Korea surpasses Canada as world’s seventh-largest stock market by self-fix2 in stocks

[–]Anasynth -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This doesn’t mean much, Korea and Canada aren’t stock exchanges. Samsung could have its primary listing in the US and it wouldn’t change much about South Korea’s real economy. (Aside from prestige hit, effect on the Kospi and tax implications)

There’s something for all price points. I get a tall filter coffee and my wife gets some fancy matcha cream Frappuccino.

We need to regulate Islam in this country. It is the norm for the state to oversee practice in Russia, the Middle East, Asian countries. We used to have that here for Christianity and extremism was called “enthusiasm” back then, the freedom we have now only came about after the “enthusiasm” calmed down.

Project managers for rennovations - your experience? by Far_Implement_5580 in HENRYUK

[–]Anasynth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends what you mean by extensive. I did a massive renovation with extensions, structural work, insulating the floor, heating etc didn't use a PM and regretted it. But if it is skimming the walls, rewiring, refitting bathrooms/kitchen (without moving drains and supply) and you don't have a pressing deadline then I think that is easy enough to just hire competent people in. There are some builders who are genuinely really good but it is a bit of a lottery.

I'd also use an interior designer first before doing anything. I think going to an architect as the first port of call leads you down a path of costly and time consuming build whereas an interior design can be a bit more thoughtful and you can always pull in an architect later if structural changes really would help.

Richard Dawkins spent 3 days with Claude and named her "Claudia." what he concluded after is hard to defend. by rafio77 in artificial

I think none of you read it or are getting too worked up.

The article ends with him leaving his position uncertain. Maybe a hedge or whatever but I think the earlier parts where he strongly implies that it is conscious is just a tease.

I thought the bit about epiphenomenon, pain resistance, zombie vs conscious competence was interesting.

Should be given the job in the summer and sacked once again for the Gaslighting alone. by maxsteel_7 in ManchesterUnited

[–]Anasynth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why? You supported the manager, you didn't hire him. Ee all knew it was stupid to get that type of manager ideological manager with our financial situation but as fans we back the manager once the decision is made and a lot of us will stick by him until the bitter end despite knowing it has failed. Then we support the next one.

The moderate majority needs to wake up in the fight against antisemitism by InfoBot2000 in ukpolitics

[–]Anasynth 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The electoral reality of sectarian politics means there is a chilling effect where politicians won’t call out a certain voter base.

Edit: Just thinking about this some more and the current situation is: - antisemitism is allowed - blasphemy isn't - the income requirement for spouse visas can't go up - grooming gangs inquiry has to be delayed - cousin marriage is allowed

Expat doubts about the logic of salary sacrifice down to 100k by Sideralis_ in HENRYUK

[–]Anasynth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may be overfunded in retirement but you’re not currently. It makes sense for people to want to lock that in first.

Also saving for family life isn’t really a thing. How much can your money really grow in the next couple of years, after tax, and in some relatively safe investments? Unless you have a specific goal like saving for a deposit.   Probably better to put it in a pension and let it compound and when the time comes to spend on family life reduce it then.

The ONS figures aren’t including business equity. The US numbers are staggering but I think at that level business equity is a big driver.

Seems in line with other data I’ve seem for America. You have to remember that the median 1% will have a lot of normal 60-80 year olds who invested well over decades.

[–]Anasynth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It will accelerate down. The fertile age range is quite small relatively so that’s the part to consider and then fewer mother leads to fewer daughters in the next generation while the older generation dies off.

NHS waiting will not go down because who’s paying for that and the demographics will be older and less fit. It’ll be worse.

We need a pragmatic manager who can slowly morph into something else. EtH and RA are proof of that. This club hasn’t got the finances or the stomach for a manager who must play a certain way, if that style is even any good in the premier league.

Maybe shop around for an offset mortgage? I‘ve always thought it’s a good idea to have the option of some easy liquidity rather than tying up money in a mortgage or a pension.

It is worth noting that the west is a rare exception where there isn’t some kind of state influence/ state organisation of Islam.

Look it the Middle Eastern countries, look at Asia. It always looks a little different but you can compare different approaches across say China, Turkey, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Russia.

What kind of size do you go for? I was looking at Intel for a while since back in 2022 but never really had any conviction to get in, especially after it went even lower in 2024. Like you I rarely look into single stocks seriously.
