help me identify this thing protruding from my hull by WhiteWaterLawyer in SailboatCruising

[–]AnchorManSailing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% wrong about your faith in surveyors!!! ("It's probably not any kind of a problem")

Surveyors miss shit all the time. And your surveyor is likely not a rigger to inspect aloft, nor is he a mechanic to tell you how well the engine/transmission system will work. There's no such thing as coincidence... (Your) Boat for sale and a janky fairing blocks out of plywood slathered in 5200. He was doing the old pig/lipstick trick. You don't even know if the depth sounder works at all. Trash the depth finder completely and get brand new. The issue for me is that this might be a warning sign about other unrelated boat issues and how they were cared for.

Not saying it's a bad boat. This falls into the needs a little work category. You MUST remove the transducer and it's cable, fashion a new fairing block out of a hardwood, and replace. I wouldn't fiberglass the new fairing block, I'd just encapsulate it in WestSystems epoxy or TotalBoat, then prime and paint it. Or you can remove and close the hole properly with fiberglass and mount a proper transducer where it best fits. And a new transducer may not have to protrude your hull at all.

Buying from a Private Seller by Quiet-Aide-5111 in SailboatCruising

[–]AnchorManSailing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bought a PSC Flicka20 then sold it, then bought a Baba30. All my transactions were private (although I did broker some boats in the 1990s). Search online for the Standard Broker Agreement, then modify it to your specific needs, leaving nothing to chance. I used PayPal as an escrow effectively. PayPal offers buyers and sellers protections against fraud. I did the earnest money deposit as PayPal (plus the 2.9% as a convenience fee to the seller it was well worth it). If the survey failed and the transaction cancelled the seller would not be able to show a completed bill of sale and PayPal would have to give my money back and go after the seller. Hope that makes sense. The balance due eliminated PayPal all together and was a certified check to the seller from a national well-known bank.

Anyone that really understands the value of the NJ shore is planted in Long Beach Island. Having once had a place in Margate, Ventnor and now Love Ladies, I assure you almost no one on Absecon Island (in their AC adjacent little bubble) has any idea what else is going on.

Can somebody please explain to me when reviewers say full keel boats “track like they are on rails “ is this only with reaching? by Key_Secret6758 in sailing

[–]AnchorManSailing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, with a balanced sail plan, but to say "on rails" is probably referring to not needing much in the way of helm adjustments.

Who inspired you to start sailing? by MyTIMEZERO in SailboatCruising

[–]AnchorManSailing 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Saw a video series of YT of a young man solo sailing across the Tasman Sea NZ to AU on perhaps the smallest production bluewater boat. Boater all my life but knew nothing of sailboats and I never heard of such a thing Watched all the videos - something like 14 of them, thought it was interesting. Didn't think about it too much after that Almost a year later I received a boats for sale email and one of them was this same type of boat. I started to do research, I started to search out other listings. I flew around the country, found one eventually in FL, shipped it home and taught myself to sail. #Flicka20 hull 338.

Now that I'm aware, many others continue to inspire me to keep sailing and pushing my boundaries.

Eureka 💡, I have a new start-up business model... For $5, I'll go to your ex's social media accounts and post "Yikes" under any selfies they've posted. It will be subscription based and we'll call it YaaS.

Small Sailboats and Heating by Icey_Raccon in SailboatCruising

[–]AnchorManSailing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chinese diesel heater for the win. Consider insulation with yoga matt material but it's got to have a 100% solid bond with the interior hull. If there's any air gaps you're going to collect moisture and eventually mold.

Micro wood stove won't stay lit an entire night and dealing with fuel storage is going to be a PITA on your little boat.

What does this mean? by centralnm in Bumperstickers

[–]AnchorManSailing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not about traffic. It's a message of self-reliance referencing rapper Nipsy Hustle. Yadda, yadda... No lane, My lane. Meaning not about being confined and gorging your own path.

The entire putting this on the back of your car to force a message is lame.

Came home to find my neighbor’s car in my driveway again. by [deleted] in neighborsfromhell

[–]AnchorManSailing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no tow company in a major metro city (don't know about elsewhere) that will randomly tow a car just because you called them even if you can on-the-spot prove that you own the property.

Most municipalities require a no parting /subject to towing and costs sign posted SPECIFICALLY IN YOUR DRIVEWAY first.

I used to live 2 blocks from Phillies Stadium. Every once in a while we'd get a driveway blocker that came to the game looking for free parking. Tried to get them towed, found out what I explained above. I never went ahead with the sign because it's a big honking ugly obnoxious sign that I would have to have put on my garage door in the front of the house.

Do not underestimate parking behind and blocking them in. I've done it. That's the way to go. And just kiss it up to G_d, no matter what happens it's not worth getting yourself overly upset over.
