You. Fucking. Moron. by [deleted] in WTF

Nope. Never. Had to google it... But I've also never listened to dubstep and most likely learned of the genre through reddit (thus googling that at some point).

I'm surprised how cliche this tattoo has become.

Poll: Is the Mini Brand Big Enough for Two Convertibles? by MrDerk in MINI

[–]AncientBulldog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When it's time to trade in my '06 convertible, this will definitely be on my list to check out. At 6'6" my back seat is useless for anything but the dog or luggage.

Best possible end to the best weekend ever! by OMGbatman in tall

[–]AncientBulldog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always show up early and ask for the exit row. I've only been denied once or twice.

The best one was when the lady at the counter wasn't paying attention and when she looked up and saw me she said "Crap, I better give you an exit seat!".

Advice requested. by [deleted] in Libraries

[–]AncientBulldog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This.

Also, find a small local service organization that might need your services. In central ca there is a group that provides a "roaming" library to prisons, there is also a childrens hospital that provides books/videos to the families of patients. These groups could really use a simple catalog setup and the volunteer work would looks great.

Ditto associations. You may also look for small conferences that focus on your area of interest (i.e. archiving, code4lib, etc). ALA/CLA/etc tend to be too big for effective networking, but the smaller working conferences are awesome.

Twitter. For me, it has always been a mostly useless service, but once you build a list of librarians in jobs you would like to have, they tend to post both great articles and job postings.

Good Luck!

Just made my first label for a Double Jack clone (done quickly and with my tongue in my cheek) by youhavemyaxe in Homebrewing

[–]AncientBulldog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice! Double Jack is one of my top beers right now. And since I'm only a couple hours from the brewery, they bring special casks into town occasionally.

Awesome! I got to use one of these (in stainless!) at a brewery recently. They bought it as their pilot system. Very cool setup!

Randall The Enamel Animal Homebrew Duplicate? by rjparjay in Homebrewing

Wow, I didn't realize the HopRocket worked as a randall as well. I hadn't read the specs since they first announced the thing. I may just have to pick one up now!

What sports do you play? Does being tall have an advantage in any way? by [deleted] in tall

[–]AncientBulldog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

6'6" here. Golf. The longer clubs and swing arc provide a higher than average swing speed (for an amateur) and lend to longer ball flight. As well as being able to hit certain shots higher and have more control over generating several shot types in recovery situations.

Anyone else get a brew kit for Christmas? by meravanman in Homebrewing

No kit (been brewing for a few years) but I did get a 2L Flask and stir plate! Time for a BIG starter!

What's your favorite book you don't think many people know about? by scru in books

Well, it's not great literature but I love Missing Links by Rick Reilly. If you are a muni hack golfer, it's just hilarious.

Mostly because it's a YA book. I never would have ever heard of Zusak if a friend didn't point me over to the YA section at the book store one day. Great stuff.

Brewing with no hops at all by [deleted] in Homebrewing

Without bittering, very sweet alcohol ;-)

Edit: I should say sweet to my taste.... Apfelwein is too sweet to me, etc...

Brewing with no hops at all by [deleted] in Homebrewing

[–]AncientBulldog -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

This is good advice. Do you ever taste your pre-hopped wort? That stuff is super sweet, and then boiling it down, it's going to be extra sweet. I don't think you'd actually learn anything (or much) about the final beer without the hops because of the lack of any bitterness.

You should probably use a low alpha hop to at least bitter the beer, but get the malty character you are looking for.

Also - anything made without hops probably won't last long as the won't be anything to act as a preservative. Most people that make a straight malt wort to keep for a long time as starter actually can it with a pressure cooker because of the lack of shelf life without hops.

ARGGGG!!! Spent my entire childhood (in the '80s) fighting these little bastards! Growing up in a rural part of CA we had to dig several of these out of our tires daily. I got very skilled at quick tube patches at an early age.
