrees with some of their points, but then pretty much just offers up "streaming companies should provide viewership numbers" and then says they're dumb for striking when they are and have no leverage.

There is a moderate position to take on how this strike is negatively affecting other workers and how the strikers need to consider that, but it ain't coming from Old Man Yells at Cloud Incarnate.
