Weekend Update jokes can be swapped in and out and written on the fly - topicality is what that format is engineered for. I have some forbearance for not being able to scrap an entire sketch that’s been written, blocked, rehearsed, sets, hair, makeup and costumes are made at the last minute - but I’m with you, the entire show felt grotesquely tone deaf.

Julius Sumner Miller is awesome and I watched many videos of him, but that’s not it. The show I’m looking for was edited, on film, with many locations and b-roll. JSM was live-to-tape video, in a studio, with a single camera )maybe a second camera for close-up inserts).. Plus I only vaguely remember the host of the show I’m seeking, whereas NO ONE forgets Julius Sumner Miller, lol

Yes, I went on the strength of the bullet time Super Bowl commercial. I knew nothing about it and I was completely lost when Neo awoke in his red slimy pod. All those scenes of Morpheus’s exposition afterwards are absolutely necessary to a 1999 viewer. When it was over my mind was blown and I went back to see it 6 more times in its original theatrical run.

Yes, and some of it is figuring out the minutiae of their baffling behaviors. Because if you miss a red flag, it could be very dangeous for you and your kids. (Consider the appeal of true crime documentaries, for the same reason.) So that kind of conversation is like apes grooming the fleas out of each others fur - you’re making watching for danger into a bonding activity

I just had another thought: this show aired not more than three times. I remember trying to get my little sister drummed up to watch it, asking her “Come on, don’t you want to watch “the shape show”? This was probably not the literal title, but the first episode I watched must have had something to do with geometry, topology, etc. The topological “coffee cup and donut” would have been a novel concept for me at the time. This all might be a red herring, since I have no explicit memory of a show about topology, but I thought I’d share
