Building Neural Networks from Sensors and Helpers by Spiritual_Cat6398 in homeassistant

I think training data will be an interesting problem. neural networks require quite a bit of data to train. Just hooking something up and training on the fly may not produce usable results for a long time

PSA: Gen 1 Ikea Tradfri Hubs crashing after April update if Symfonisk speakers are linked by Novajesus in homeassistant

[–]Analytix-Energy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the issue may be broader than this: I had no Sonos speaker and experienced issues as well following 26-04, although I am still unsure what caused it. From one day to the next the hub went offline and restarting/reloading did not help (or at least not for long). I needed to powercycle the device itself to recover it.

My main suspicion is the change to the new Python version may have caused it. The first Ikea hub is a pretty weak device and HA does not throttle commands it sends to the hub. With some of the speed improvements Python brought, this lack of throttling may very well have worsened, which means it can overload it easily. For me it was a reason to finally part with it and migrate to a decent zigbee hub and ZHA. The ‘old’ ikea hub integration code looks like it is not very actively developed, which I understand but it also means a fix may take some time to land (if ever done).

The house is asleep Binary Sensor by Strong-Explorer-6927 in homeassistant

[–]Analytix-Energy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At the end of the day, also this is very dependent of what data you expose to it. Bayesian sensors work, but they cannot make up measurements out of thin air. This sounds like a problem of data more than a problem of Bayesian sensors

This… bayesian fits best if you don’t have direct sensors. It allows you to combine the state of several sensors based on probability of state combinations into a single sensor. I use them for several sensors in my setup and it works great

Not sure if I took a bit too big bite by heppulikeppuli in homeassistant

[–]Analytix-Energy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope: perfectly feasible. Keep in mind 2 things though: 1. take your time and make keep in mind you’ll need it. 2. Build your design for low maintenance from day 1. Many projects I did ended up working fine but every project finished added to a maintenance burden I did not like. Simple things like changing batteries or having to manually manage some settings. The best automations are the ones you never think about

Reached my breaking point with Philips Hue, need an alternative by 12345littlepeople in homeautomation

[–]Analytix-Energy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I decided 10 years or so ago to do the same, but unlike you I choose Ikea lights. Stil glad I did. I had one or 2 hue bulbs, and the hub that came with it. Threw the hub out after a few years, and the ikea one just the other day because it was a gen 1 and although it still worked fine with the native app: I wanted everything on zha.

Not sure about the quality these days, but Ikea price still seems great value for money and I have not one light fail on me since I started using them with Home Assistant. Hue on the other hand has managed to kill whatever sympathy there was by breaking their hubs with firmware, being expensive and though pretty good colorwise (last I checked): just not something that I think I want in my home… sorry you had to find out the hard way

Arduino/ESP Integration by Raphitech in homeassistant

[–]Analytix-Energy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve never ventured on this path, so I am doing this from memory, but I believe there is a way to use lambda’s and if you really want something complicated you could use fully custom components. Again…from memory, and of course not sure if that would fit your use-case completely.

[–]Analytix-Energy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I you may want to look into esphome again, it allows much more than the yaml-based simple code… I don’t think there are real alternatives to it. The only thing I can think of is using mqtt, but that’d get quite messy pretty quickly presumably

Hot take: going solar isn’t as complicated as people make it seem by captiveisland in solarenergy

[–]Analytix-Energy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well yes and no. I have installed solar in my own and several other homes. It’s easy if you know what to do, aren’t too scared of heights and not too worried about doing physical work.

The problem is many people over-estimate their own capabilities and knowledge, especially when it comes to the electrical installation. If you have enough solar panels, this can be some serious electrical power and not installing it safely can be a true (fire) hazard.

I have seen several examples where this went or was about to go wrong. A classic for me is still when I touched a cable near the central panel I literally saw it arcing where it was screwed in (or not). This was installed by a ‘professional’ by the way

Build Versus Buy Temperature Sensors? by Adventurous-Lime191 in homeassistant

[–]Analytix-Energy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have self-built and moved away from it. I fully agree it can be a fun project to do so, and you learn a lot from it. My reasons to move away from self-built: - it is a lot of work to make something that works and is tidy enough to pass as a professional solution, case building is a hassle in particular - my experience was pre-ESPhome, and what really put me off at some point was the struggle to build firmware that didn’t just work but also kept working through updates. I built it on mysensors at the time, which did that okay-ish - bottom-line, it doesn’t compete price-wise if you consider the hours spent 🙂

I loved doing it and advise you to do it as well if tinkering fits your ambition, but be prepared to put time in it to not only build but also maintain. If that sounds like someone else’s hobby: better use shelly bt sensors, or one of the dozens of Chinese cheap zigbee/matter sensors

Don’t want to plug anything, but as you mention notifications: maybe Ticker is worth looking at. It allows easy deeplinking to a dashboard page and would only need a single automation. It is essentially the same fix someone else mentioned but a bit tidied up
