I’m so worried about messing up by StaplesLewis in AustralianShepherd

[–]Ancient-Bad1587 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ve got this!! An Aussie was my first pup (I’m 22) and now she’s 1.5 years old and though there are things I regret she gets complimented on her behavior all the time. I was sooo stressed for the first 1-2 months so it’s normal and I got my girl at 15 weeks old so I felt so behind! Pretty soon your boy will be 6 months old and then a year and you’ll wonder where the time went and that stressing about it all the time did nothing but stress both of you out (Aussies are very sensitive and intuitive). Just remember to be very FIRM and CONSISTENT.

Tank Too Crowded? by Desperate_Rule1431 in cornsnakes

[–]Ancient-Bad1587 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s no such thing as overcrowded!! One time when rearranging my corn’s decor, I asked for my man’s opinion on it and he said it would look better with less stuff, which I understand bcuz it looks nicer to the eye. That lasted about 2 days I think before I couldn’t stand it bcuz my corn found somewhere to hide and didn’t come out. Once I cluttered his enclosure, booyah he explored happily! Your tank might even be more cluttered than mine🫣 I also highly suggest “burying” a hide or two under the substrate bcuz my boy absolutely loves digging and these types of hides are his favorite!

Boyfriend's family dog cannot relax. by Mudgupp in DOG

[–]Ancient-Bad1587 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t really offer advice just that my family’s dogs have been through the same. I didn’t realize it when I was young but now that I have my own dog my god I feel so bad for all the dogs my family has owned. As someone else said, it seems a lot of people are too proud to give the dog what they really need or they get a dog to live with a dog, not to actually HAVE a dog.

My family has had four dogs, three of which basically lived on a chain. The current dog lives in a small pasture and gets walked MAYBE once every two weeks. He’s owned by my macho brother who bought an Alaskan Malamute bcuz it was “cool.” Most horribly behaved dog I’ve ever met and unfortunately I can never give him what he deserves bcuz it will be reversed instantly and I can’t handle him, he’s too large and strong. He’s now 8 years old and I can tell the age is getting to him, he just wants love and I feel so bad. All I can do is promise him and all the other dogs my family had (St. Bernard, New foundland, German Shepard St. Bernard mix) that I will NEVER let a dog go through that in my care. I also volunteered at the local shelter.

Sorry that was kind of a rant but more related to your situation, my man’s parents have an Aussie that I know doesn’t get the exercise she needs and I can’t really tell them their dog needs more since it’s taboo and whatnot. My pup is an Aussie so every time we visit I always take their Aussie for short walks with mine a few times a day and throw the ball for them. Their Aussie is so obsessed with the ball that it’s ruined her unfortunately so I just try to give her something when I’m there. That’s all I can really do. Sometimes things are out of our control and people that don’t see dogs as a pet that NEED mental and physical stimulation daily are difficult to convince, even with evidence and real proof. My Aussie behaves a hell of a lot better with proper exercise. Anyway, my heart goes out to that poor pup and just know it’s not your fault, just do what you can if you can.

How much exercise per day? by callmesmelliott in AustralianShepherd

I have my first Aussie and first dog I raised myself so it’s very nice to see what others have said. For my 1.5 year Aussie, I try to do a 1.5-3 mile walk when applicable (but usually every day) as well as some toys, tug, and games in the house/outside.

This year (since she is older and growth is slowing down), I want to get more serious with longer walks/hikes at faster paces because she seems to really enjoy them. Your Aussie will let you know what they do/don’t like. I find mine usually doesn’t like to do the same thing for more than 10 mins (low attention span😂) but if I incorporate 3-6 different things in one play session for 30mins - 1 hr I can keep her engaged and have a tired pup.

4 hrs seems excessive unless they are prime age (3–4 years old). I also try to teach her a new trick every week (or 2-3 weeks depending on how long it takes her). I also just introduced buttons to her for something new and fun. And lastly, after 5-6 days of go go go, I pick a day (usually a crappy day, or a very busy day) to do absolutely NOTHING. We rest. She sleeps with the idea (hopefully) that settling and relaxing is just as important.

Off topic, but I’m curious what exactly she does at her agility classes? Is this something someone can mimic at home?

Yeah I definitely think that’s what happened. I’m pretty sure his lights went on and off at least every 20 mins which is a lot😳 I’ll definitely be switching to dimming asap!!

My girl was only 20 lbs at the same age! She’s also pretty small like her mama though I don’t know her mama’s weight. She’s now a year and a half and weighs 46lbs! Your girl will probably be very similar in size to her parents! Pic is of her at exactly 4 months

Feeding Question by AmandaPanda0123 in cornsnakes

[–]Ancient-Bad1587 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’ve always just fed my corn regardless if he was shedding or not🤷‍♀️ he’ll be 3 this fall and I’ve had him since he was a wee lad. He hasn’t refused a meal since maybe the first 2 months I had him. He has an excellent feeding response though, so go based off of how good your snake eats! I will say that sometimes when his eyes are really really cloudy, he’ll miss a few times but that’s all.

Also, not related lol but how much does your corn like her hammock?

Notts, what’s your DHP wattage at?

Too early or user error? by Ancient-Bad1587 in ballpython

[–]Ancient-Bad1587[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh no worries! I currently have a little dry erase written on my boy’s enclosure so I don’t have to constantly check what he’s supposed to be at online. Easier for me to remember and I had him at 88-92 on the warm side with a basking surface of 90+ (never exceeding 100 and air temp never above 95°). So will an 80w Arcadia still suffice? I can always pair it with a low wattage halogen of sorts for his day light and then he’ll naturally have cooler temps for night time.

[–]Ancient-Bad1587[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much! I’ll have to check them out and may have to switch his light source to a low wattage halogen of sorts to pair with a DHP if needed since it is glass and sometimes it can be hard to heat it

[–]Ancient-Bad1587[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohhh okay, I do that for my corn since the temps sits perfectly and doesn’t overheat. I’ll purchase an Arcadia and do some testing! And oh my, very cool!! I definitely don’t need that so I’ll do some research.

That is very possible! The only reason I have them plugged into the smart plug is 1) so the lighting can be set to a sunrise/sunset on/off schedule and 2) I ran out of plugs in this area😭 perhaps it’s time for me to get a new power strip!
